After a moment, Richard took a sip of wine. “Cade and I have had necessary discussions.”
“About what?”
“Your public position.”
“My position?”
“Yes.”
“Interesting. I was unaware my position had been transferred to a committee.”
Cade turned slightly toward me. “Isla—”
I looked at him and he stopped.
Good.
Richard’s expression cooled. “Do not make this more difficult than it needs to be.”
“I am asking a simple question.”
“No,” Richard said. “You are asking a question you already intend to turn into an accusation.”
“Then disappoint me by answering it.”
Silence.

Richard looked at Cade again.
This time, he did not do it carefully enough.
I saw it clearly.
