Calip’s hand gripped the edge of the mirror frame so hard the stone cracked beneath his fingers. He didn't look at the dark glass again. He turned on his heel, his eyes locked onto Cecilia's sleeping form on the crimson silk sheets.
A sudden, sharp spasm clamped down on his chest. It felt like a liquid line of ice tracing from his throat straight down into his ancient, dead heart. His breathing hitched, a low, guttural rasp escaping his lips as his veins blackened against his pale skin, visible even in the dim ember-light. The Councilman wasn't bluffing. The silver toxin was real, and it was already moving through his system.
He crossed the room in a jagged, uneven stride, dropping to one knee beside the bed. He grabbed Cecilia by the shoulder, his grip tighter than he intended. "Cecilia. Wake up."
Her eyes snapped open instantly. She was a general’s daughter; she didn't wake up confused. The moment her gaze met his, her eyes widened at the sight of the black veins spider-webbing up his neck and jaw. She sat up, the sheets pooling around her waist, her gaze darting to the fresh puncture wounds on her own throat.
"The mirror," she breathed, her voice sharp. "My father called."
"He said you were laced with a silver toxin," Calip growled, his hand pressing against his chest as another wave of freezing paralysis threatened to lock his muscles. "He said we both die by sunrise. Did you know?"
"No," Cecilia said. She didn't panic. Instead, a cold, lethal fury settled over her features. She threw the sheets aside, stepping out of the bed completely unbothered by her nudity, and rushed toward her discarded, torn dress on the floor. "He told me he was tracking my pulse to find your location. He didn't tell me he turned my blood into a bio-weapon."
She ripped open a hidden, seamless lining inside the heavy corset of her dress. Her fingers pulled out a tiny, silver vial no larger than a needle, filled with a thick, iridescent blue liquid.
"I knew he couldn't be trusted," she said, walking back to Calip and kneeling in front of him. She held up the vial. "This is a cold-blood extraction. It neutralizes silver-based paralysis, but it only works if it’s introduced directly into the bloodstream during the first stage of the infection."
Calip looked at the tiny vial, then up at her face. The black veins were creeping closer to his eyes. "There is only enough for one of us."
"It's an extraction from a pureblood, Calip," she said, her fingers gripping his jaw, forcing him to look at her. The heat between them hadn't died down; even in the face of death, the dark obsession was running hot. "If a human takes it raw, it burns the organs from the inside out. It was meant for me to use on myself if my father turned on me, but my blood is already mixed with yours."
She popped the top of the vial with her teeth.
"Drink it," she commanded, her voice dropping to a fierce, dominant whisper that made his instincts roar despite the poison. "Drink it from my mouth. If your system purifies the silver, your venom will cure me through the bond. If it doesn't, we go down together."
Calip didn't hesitate. He took the vial from her hand, poured the burning blue liquid into his own mouth, and before the raw substance could scorch his throat, he crashed his lips against hers.
The kiss was brutal, desperate, and laced with the taste of chemicals and blood. He forced the liquid deep into her throat, his hands clamping onto her waist, pinning her to the floor beneath him as the counter-poison ignited a war inside their shared bloodline.
For a terrifying ten seconds, the world went completely black. Calip felt his heart seize entirely, a violent shudder wracking his massive frame as the black veins on his skin flared a violent, luminous blue. Cecilia groaned against his mouth, her body arching in pure agony as the pureblood extraction tore through her human system.
Then, the pressure snapped.
The black lines receded from Calip's face like melting ice. His vision cleared, sharper and more lethal than before. The icy paralysis vanished, replaced by a roaring, amplified surge of pureblood energy. He looked down at Cecilia. Her eyes were rolled back, her breathing shallow, her skin burning hot to the touch. The toxin was leaving her, but the strain was killing her.
He didn't wait. He bent down, slicing his own wrist with a sharp claw, and pressed the bleeding gash directly against her lips. "Drink, Cecilia. Claim your inheritance."
Her instincts took over. She wrapped her hands around his wrist, drinking greedily, her eyes snapping open as the purified, amplified pureblood energy rushed into her veins. The transformation was immediate. The flush returned to her cheeks, but her eyes, normally dark brown, flashed a brilliant, permanent crimson around the edges. She wasn't just human anymore. The bond had changed her.
The heavy iron door of the sanctuary suddenly shuddered, a massive boom echoing through the stone walls.
The security runes around the room began to crack, turning from bright blue to a dead, smoky gray.
"They're here," Calip murmured, rising to his feet and pulling Cecilia up with him. He could hear them through the stone, not just trackers this time. Heavy, synchronized marching. An entire legion. Her father had brought the main force of the Southern Council.
Cecilia wiped the blood from her mouth, a dark, wicked smile stretching across her lips as she looked at her hands, feeling the new, supernatural strength vibrating in her veins.
"Good," she whispered, her voice echoing with a faint, dual resonance that proved she was no longer just a pawn. "Let's go show my father what happens when he ruins his own board."
