It wasn’t until he got up close that he could make out the overlapping designs painted on one of the tents. He listened at the entrance for a moment before darting inside. He nearly yelped out loud when he almost tripped over the form of a child lying under a pile of furs. The young girl’s eyes flickered open. She stared up at Barlo in confusion as she muttered something in her own tongue. Her pale face was damp with sweat. A bowl of incense burned beside her, filling the air with a clean, spicy scent. She continued muttering as her eyes closed once more. Barlo’s heart hammered in his chest. He remained completely still for a few moments until the feverish girl fell back asleep.
