*** Melody's Pov ***
I flew to the place where Cannon requested, fully intending to assist his brother. When I got there, sensing maybe a hundred darklings, most of which were shape shifters like myself, I kept my distance. The strongest of them all, made me recoil. It was a Blazer, but very old, strong and nothing I had ever felt before. No, I have. It's like Cannon, but with a dark aura and weak connection to the core. The demon that visited Carter.
Looking on from my safe position on the building roof, I saw four shifters working together stealing two of the young Fatums. Considering whether I should stay with Cannon's brother or save those poor children, only to see the barely matured blazer with him, blasting any animal within her sight, and the airy attacking right along with her. I chose the safer thing for myself, was to save the taken.
Sorry, Can, but my promise to Eddie didn't include dying. I'll do what I can, maybe even get back once you arrive. Though I don't see myself being of much help.
*** Third Party's Pov ***
Turning the corner to the side of the building, across from the park, Cannon got a full view of the chaos he was hearing through the phone. Seeing Addanon's back on fire, while the others were braced for another attack, broke whatever control he had. As Slade pulled up, the atmosphere became blistering cold. Cannon felt a surge of raw, untouched power, somehow connecting him to Evony. Using it, he let her know he needed help.
Before he fully exited the vehicle, he sent a geyser, fire hydrant and all, at the culprit who caused it all. Using his own reserve to douse the fire, still clinging to Addanon's back. Releasing his fury at the darkling minions, who were closing in on the rest of the group, he sent razor-sharp icicles to pierce them. Howls and squeaks were heard as his targets were hit. Making him wonder where Melody was.
The group turned their heads, noting that the Water Elemental who looked nothing less than a model advertising a new tuxedo, was the savior they'd been told about. Cannon's only wish was to check on his brother and get the hell out of there, but these people were sacrificing themselves to protect Addanon and he knew he couldn't leave them behind. With the shifters attempting to evade his attack and the hope that the turned coat was somehow incapacitated from his attack, he yelled at the group to head to the car. Just as the words left his mouth, a ball of fire went hurdling towards the vehicle, sending it at least ten feet in the air. Only for it to explode when it crashed to the ground.
Cannon's heart felt it was being twisted, believing Slade was still inside. With no time to mourn, as the fire handler was building up to attack him, he ran towards the group building an ice dome to shield them. Connecting to the water all around him, Cannon kept using it to reinforce and thicken their icy shelter.
Red turned to Cannon and said, "So not trying to sound ungrateful or anything, but are you the only calvary? 'Cause that guy seems determined to melt this." She looked back at the spot, where fire seemed to be nearing them, only for Cannon to solidify it again.
"He isn't an Elemental anymore. Another Flame has emerged. He has to run out of juice sometime, " Cannon replied, secretly praying Evony somehow heard his silent plea and there was a way to get to them, faster than the twenty-four hours it took him and Addanon. Of course, most of the time was spent taking detours to throw off anyone that could have been tailing or keeping watch on him.
"Meaning you won't run out, right?" Jazz quivered, from fear or the cold, even he wasn't sure.
"Um...., yeah..." Cannon answered distractedly. He kept focusing on any weakened spot, while checking to make sure Addanon was still breathing, only now seeing that he was hunched over someone.
Creed, was completely passed out and Cannon wasn't sure if he was hurt either. Looking at the fabric melded into Addy's skin, made him tear up.
"Aaaahhhh!!!," Bubbles cried, breaking Can out of his saddened haze, honing in on the part of the structure that almost melted.
"Sorry. Whose the kid?" Cannon asked.
"He lives with us," was all Red provided.
"Who's he to Addanon?" Cannon clarified.
"Who?" yelped Jazz, as he saw the ice reform right near his head. "You mean Dan?" he asked when he saw the Elemental staring at the person they all thought to be an underdeveloped halfling.
"Guess so," Cannon answered, already realizing these people had no idea who was in their presence. Who they cared for almost the last twenty-four hours. "We're Elementals. The Queen's guardians. He is earth, but hasn't mastered his connection yet," he explained, while mending another, almost hole. Where the hell was Melody?
"Okay, Queen's security. So is this so-called queen coming to help us out or are we going to just freeze to death in your ice house?" Red sarcastically remarked, while shivering.
"Oh you're a blazer, sh!t sorry. Look, I uh, asked someone to come help, even before I got here, but she's a shifter..." I trailed off, realizing they didn't have time to focus on whether Melody was a darkling or not.
" Great, Red over here, could've fried our only hope!" Jazz shouted.
"Don't worry, I'll think of something. Why isn't this guy tired yet?," Cannon asked more to himself, as he covered another melted area.
Shivering, Red answered snarkily, "He's ancient. The older they are, the longer they can hold on. Didn't they teach you that at fancy-name school?"
Cannon was just about fed-up with her attitude during this life-threatening situation, when they heard a booming noise from outside.
As the portal opened, Fero came through first. He focused his powers towards the perpetrator, twisting the rage that was fueling the Dark Blazer's action, finding the pain and self-doubt. Fero used that, causing the demented being to not only stop his attack on the frozen cover, but grasp at his own chest and head, not understanding where the turmoil came from.
