The envelope with the golden seal sat in my trembling hands. Kelly and I exchanged worried glances, unsure of what to expect.
Slowly, I began to open it, revealing a letter written on fine parchment paper. As I read the first few lines, my eyes widened with surprise and anticipation.
“Kelly what have you done?” I asked excitedly.
“Yes I got us a scholarship form and worked things out, we passed the first stage of the scholarship” she replied smiling.
The scholarship would cover our tuition fees. All we have to do is to pass the entrance examination.
I was very much surprised at the good news because I least expected to hear such. I couldn't believe that I was going to get the opportunity to go back to school.
"I can't believe this babes, You mean you got a form for the two of us, That's so sweet of you Kelly, I owe you millions and billions of appreciation."
Just then, Kelly's phone rang and we paused so that she could pick up the call from the anonymous number.
"Wait, what!!!" Kelly exclaimed shockingly and I was so lost because I had no idea of what was happening.
Kelly had received the call that her grandpa had died. She was so transfixed and confused because she least expected it. She was equally teary and as her best friend, I was there to comfort her.
"Don't worry my love, everything is gonna be alright. I'm here for you and I promise you that I will not leave Kelly. Grandpa is resting peacefully already and you don't need to tear up about it my love." I comforted her.
Kelly has been there since day one even when I lacked the strength and courage to move on.
We moved back home quite because Kelly's mood was spoiled already. I made sure to escort her to her doorstep before heading back to my house.
It was night already and I didn't want Mum to be worried about my whereabouts. I got home and luckily, Mum wasn't back yet so I decided to go into the bedroom and rest. I couldn't believe that I was going back to school and living the dream that I ever desired and prayed for.
It was dawn already and I made sure to say my morning prayers, took my bath and I immediately headed towards Kelly's house to know how she was faring and the burial plans.
"Hey girl, be good and send my sympathy to them, tell your friend Kelly that I'm coming to see them later in the evening. Be good my dear and stay out of trouble." My mum said.
I had walked past the kitchen without noticing Mum was still around because I felt she was out already.
"Sure Mum, I will be good and you too, have a nice day." I replied as I heeded for the door.
*********
The burial of Kelly's grandpa was a big success as the locals were there to grace it. I was glad that Kelly had gotten over it and we could now live our normal lives again.
"I'm glad that my grandpa has been buried, may God rest his soul. Thank you for all you do for me Natasha, I don't and will never take you for granted." Kelly was always appreciative but she had been the person that had always done the greatest part for me.
"You're my best friend and sister, you don't need to thank me." We laughed over it as we chatted about a whole other thing too.
Not too long after Kelly’s cousin, Sarah came in with her boss, James, the youngest billionaire in the whole of America. He is a charming-looking guy who has attitude problems.
Sarah is James personal assistant, we knew he had come to sympathize with the family and maybe give them money. Kelly and I greeted him and went into Kelly’s room but to our surprise we heard a loud noise from the compound.
Kelly and I exchanged puzzled glances. What could possibly be going on outside? With curiosity piqued, we both rushed to the window to see what was happening.
Kelly's cousin, Sarah, rushed out to the scene, trying to mediate and calm the situation. The tension in the air was so intense, and the confrontation seemed to revolve around something important which James was trying to settle on the phone.
He ended the call and faced Sarah. We couldn't hear their words, but their gestures and expressions told a story of conflict and disagreement. James abruptly stepped away and answered another call.
Intrigued and concerned, I turned to Kelly, who was equally bewildered. The scholarship, the unexpected call about her grandpa's passing, and now this unexpected drama in her house.
In the middle of the intense conversation on the phone, James suddenly dropped his phone. It clattered loudly against the floor, the call got terminated.
I and Kelly watched in astonishment as James struggled to collect his thoughts. He slowly bent down to pick up the phone and he drove off.
