“All the houses around here are dark,” Pauly pointed out to Ben.
“Yes, the police evacuated all of them until this is over,” Ben told him. “We didn’t want anyone caught in the crossfire.”
Pauly blew out between his teeth. “Who’s paying for all that?”
“Both the city and the federal government,” Ben whispered to him as they looked through some shrubbery a block over from the main street. “They’ve been really nice about it. Some of the neighbors were really put out but most found it quite nice to have a mini vacation.”
“Listen, Ben,” Pauly told him softly. “You’re not your aunt, so no showboating. If gunfire erupts, hit the ground and keep your head down.”
“Sure.”
