Chapter 2

1511 Words
Evelyn waited from dusk till dawn, but she didn't see the man who said he would be back soon. She looks at the sunrise on the horizon, curling her lips in a mocking smile. The last trace of hope she had for Nathaniel is shattered. Before Nathaniel married her, he loved Sophie Thompson. But for career development, Sophie left him and went abroad to study. The Clarke family happened to encounter a crisis and needed the support of the Steele family, and Nathaniel needed a nominal wife. Nathaniel's grandfather liked Evelyn Clarke, so marrying her would benefit Nathaniel's aspirations to control the Steele family. So their marriage was finalized. Everyone thought Evelyn was after the power of the Steele family. Only she knew that when she heard she was marrying Nathaniel, she couldn't sleep for several nights out of happiness. But her love slowly turned into disappointment when Sophie appeared. Three months ago, Sophie called. Despite his grandfather's opposition and the company's troubles, Nathaniel hastily went abroad and stayed there for over half a month. She heard from the nurse that Sophie's child is over three months old, presumably conceived during that time. It's truly ironic. Nathaniel was fooling around with Sophie abroad, and when he returned, he continued his normal s*x life with Evelyn. Evelyn shivers at the thought now. She sighs heavily and gets up from the bed. There's no need to hold onto this marriage any longer! When Nathaniel returns, he looks exhausted. He pushes open the door and sees Evelyn packing her bags, his brow furrowing even more. Evelyn hears footsteps but doesn't pay attention. Nathaniel's face darkens as he sees two suitcases neatly lined up at the door. His voice turns colder, "Evelyn, what are you packing your bags for?" Evelyn is indifferent, still packing her bags. With a tense face, Nathaniel watches her pack the makeup from the vanity. He walks up to her, his voice forced from his throat, "What are you trying to do?" He adjusts his tie, visibly irritated. Evelyn clenches her fists, staring at him firmly, her tone flat, "Nathaniel, let's get a divorce." The man pauses, his face as cold as ever, "Have you thought it through?" Evelyn meets his gaze, serious, "I have. I'll have the divorce papers drafted by my lawyer and sent to you." Nathaniel watches her leave without a backward glance, his brows furrowing tightly. "If you walk out that door today, don't bother coming back," he grits his teeth. Evelyn's steps don't falter. Nathaniel clenches his jaw. "I'll freeze all your bank cards. Without my protection, do you think you can survive in Everbrook City? Come here and apologize now, and I'll pretend nothing happened." Three years of marriage, and Evelyn has been nothing but a vine clinging to him. How will she survive without him? He's offered her a way out. All she has to do is apologize, and he'll act like nothing ever happened. But Evelyn keeps walking. Nathaniel's face tightens even more, his voice sharp as he demands, "Stop." He strides to her side, towering over her, his eyes burning with fury like a wild beast eyeing its prey, wishing to tear her apart. Evelyn meets his gaze, her eyes devoid of emotion. "Mr. Steele, is there anything else?" Nathaniel's heart clenches at the lack of emotion on her face. He grits his teeth. "Evelyn, you've been my wife for three years! Earning nothing! You can forget about taking anything valuable from the Steele family." His gaze falls on her two suitcases. Evelyn feels her breath catch as Nathaniel's intentions become clear. Is he worried she's hiding something valuable in her luggage? Except for some clothes and jewelry, she has nothing else. With a thud, Evelyn pushes the two suitcases toward Nathaniel, her eyes cold as she smiles faintly. "Mr. Steele, I'm not taking anything. Are you satisfied now?" Nathaniel's throat tightens as he watches her resolute determination to leave, his mood growing even more restless, his burning gaze fixed firmly on the woman before him. Evelyn tightly bites her lip, takes off her pearl earrings, and throws them at Nathaniel. Then she meets his gaze and says, "Mr. Steele, if you think this outfit is also something you bought, and I can't take it, I'll take it off for you now." Nathaniel stares at her slightly flushed eyes, feeling increasingly irritated. "Suit yourself," he snaps before turning and heading