Midnight Contract
The humming stopped.
Silence settled over the nursery like a heavy blanket.
Aurora stood frozen at the doorway, Damien's hand locked firmly around her wrist. Neither of them dared to breathe.
The room was empty.
The rocking horse had stopped moving.
The music box was silent.
Only the cold night wind drifted through the open window.
The little girl was gone.
Damien slowly stepped inside first, his eyes sweeping every corner of the room.
"Clear," he said quietly.
Aurora followed, unable to shake the feeling that someone was still watching them.
Her gaze drifted toward the window.
The curtains fluttered gently.
Moonlight spilled across the wooden floor.
Then she saw them.
Tiny damp footprints.
They began beneath the windowsill and disappeared onto the roof outside.
Aurora felt a chill race down her spine.
"She was here..."
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Only seconds ago."
Damien walked toward the bed.
The old leather diary still rested on the blanket where the little girl had left it.
He picked it up carefully.
Aurora hurried beside him.
"What does it say?"
Damien frowned.
The pages were blank.
Every single one.
Aurora quickly flipped through them herself.
Nothing.
No drawings.
No handwriting.
No memories.
Just empty pages.
Then...
On the very last page...
Dark ink slowly spread across the paper as though an invisible hand had begun writing.
Letter after letter appeared before their eyes.
Midnight.
The gate.
Come alone.
A second sentence slowly formed beneath it.
If you bring him... she dies.
Aurora's breath caught.
"Him?"
Damien's jaw tightened.
"They mean me."
Before Aurora could answer, the writing began fading.
The letters blurred.
Then disappeared.
Within seconds, only three words remained.
Trust no one.
Aurora stared at the page.
"It erased itself."
Damien quietly closed the diary.
"Or someone wanted us to read it only once."
---
Without warning, every light inside Blackwood Manor blazed to life.
The sudden brightness flooded every hallway.
Every chandelier.
Every staircase.
Aurora shielded her eyes.
Then a calm voice echoed through hidden speakers inside the walls.
It was unmistakable.
Daniel.
"Aurora... don't go to the gate. It isn't midnight yet. If you do, you'll trigger it."
Static crackled.
The recording cut off.
Almost immediately...
Another voice replaced it.
Damien's voice.
"Ignore him. Leave now. Before 2:17. That's the only way you'll ever get your memories back."
The speakers fell silent.
Aurora slowly turned toward Damien.
"You never said that."
"I didn't."
His expression had darkened.
"Someone's using our voices."
Aurora looked back at the speakers.
"Or someone recorded them years ago."
Neither possibility made her feel any safer.
---
"We're leaving."
Damien headed toward the stairs.
Aurora remained standing.
Something felt wrong.
Too many clues.
Too many messages.
Too many people telling her who to trust.
She looked down at the diary once more.
The final words...
Trust no one.
They were gone.
Even the paper was blank again.
As though nothing had ever been written.
---
They hurried downstairs.
The grand entrance stood wide open.
Cold air swept through the mansion.
Outside...
The black SUV had returned.
The driver stood beside it with his head lowered.
Motionless.
Waiting.
But Aurora wasn't looking at the vehicle.
She was staring at the front gate.
Someone stood there.
The little girl.
She no longer carried the diary.
Instead...
She held the silver pocket watch.
Its cover hung open.
The hands pointed to...
1:58.
The girl smiled softly.
"You came together."
Her voice was calm.
"That's different."
Damien stepped protectively in front of Aurora.
"Where are the masked men?"
The girl tilted her head.
"They're gone."
She looked around the empty driveway.
"This part is only for us."
She raised the pocket watch.
"There are nineteen minutes left."
Aurora frowned.
"Nineteen minutes until what?"
The girl's smile faded.
"Until everything changes."
She walked forward slowly, stopping just beyond Damien's reach.
"If you stay inside these gates until 2:17..."
"...you'll remember."
Aurora felt her heartbeat quicken.
"And if I leave?"
"You'll forget."
Again.
The single word echoed in Aurora's mind.
Forget...
Again.
"What happens at 2:17?" she asked.
The little girl's eyes filled with sadness.
"You keep your promise."
Aurora's voice trembled.
"What promise?"
"The one you made to me."
"When?"
"The night they tried to kill us."
Aurora's knees weakened.
"The yacht..."
The little girl nodded.
"They weren't trying to kill only you."
"They wanted both of us."
A sharp pain exploded behind Aurora's eyes.
Flashes returned.
Ocean waves.
A white dress.
Smoke.
Someone screaming her name.
Tiny hands reaching toward her.
Then...
Darkness.
The memories disappeared before she could grasp them.
"I can't remember..."
"I know."
The little girl's voice broke slightly.
"That's why they keep resetting you."
She turned the pocket watch over.
Aurora leaned closer.
Tiny words were engraved on the back.
For A.
From D.
Aurora looked up immediately.
"D?"
The girl smiled sadly.
"Daniel..."
A pause.
"Or Damien."
She looked from one to the other.
"You still don't know."
"And that's exactly how they wanted it."
---
A distant siren echoed through the night.
Growing louder.
Approaching.
The girl gently placed the watch into Aurora's trembling hand.
It was freezing cold.
"So..."
She whispered.
"Choose."
"Stay until 2:17..."
"...and remember."
"But remembering has a price."
She glanced toward Damien.
"Leave now..."
"...and you'll be safe."
"But you'll lose me again."
Aurora tightened her grip on the watch.
Every answer only created another question.
Every clue seemed to lead in two different directions.
Behind her, Damien reached for the car door.
"We're out of time."
The little girl slowly stepped backward into the shadows near the gate.
Her voice became almost impossible to hear.
"Midnight was never important."
"It was always..."
She looked directly into Aurora's eyes.
"...2:17."
The old clock tower in the distance struck once.
1:59.
Aurora stood perfectly still.
One hand held the pocket watch.
The other still clutched the blank diary.
Ahead...
Safety.
Behind...
The truth.
For the first time since this nightmare began...
No one could make the choice for her.
Time had already started making it instead.