Brennon and Devion weren't far behind. Dev immediately made his way to the dome, to create a mobile shield and get any wounded and bystanders to safety. Brennon's wish came through. He unleashed his pain, helplessness and built up trauma on the unsuspecting giant. Screaming, "Die!!!" as lava pored from one hand, while the other created a flaming wall, effectively cutting off any access to the minions, who were attempting to attack him from behind.
Devion, knocked on the icy fortress, yelling for Cannon to open up. It wasn't defrosting as he'd hoped.
During this time, Cannon felt a shiver go down his spine, as though Evony was right there caressing his face, as she enjoyed doing to them all. "It's okay my Lake, your brothers are here. Let down your guard," he heard in his mind. He wasn't sure if it was only his greatest wish turned into a figment of his imagination or real, but he decided to trust Fate and let go.
Devion breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the ice melt away, revealing his brothers and three, no four others.
"Can!" he shouted and grabbed hold of the tired looking Elemental, hugging him, just to remind himself that they were alive. He had been so worried as they waited for the portal to be completed. Hearing that Addanon was already down for the count, he feared the worst. As much as they couldn't exactly die, according to Evony, their physical forms needed time to regenerate, like the almost week Cannon was in a coma for.
"I need to breathe Dev," Cannon stated calmly. Once released, he said, "Formalities later. We need to get out of here. That man Bren is trying to bury is the one in charge of keeping my family in line. Fate alone knows how many he brought with him. The only saving grace we get out of here. Any ideas?"
"Same way we came in," Dev answered, pointing to the portal.
"I..I d..d..d...on't seeeee anything," a trembling Red, spoke.
Dev looked at her slightly confused at first, then Fero came up from behind barking orders, "Surround them in your bubble and send them on through. You did good Ken doll, let's get out of here, before Sparky burns the whole place down."
Devion knew better than to hesitate once Fero ordered, so he did as told. The remainder of the Odd Pod was sent flying through the portal while they kicked, screamed and threatened, not understanding what exactly was happening. The injured earth Elemental went next, still curled around the younger boy. Devion ached to at least touch his brother before he sent him on through, but knew that Cannon went to join Bren, attempting to cool the surrounding lava, in hopes to trap the demon, he had to do his part.
Two darklings somehow got around the fiery barrier and, both in their humanoid forms, grabbed hold of Cannon and the other, Bren, breaking their concentration, allowing the beast to break free from the igneous rock that was beginning to form. Bren immediately turned his physical form to natural, making the darkling back away, shrieking from the burns.
Cannon was thoroughly impressed and attempted the same. Believing he was the liquid in hopes of getting himself out of the hold, but before he could grasp on to his core, Devion, transparent to him, yanked the traitor off him and blew it away. Turning around, he saw Bren about to chase after the escapee, shouting, "Bren, don't please. It might be a trap. We'll get him later. Come on, let's go!"
"He stole my life from meee!!!" Bren screamed, taking his human form again. Kneeling on the ground, angry that his chance at revenge slipped away from him.
"You'll get him, K-Pop. I promise. Right now your queen is worried for you. Let's go back," Fero encouraged. He could feel the Elementals' emotions just fine, but couldn't manipulate them. As much as he wished he could for the new Flame. All the turmoil that haunted the boy, made Fero wonder how Brennon would ever find peace.
Brennon got up and nodded his head stiffly, still upset about not capturing the greatest threat to their success at destroying all facilities, like the one he was in.
"Cannon," they heard a female voice shout, followed by a woman, and two young Fatums. They looked slightly drained and scratched. One had a limp, but alive well enough.
"Melody," Cannon ran towards her and hugged her, "I thought you died or were injured. I'm so happy your alright."
"Sorry, I am no match for the force that was against your brother, but I managed to save these two, for yuh'," she answered.
"Come with us, meet the queen," Cannon invited, but she shook her head.
"I need to be out here deary, I still have work to do. Hey there Fero, fancy meeting you here," Melody called out.
In return, Fero grunted, holding the Fatums hands, looked pointedly at Devion. Dev realized Fero couldn't see the portal either and used his bubbles to send them through.
Cannon was looking at the woman who barely spoke, and begrudgingly looked after him for almost three years in wonder, "You know Fero? What work?"
"It's good that you found your family again boyo', I'm happy for yuh'," Melody said cheerily, "You lot had best be on your way. When I was flying back, I heard those mortal sirens coming this way. You made a bit of a mess around here."
"Sh!t Slade!," Cannon turned around, looking for the mercenary.
"It's alright, I saw him knocked out near a tree. Handsome fella' I'll sneak him out of here and nurse him back to health," Melody offered.
"Thanks then. How are we ever going to explain this?" Cannon asked, more to himself, not believing anyone would have the answer.
A light rustle in the trees, then a fire ball thrown at an attacking darkling, from Bren, made Cannon realise they weren't safe and had to leave.
"Papa is not as bad as he seems. He is going to help us. He knows that the Blazer will kill him soon enough, after tonight. He hid me all this time. Melody, I know you don't trust him, but believe me. I need you to keep an eye on him and get word to us once you see him make his move please," he begged.
"Fine I will. You are now my superior anyway. Now go, we covert Fatum have our cleaning crews, and your queen must be anxious," Meldoy agreed.
"Nice to finally meet you," Dev said and walked towards the opening that resembled a shattering mirror.
"Ditto," Bren threw, then at Cannon, "Come on, you look about ready to drop."
He grabbed onto Cannon's left arm and supported him on the way to the portal.
