Mom’s favourite holiday is the Summer Solstice, also known for being the longest day of the year—making it drag on forever for me. Mom goes all out with activities, roping both Dad and me into them when all I’d rather be doing is playing video games in my room. On cue, Mom flounces into the kitchen in a vibrant yellow dress. Her caramel hair is curled and they bounce with every step she takes toward Dad and me at the kitchen table. “Jasper, you’re not in yellow,” she scolds, staring at my dark shirt. Mom believes yellow clothing is the uniform of the holiday and insists Dad and I both wear it.
