Chapter 5: A Sovereign's Wrath.

The screeching from the depths of the tunnel grew louder, a chorus of clicking teeth and scraping claws that echoed off the wet stone walls. The feral ones were starving, driven mad by years of isolation in the dark, and the scent of Cecilia’s fresh blood was a beacon they couldn't resist. Behind them, torches flickered at the tunnel entrance. Commander Vane’s trackers had spotted the broken iron gate. "They're inside!" a voice barked from the entrance. "Spread out. Watch the shadows." Caught between a pack of mindless predators and a squad of executioners, Cecilia didn't flinch. She stepped closer to Calip's back, her breathing tight but controlled. The silver dagger was gone, but the raw, unyielding ambition in her eyes was sharper than any blade. She wanted to see what her chosen king could do. Calip didn't disappoint. He didn't run toward the light, and he didn't retreat into the dark. He simply stood his ground, his shoulders broad, the black-steel blade relaxed in his right hand. The air around him began to warp, a suffocating, heavy pressure expanding outward from his core. It was the crushing weight of a pureblood lineage—a raw power that didn't just demand submission; it forced it. The first feral vampire lunged out of the darkness, a mass of gray flesh, elongated claws, and hollow eyes. It didn't even make it halfway to Calip. With a movement so sudden it felt like a shift in the air itself, Calip stepped forward. His blade cut a clean, silent arc through the dark. The creature's head hit the stone floor before its body even registered the blow, dissolving into gray ash at his feet. "Vane!" Calip’s voice boomed down the tunnel, vibrating with a terrifying, layered resonance that made the stones overhead tremble. "You brought your dogs into my valley. You burned my land. Did you truly believe a few bedtime stories about my blood were enough to make me weak?" The trackers at the entrance froze. Through the dim torchlight, Calip could see the hesitation ripple through their ranks. They were trained to hunt regular vampires, but Calip was ancient. "Advance!" Vane’s voice roared from the rear, desperate to maintain control. "He's trapped! Fire-wielders, front rank!" Two enforcers stepped forward, their hands igniting with a violent, unnatural orange flame that hissed against the damp cave air. They raised their arms, preparing to unleash a torrent of supernatural fire down the narrow corridor to incinerate everything in its path. "Calip," Cecilia warned, her hand reaching out to grip the fabric of his shirt. "Stay," he commanded. Before the fire-wielders could release the flames, Calip unleashed his wrath. He didn't just use speed; he became a shadow. He vanished from Cecilia's side entirely, leaving only a cold draft behind. A split second later, a scream tore through the front rank of the trackers. Calip materialized directly between the two fire-wielders. His bare hand crashed into the chest of the first man, crushing the armor like paper, while his blade found the throat of the second. The flames died instantly, choked out by the brutal efficiency of his strike. Chaos erupted in the narrow tunnel. The remaining trackers panicked, swinging their silver blades blindly in the dark, but Calip was a ghost. He moved through them like a scythe through wheat, his movements quiet, efficient, and utterly devoid of mercy. He wasn't just defending himself; he was executing an invading army. Cecilia watched from the shadows, her pulse hammering an erratic, frantic rhythm against her ribs. The sight wasn't terrifying to her—it was intoxicating. The sheer dominance, the effortless control he held over life and death, made a heavy, primal ache bloom deep in her core. He was exactly the monster she needed to destroy her father. Within a minute, the tunnel fell dead silent, save for the sound of dripping water and heavy, ragged breathing. A dozen enforcers lay motionless on the stone floor. Only Commander Vane remained, backed against the shattered iron gate, his silver sword trembling in his grip as he stared at the blood-spluttered pureblood walking slowly toward him. Calip stopped a few feet away, his dark eyes locked onto Vane’s pale face. He didn't have a single scratch on him. "Tell the Southern Council head," Calip murmured, his voice dropping to a gravelly, lethal whisper, "that his tribute is staying with me. And tell him that if he wants his daughter back, he’ll have to come and take her from my throne room." Vane swallowed hard, looked at the c*****e around him, dropped his sword, and fled into the burning night without looking back. Calip turned slowly, his gaze drifting through the darkness until it found Cecilia standing by the stone wall. The adrenaline of the slaughter was still running hot through his veins, his fangs fully extended, his predatory instincts demanding a different kind of release now that the threat was gone. He walked back to her, his steps heavy and deliberate, until he pinned her against the wall once more, his bloody blade clattering to the floor. He gripped her waist with bruising force, his face burying into her neck, his hot breath brushing the skin he had claimed earlier. "They know you're alive," Calip breathed against her skin, his chest heaving. "The war has started." Cecilia wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, pulling him closer, her lips brushing his ear. "Then let's make sure we're ready for it
