Chapter 9: The Past (9)

687 Words
As days turned into weeks and weeks into months, Meg grew more comfortable around Alex than she had ever been with anyone before. Their conversations felt effortless now. She no longer worried about saying the wrong thing. She laughed freely, shared random thoughts without filtering them, and sometimes even admitted her insecurities. Without realizing it at first, her feelings for Alex began to deepen beyond simple affection. She found herself thinking about him throughout the day. When something funny happened, she instinctively wanted to tell him. When she felt sad, she wished he were there physically to comfort her. She would catch herself smiling while remembering something he had said. Other times, when hours passed without hearing from him, she felt a quiet ache in her chest. At first, she brushed it aside. “I’m just happy to have someone who cares,” she told herself. But the feeling refused to stay small. It grew steadily, like a flame gaining strength. During their phone and video calls, she began noticing little details—the way he tilted his head when listening, the way his laughter came suddenly and loudly, the softness in his eyes when he looked at her through the screen. She didn’t know what to do with these emotions. They felt bigger than she was prepared for. All she knew was that she felt happiest when she was talking to him, and the idea of losing him terrified her. Then the long-awaited day arrived. College admission letters were finally released. Meg’s hands trembled slightly as she opened hers. Her heart pounded loudly in her ears as her eyes scanned the page. “Congratulations, you have been admitted.” She gasped. Not only had she been admitted—but it was to the same college Alex had applied to and been accepted into earlier. “We’re going to be classmates,” she whispered in disbelief. Without hesitation, she called him. “We’re going to the same college!” she exclaimed breathlessly. Alex’s laughter filled her ears. “I know! I just got my letter too! This is amazing. We’ll be able to study together, hang out on campus… this is going to be awesome.” They made plans to meet during orientation week. As the day approached, Meg’s nerves increased. She had known Alex for months, yet meeting him in person felt like stepping into unknown territory. When she arrived on campus for orientation, her heart beat rapidly. Students moved around excitedly, dragging suitcases and greeting new friends. Then she saw him. Alex stood outside the student union building, dressed casually but neatly. He looked slightly taller than she imagined. Handsome. Real. Their eyes locked. He smiled and walked toward her with open arms. “Hey,” he said warmly, pulling her into a hug. “It’s great to finally meet you in person.” Meg felt shy, almost frozen. She didn’t hug him properly, her arms only lightly resting around him. But the brief contact sent a spark through her body—a quiet confirmation that what they had built online was real. They spent the rest of the day exploring the campus together—attending orientation sessions, walking past lecture halls, sitting under large trees while discussing their schedules. Alex talked enthusiastically about joining the debate team and volunteering at a local animal shelter. His passion impressed her. He wasn’t just dreaming; he had plans. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and gold, they stood near the campus fountain. “I’m really glad we’re doing this together,” Alex said softly. “I feel like I’ve found a true partner in you.” Meg felt her heart flutter. “I feel the same way about you, Alex,” she replied honestly. At that moment, standing side by side in a place that symbolized a new beginning, she realized their story was entering a new chapter—one no longer limited to phone calls and messages, but shared spaces, shared experiences, and shared growth. And for the first time, the future didn’t just feel hopeful. It felt real.
