The Kelekele warriors were invincible because they were trained in jungle warfare from childhood, to protect their herds, pastures and women from other tribes, and to increase their herds by stealing other tribes’ livestock, women and foodstuffs. The warriors knew and did nothing else apart from fighting. They were usually well fed even during famines, well trained, disciplined and well organized. The society ensured the warriors’ proper upkeep. They were like phantom armies because they were never seen during the day. They hid deep in caves and forests from where they organized their raids. They were a real nuisance and menace to the whites because they raided during the nights when least expected. They were particularly notorious in attacking during pitch, dark nights in torrential rains
