Chapter 4

1014 Words
As the evening falls, Nathaniel returns home to find the maid has already prepared dinner, neatly arranged on the marble tabletop. "Mr. Steele, dinner is served," the maid respectfully announces. Nathaniel absentmindedly grunts in acknowledgment, tossing his suit jacket onto the nearby sofa before taking a seat. Just as he lifts his fork, his hand pauses, and he furrows his brow, glancing towards the maid. "Why hasn't she come down for dinner yet today?" In the past, Evelyn would have eagerly awaited his return, helped him hang up the jacket, and join him for the meal. The maid stammers, "Mr. Steele, the Madam hasn't returned yet..." Nathaniel's frown deepens, and he loses his appetite instantly. Ever since Evelyn left, he's been feeling restless, unable to sleep well. The image of her resolute departure weighs heavily on his mind. With a sharp scrape, Nathaniel pushes his chair back, the sound echoing on the marble floor. He notices a dress lying next to his suit jacket on the sofa and furrows his brow. Stepping over, he picks up the dress, recognizing it as the one Evelyn wore when she left. Beneath it lies a divorce agreement, and Nathaniel's expression darkens further. The words "divorce agreement" glare at him mockingly. Gripping the document tightly, he flips through the pages, a cold smirk playing on his lips. She dares to divorce him. Seeing his predatory expression, the maid hurriedly retreats to the sidelines. Nathaniel, his face clouded with anger, dials Evelyn's number. "What is it?" Evelyn's voice comes through, cold and distant, fueling Nathaniel's frustration. He grits his teeth. "What's the meaning with you?" Evelyn replies, unfazed, "Exactly what you've seen, Mr. Steele. Sign the divorce papers, and we'll be done. From now on, we'll have no ties." Nathaniel's eyelids twitch. "No ties? You make it sound too simple." Evelyn continues calmly, "Mr. Steele, I don't want anything from you—no shares in the company, no mansions or cars. Just give me thirty million." "Thirty million?" Nathaniel scoffs. "You're a billionaire, Mr. Steele. Surely, you can spare thirty million," Evelyn retorts. "And why should I give you thirty million? What outstanding contributions have you made during our marriage?" Nathaniel's tone turns icy. Evelyn's heart trembles, her previous words merely a probe, but Nathaniel's response is ice-cold. A mere three million means nothing to him. Yet, he still rejects her with such harsh words. All she wants now is to divorce before her pregnancy shows. Clutching her phone tightly, her voice hoarse, she speaks, "Mr. Steele, you decide the terms of our divorcee's property. Just sign the papers, and we're done." She no longer wishes to be entangled with this man. She'll chalk up her years of loving him as a mistake. Nathaniel listens to her indifferent yet resolute tone, his anger burning, his eyes bulging. His words are devoid of any warmth as he says, "Evelyn, is this sudden urge to divorce because your father's company needs money again? Tell me, how much do you want this time?" Evelyn's face turns pale, and she slowly closes her eyes. She never married him for money, let alone to seek anything for the Clarke family. Each of Nathaniel's words feels like a sharp blade piercing her chest, making her shiver. Her voice trembling but firm, Evelyn replies, "Mr. Steele, once we divorce, you won't have to worry about anything, nor do you need to give a penny to the Clarke family. Even if you bankrupt them, it won't concern me." Nathaniel's headache intensifies, his gaze burning with fury. After a moment, his voice emerges as if forced from his throat, "Evelyn, what gives you the right to ask for a divorce? You've lived a comfortable life for the past three years with me. Are you sure you can maintain such a lifestyle after leaving me? You won't survive without me." Evelyn's scalp tingles. She thought she wouldn't react no matter what Nathaniel said. But each sarcastic remark feels like a blunt knife cutting into her, not killing her but causing unbearable pain. She takes a deep breath, saying, "Mr. Steele, in this world, no one is indispensable. You're no exception." Nathaniel's fury reignites, "Evelyn! Are you insane? I've torn up the divorce papers. Come back, and we can forget this ever happened. You can continue being Mrs. Steele, living as comfortably as before." "No need, Mr. Steele. I don't want to be your wife anymore. Leave that position for someone else. I'll have the lawyer draft the divorce papers and send them to you again," Evelyn retorts before hanging up, refusing to give him any more chance to speak. Nathaniel, with veins bulging on his forehead, feels his anger rise. This woman dared to hang up on him? He feels she's becoming more and more unfamiliar, like a domesticated cat he's cared for three years, suddenly brandishing claws at him. Just as he hangs up, the phone rings again. Nathaniel's brows slightly relax, thinking it might be Evelyn regretting her actions. He could pretend this never happened. But when he sees Sophie's name flashing on the screen, his face darkens. He answers impatiently, "What is it?" Sophie hears Nathaniel's displeased tone and speaks cautiously, "Darling, I'm calling to let you know that the director of 'Strings of Fate' informed me that the script has been revisions." Nathaniel, irritated, rubs his temples and absentmindedly murmurs, "Hmm." Concerned, Sophie asks, "Darling, you don't sound well. Are you catching a cold?" Nathaniel adjusts his tie and replies lightly, "I'm fine." Sophie notices his unusual mood and purses her lips. "Have you had dinner?" Nathaniel sighs deeply; he's lost his appetite thanks to Evelyn's audacity. Sophie continues, "I haven't had dinner either. If you haven't eaten, why don't we dine together?" Nathaniel's voice turns cold, "No need. You can call your agent to accompany you." Taken aback, Sophie tries to please him, "If you're busy, we can plan for another time." Nathaniel responds with a distracted "Hmm" before asking, "Anything else?" Shaking her head, Sophie replies, "No, nothing." Nathaniel ends the call abruptly.
