The chamber shook violently.
Chunks of stone crashed from the ceiling as thick clouds of dust swallowed the masked figures.
Aurora could barely see Damien through the smoke.
Someone grabbed her wrist.
For a split second, panic shot through her body.
Then she heard Daniel's voice.
"Run!"
A deafening explosion echoed behind them.
The hidden tunnel split into two passages.
Daniel shoved Aurora toward the passage on the left.
"Go!"
"What about you?" she cried.
"I'll slow them down."
Damien hesitated.
"We're not leaving you."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"You already have once."
Before either of them could respond, he slammed a heavy steel lever mounted on the wall.
A massive iron gate crashed down between them.
Aurora reached toward him.
"Daniel!"
He looked at her one last time.
"Remember the first lesson."
"The first truth..."
"...is always the bait."
The gate sealed shut.
His final words echoed through the tunnel before everything fell silent.
---
Damien pulled Aurora forward.
"We have to keep moving."
The narrow tunnel stretched endlessly beneath the city.
Old railway tracks disappeared into darkness.
Rusted lanterns hung from the walls, untouched for decades.
Yet the air felt warm.
Someone had passed through recently.
Aurora's thoughts raced.
"So many people have lied to me."
Damien didn't answer.
She stopped walking.
"No."
"Not this time."
He turned.
"What is it?"
"You promised you'd tell me the second answer."
His shoulders tensed.
For several long moments...
He remained silent.
Finally, he spoke.
"I didn't marry you because of your fortune."
Aurora stared at him.
"I married you..."
"...because you begged me to protect someone."
The words struck her like lightning.
"I did?"
Damien nodded.
"The night before the yacht incident."
Aurora searched her memories.
Nothing.
"Who did I ask you to protect?"
Damien slowly lowered his eyes.
"You never told me."
---
Silence settled between them.
The answer should have brought relief.
Instead...
It created an even greater mystery.
If Aurora had trusted Damien enough to marry him...
Why had she hidden the most important name from him?
Her fingers instinctively reached into her pocket.
The leather notebook Daniel had given her was still there.
She opened it again.
Most of the pages were filled with familiar handwriting.
Her handwriting.
But as she turned another page...
Something slipped onto the ground.
A folded sheet.
It hadn't been there before.
Aurora picked it up carefully.
Across the top were six words.
If you remember the child first...
Her breathing slowed.
She unfolded the rest.
...the promise will die forever.
She frowned.
"What promise?"
Damien gently took the page.
"The notebook has been altered."
Aurora looked closer.
Several pages had been torn out.
Not long ago.
The edges were still clean.
Someone had removed them carefully.
Someone who knew exactly which memories mattered.
---
The tunnel finally opened into an abandoned railway station.
Old ticket booths stood covered in dust.
Broken clocks remained frozen at exactly 2:17.
Aurora froze.
"That's the time..."
Damien looked at her.
"The photograph."
She nodded.
"The one that hadn't happened yet."
Every clue seemed connected.
Every answer pointed somewhere else.
As they crossed the empty platform, Aurora noticed an old advertising board hanging crookedly from the wall.
Its glass had shattered years ago.
Behind the broken glass...
A photograph had been hidden.
She pulled it free.
Five people smiled at the camera.
Damien.
Daniel.
Aurora.
The little girl.
And another man.
His face had been burned away completely.
Only the outline of his shoulders remained.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
Trust the man without a face.
Aurora looked at Damien.
"Who is he?"
Damien studied the picture.
Then he quietly said,
"That's not the question."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The real question..."
He looked into the darkness beyond the station.
"...is why every person who knew him tried to erase him."
---
Before Aurora could ask another question...
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
Attached was a single photograph.
It had been taken only seconds earlier.
Aurora's blood ran cold.
The image showed Blackwood Manor.
Flames consumed the mansion.
Smoke billowed into the night sky.
Standing calmly in front of the burning gates was the little girl.
She was no longer carrying the white teddy bear.
Instead...
She held a worn leather diary.
Aurora's heart nearly stopped.
She recognized it instantly.
It was the diary she had kept as a child.
At the bottom of the photograph was a message.
"You've been looking for your memories."
A second message arrived immediately after.
"I've been reading them."
Aurora felt the world spin.
Whoever was behind the messages didn't just know her past.
They possessed it.
And they were always...
One step ahead.
