Chapter 4: The Vanguard's Execution.

The echo of Commander Vane’s clapping died out, replaced by the low, steady hum of the wind through the pines. Calip didn't move for a long second. He remained pressed against Cecilia, his chest rising and falling against hers, his mind instantly shifting from the haze of arousal to the cold, lethal calculus of survival. The scent of her blood was still heavy on his tongue, but the trap was sprung. The High Court was up there. They had their evidence or at least, the version of the truth they wanted to use to strip him of his land. "They're going to burn this place to the ground," Cecilia whispered. Her voice wasn't shaking, but her fingers gripped the leather of his jacket with a white-knuckled intensity. "They brought the vanguard. They brought the fire-wielders, Calip." Calip pulled back slowly, rising to his full height. He looked up at the distant balcony where the shadows of the enforcers were already moving back into the estate. A low, dangerous vibration started in his throat—not a roar, but a quiet sound of a predator that had finally been pushed past the point of diplomacy. "Let them try," Calip said. He reached down, grabbing Cecilia's wrist and pulling her to her feet in one swift motion. He didn't check to see if she was hurt from the fall. If she had the nerve to jump off a cliff to test him, she could handle a rough landing. "You said you came here to be a queen, not a corpse. Prove it. Can you run, or am I carrying you?" Cecilia wiped a smear of dirt from her cheek, her eyes flashing with that same erratic, defiant heat. "I don't need to run. But if we stay here, we're cornered. There's a tunnel system beneath the northern ridge. The Council doesn't have it mapped." "I know the tunnels," Calip muttered, his hand dropping to the small of her back, pushing her forward through the dense undergrowth. "But they aren't empty. That’s where the feral ones feed." "Then we make them feed on the enforcers," she shot back over her shoulder, her pace fast, her torn dress catching on the brambles as they moved deeper into the blackness of the ravine. The pacing of the night dissolved into a frantic sprint. Behind them, the sky above the estate began to glow with an unnatural, violent orange light. The vanguard wasn't waiting for sunrise. They were torching the perimeter, using supernatural fire to smoke Calip out of the valley. The smell of burning pine and ancient stone filled the air, choking and thick. As they reached the heavy, iron-grated entrance of the northern ridge tunnels, Calip ripped the rusted lock off with a single, brutal jerk of his arm. He shoved the heavy gate open, pulling Cecilia inside just as a fireball detonated against the trees fifty yards behind them, showering the entrance in a rain of sparks and ash. The darkness inside the tunnel hit them like a physical wall. It was freezing, the air smelling of stagnant water and old blood. Calip stopped, his hand tightening on Cecilia’s arm until she winced. The heat between them hadn't died down; if anything, the adrenaline of the hunt had made it sharper, more volatile. He pinned her back against the wet stone wall of the tunnel, his body blocking the faint light from the entrance. "We have two minutes before Vane’s trackers find the broken lock," Calip breathed, his face inches from hers. His eyes were fully crimson now, glowing in the pitch black. "You knew about the tunnels. You knew about the contagion rumor. You knew exactly what the Council was going to do tonight. Who gave you the timeline, Cecilia?" Cecilia’s breath hitched, her back pressing hard against the rock. Even in the dark, he could feel the heat radiating off her skin, her pulse jumping under his hand. She reached up, her fingers sliding behind his neck, pulling him down until their lips were almost touching. "My father," she whispered against his mouth, her tone dripping with a dark, bitter satisfaction. "He's the head of the Southern Council. He sent me here to die so he could take your land, Calip. He thinks I'm a disposable piece on his board." A massive twist. The female lead wasn't just a random tribute; she was the daughter of the primary antagonist, using Calip as her weapon of revenge against her own bloodline. Calip’s grip tightened on her waist, his thumbs digging into her skin through the torn fabric. The sheer audacity of her scheme made a dark, possessive laugh escape his lips. "You brought a war to my doorstep because you have family issues?" "I brought you an empire," Cecilia hissed, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling his head down. "If we kill him tonight, his territory falls to me. And everything that belongs to me... belongs to you." She didn't wait for him to answer. She pulled his mouth down onto hers, a hard, desperate kiss that tasted of iron, dirt, and absolute obsession. It was a declaration of war masked as a surrender. Calip met the kiss with a brutal hunger of his own, his fangs grazing her lip, sealing the dark pact in the dark of the cavern. A sudden, screeching howl echoed from the deeper recesses of the tunnel, shattering the moment. The feral vampires had smelled the fresh blood from Cecilia’s neck. At the same time, the shadows at the tunnel entrance shifted. The heavy, measured footsteps of Vane’s elite trackers were right outside. They were caught between a pack of starving, mindless monsters in the dark, and a highly trained execution squad at their backs. Calip let go of her lips, a cold, lethal grin spreading across his face as he drew a short, black-steel blade from his boot. He shifted his body, shielding Cecilia as the first pair of glowing, feral eyes emerged from the darkness ahead. "Stay close, future queen," Calip murmured, his voice deadly calm. "Let’s go collect your inheritance."
