Chapter seven: The Buried Truth
Emily couldn’t shake the feeling that she was standing at the edge of something much bigger than herself. The tension between the Caldwell brothers wasn’t just a family feud—it was a war of secrets, power, and history. The trust fund tied to the inn was clearly a piece of the puzzle, but there had to be more. Something deeper, something that made both brothers act like they were circling a treasure chest.
Determined to find answers, Emily dove into the town archives the next morning. Clara had been hesitant to give her access to the older records, but Emily’s persistence won out.
“What exactly are you looking for?” Clara asked, her curiosity piqued.
“Anything about the Caldwell family or the inn’s ownership history,” Emily replied. “There’s something going on here, Clara. Something neither Liam nor Daniel is being fully honest about.”
Clara frowned but nodded. “Alright, but be careful. Digging into the past can stir up things best left buried.”
---
Hours later, Emily sat surrounded by dusty files, her fingers smudged with ink from the old pages. The history of the Caldwell Inn was more complicated than she had imagined. It had been built by Liam’s great-grandfather, who had been a shrewd businessman but also a man known for making risky deals.
One document caught her eye—a deed transfer dated 1953. It stated that the inn had been used as collateral for a substantial loan from a now-defunct bank. That in itself wasn’t unusual, but the fine print made her stomach drop.
The inn was tied to a clause stipulating that if it ever left the Caldwell family’s ownership, the trust fund would be forfeited to a private foundation in New York.
Emily sat back, her mind racing. This wasn’t just about money or family legacy—this was about control. Liam’s insistence on keeping the inn within the family suddenly made sense. If Daniel gained control or the town council forced a sale, everything Liam was working for could unravel.
But why hadn’t he told her any of this?
That evening, Emily went straight to the Caldwell Inn. She found Liam in his makeshift office, poring over renovation plans. The sight of him, sleeves rolled up and hair slightly disheveled, momentarily softened her anger.
“Liam, we need to talk,” she said, stepping inside.
He looked up, his brow furrowing at her serious tone. “What’s wrong?”
Emily placed the deed transfer on the desk in front of him. “Why didn’t you tell me about this?”
Liam’s expression darkened as he scanned the document. “Where did you get this?”
“The town archives,” she replied. “Why are you keeping secrets, Liam? If you had told me about this clause, I could’ve helped you.”
He leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. “It’s not that simple, Emily. This clause—it’s complicated. If the inn leaves the family, the trust fund is gone. But if Daniel gets control, it could be even worse. He’s not interested in preserving the inn—he just wants to sell it off for quick cash.”
Emily’s frustration bubbled over. “So you’ve been fighting him this whole time, and you didn’t think I deserved to know why? I’ve been standing by you, defending you to the town, and you kept me in the dark.”
Liam stood, his eyes pleading. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to drag you into this mess. You’ve done so much for this town, Emily. I didn’t want my family’s problems to become yours.”
“That’s not your decision to make,” she said quietly.
Before Liam could respond, the door burst open, and Daniel stormed in, a look of triumph on his face.
“Isn’t this cozy?” Daniel drawled. “The two of you playing house while the real decisions are being made.”
“What are you talking about?” Liam asked sharply.
Daniel smirked, pulling a set of papers from his coat. “I just filed a petition with the court. If I can prove mismanagement of the family estate—which includes your little project here—I can seize control of the inn.”
Liam’s face hardened. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“Oh, I would,” Daniel said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. “And by the time I’m done, this inn will be sold to the highest bidder, and there won’t be a damn thing you can do about it.”
Emily felt the room spin. “You can’t do that. The town—”
“The town will survive,” Daniel interrupted. “But I’m done letting Liam play the martyr. It’s time for someone else to take the reins.”
As Daniel left, slamming the door behind him, Emily turned to Liam, her heart pounding.
“What are we going to do?” she asked, her voice trembling.
Liam’s eyes were steely, his jaw set. “We fight. And we win.”
The following days were a blur of legal meetings and frantic strategy sessions. Liam was determined to stop Daniel’s petition, but the odds were stacked against him. Daniel’s legal team was ruthless, and the courts seemed more interested in the potential profit from a sale than the inn’s historical value.
Emily worked tirelessly alongside Liam, researching old records and rallying community support. But even as they fought side by side, she couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that there was more to the story.
One evening, while reviewing documents at her office, she stumbled across something strange—a letter from Liam’s mother to his great-uncle, dated years before her death. The letter mentioned a secret ledger hidden somewhere in the inn, one that could prove the Caldwell family’s rightful ownership and potentially nullify the trust fund clause.
Emily’s hands trembled as she read the letter. If the ledger existed, it could change everything. But it also meant one thing: someone in the Caldwell family had been hiding the truth all along.
---
Emily rushed to the inn to show Liam the letter. When she arrived, she found him alone in the main hall, staring at a faded family portrait.
“Liam,” she called, holding up the letter. “I found something. Something that might save the inn.”
As he read the letter, his eyes widened. “If this ledger is real…”
“It could prove your case,” Emily finished.
But Liam’s expression darkened. “If Daniel finds out about this, he’ll stop at nothing to get his hands on it.”
Emily met his gaze, determination hardening her resolve. “Then we have to find it first.”
And as the two of them began their search, they couldn’t help but wonder: w8hat other secrets were buried in the walls of the Caldwell Inn?
