Chapter 1

587 Words
2 years ago... It was a pretty normal morning, a clear blue sky with just a cloud or two and a cool morning breeze. Twilight was lying in bed, not bothering to get up. Today was her 16th birthday, not that she cared though. Not since her mom died 6 years ago. It wasn't always like this. She used to look forward to her birthday, it was pretty much her favourite day of the year. She'll never forget how her mom would always fill her room with balloons before she woke up, make a birthday present scavenger hunt and plant hidden birthday cards with messages such as: On your birthday, I thought of giving you the cutest gift in the world. But then I realized that is not possible, because you yourself are the cutest gift in the world or Don't get all weird about getting older! Our age is just the number of years the world has been enjoying us! Her favourite one was: As you get older three things happen. The first is your memory goes, and I can't remember the other two. Happy birthday! Just those memories and the fact that she'll never share such moments with her mom again created a sort of, emptiness. Thus she never bothered to celebrate her birthday. Her dad, on the other, has been a hot mess ever since. He used to cry over a of a portrait of her mom. Until one day he took the portrait to the living room and made a shrine around it, he still goes there to cry. Whenever he feels as though he's failed as a father, he goes there to apologise and ask for forgiveness, while crying of course. It's just been a whole lot of crying from his side. Not exactly the silent type of crying, but the ugly type. The type that a five-year-old does when his parents refuse to buy him a new toy. So much for the big bad wolf. "Since I've got nothing better to do, Imma just do some border patrol." She thought to herself. She dragged herself out of bed and headed downstairs, not caring enough to shower or change out of her pyjamas. "Here comes the birthday girl!" She heard as she reached the bottom of the stairs. She saw that the kitchen was filled with birthday decorations and on the table there was a plate filled with 16 different flavoured cupcakes and next to it a triple chocolate cake with chocolate covered strawberries on top. "C'mon, Papa Wolf, you know how I feel about today." "I know, but I thought that that since it's your Sweet 16, you might have a change of heart." "Nice try, but I'm not gonna change my mind," She said while taking one of the cupcakes. "But I will eat the cake and cupcakes though." "Of course you will." He sighed and ruffled her hair. "By the way, where are you going looking like that?" "I'm just going to do some border patrol. I'll shower and change when I get back and in any case I'm going in wolf form so it doesn't really matter." She said while walking towards the door and stopped in front of it. "Oh and just so you know, Mama Wolf used to say that you don't need to look good to feel good." she said with a small smile before she walked out and left, but not before shifting first. Her dad noticed the genuine smile he hadn't seen in a long time, chuckled and shook his head.