to the bedroom. Evelyn sneers, "Mr. Steele, I'll mail this outfit to you along with the divorce papers later." With a loud bang, Nathaniel slams the door shut, putting a physical barrier between them. Evelyn looks at the house she's lived in for three years, tears she's held back for so long finally rolling down her cheeks. With clenched fists, she leaves decisively. Nathaniel rests in the bedroom for a while before walking to the living room. He looks around at the empty space, feeling a headache coming on. He irritably speaks up, "Get me a cup of coffee." The maid pours a glass of water and hands it to him. Nathaniel takes a sip, his brows furrowing as if he could crush a fly, displeased. "Why is it plain water?" The maid trembles slightly, "Mr. Steele, Madam has finished the coffee she made. Should I call her and ask her to come back?" Nathaniel places the water glass on the marble coffee table, his expression cold. "That's not necessary." The maid hesitates before speaking slowly, "Mr. Steele, Madam seemed very upset when she left today. She needs your care now more than ever, so maybe..." Before she can finish, Nathaniel interrupts her, standing up abruptly. "She'll come back when she's had enough tantrums." The maid watches Nathaniel's figure as he walks to the study, shaking her head and sighing. This time, Madam doesn't seem to be throwing a tantrum. Lena rushes over after receiving Evelyn's call. She finds Evelyn looking worn-out, as if she's been crying, and pulls her into a hug, saying anxiously, "It's okay, dear, I'm here." Evelyn manages a faint smile. After a while, as Evelyn calms down, Lena looks at her and asks, "Evelyn, are you really planning to divorce Nathaniel?" Evelyn nods. "Yes, Sophie Thompson is pregnant." "What? That wretched Sophie is really pregnant? She's probably back from abroad and wants to tie Nathaniel down with a child. Even if she doesn't force you to divorce, the child can still inherit the Steele family's estate!" "And that scum Nathaniel, when Sophie even abandoned him and ran away abroad, and now that she's just come back, he's eyeballing going to be with her, what a b***h!" "Evelyn, you can't let them have their way. Even if you're getting a divorce, you should try to get a fair share of the assets! It's best to find evidence of his infidelity!" Evelyn sighs, "The Steele family wields significant power in Everbrook City. Even if I hire the most famous lawyer, no one dares to help me." After a pause, she continues, "In these three years, Nathaniel has treated me fairly well, except for emotions, he hasn't mistreated me in terms of food, clothing, or shelter." "I don't know how much money Nathaniel has. He might be generous and give me tens of millions when he's happy, but if he's not, he might leave me with nothing. After all, my father and brother have gained a lot from him over these three years, but they've also left behind a lot of evidence." "If I really offend Nathaniel, the Clarke family might go bankrupt." She caresses her abdomen, revealing a hint of a long-lost smile. "And now I'm pregnant. I just want to stay away from Nathaniel in the future." Lena's eyes light up at Evelyn, "With this child and Nathaniel's grandfather supporting you, Sophie won't stand a chance of marrying into the Steele family. Her child can only be a bastard." Evelyn shakes her head, "Lena, you don't understand Nathaniel enough. He defied his grandfather's opposition and flew abroad. It shows how important Sophie is to him." "Now I have nothing except for the child. I just want to have the child, live a stable life, and even if Nathaniel doesn't give me money, I have the ability to support myself and the child." Lena curses angrily, "These two are ruthless. They'll get their comeuppance sooner or later!" Evelyn leans against the car door, listening to Lena's tirade. Suddenly, Lena thinks of something and looks at Evelyn, "Darling! You're a great screenwriter. In three years of marriage, how many good opportunities have you missed? Now is the time to show your strength, isn't it?" Evelyn slowly speaks, "I've taken on a few scripts recently, and now that I'm going to have a child, I really need to work harder." Lena smiles, "I know you have nowhere else to go now. My brother's house has been vacant, you can stay there, for as long as you want, if I'm not too busy, I'll come over to keep you company." Evelyn nods.
