Upon staying at his grandma's mansion, James had nothing else to do. He would talk to his parents on the phone to tell them how he was and also check on his friends who were abroad.
"Grandma, can I stroll down the village? I would like to see the other places here." He went to his grandma's study and asked her if he could go around the small town.
Without a second thought, the old lady nodded. "Just be careful, you might get lost. Be back at lunchtime."
To keep himself from boredom within the mansion's walls, he embarked on a leisurely stroll in the village, his curiosity guiding him through the winding streets. His heart was open to new experiences, and he hoped to uncover more of the village's hidden gems.
As he meandered along, he crossed paths with a young man around his age. "Hey there!" the stranger greeted me with a friendly wave.
James returned the gesture, intrigued by the newcomer's warmth. "Hello!"
The young man approached, extending his hand. "I'm Robert. I've been living in this village all my life."
"James," he replied, shaking Robert's hand. "Nice to meet you."
"Likewise," Robert said. "You are the grandson of Madame Claudia, right? So, what brings you to our little corner of the world?"
"Just exploring," James explained. "I'm here for the summer, visiting my grandmother."
Robert's eyes lit up. "Ah, I see. Well, welcome to Eldenwood! If you're up for it, I can show you around."
James smiled. "I'd love that."
As they walked, Robert introduced James to various points of interest. The village square bustled with vendors preparing their stalls, the scent of freshly baked goods filling the air. The two young men continued their journey until they reached a serene riverbank.
"This is the river," Robert said, gesturing to the shimmering waters. "It's a great spot to cool off, especially during the warmer days."
Without hesitation, James kicked off his shoes and waded into the water. The river's chill sent an invigorating shiver through his body. "This is amazing!"
Robert joined him, laughter echoing as they splashed water at each other. "Glad you're enjoying it!"
Over the next hours, they swam and talked, the village's scenic beauty serving as the backdrop for their budding friendship. As the sun began its descent, Robert suggested, "You know, I have a group of friends who gather every day to help out with different tasks. Would you be interested in joining us tomorrow?"
James's eyes lit up with genuine interest. "Absolutely! I'd love to help out."
On the other hand, while Lila was in her stall, she found herself amidst the chatter of her friends, the morning sun casting a gentle glow on their faces. Amidst the laughter and friendly banter, a topic arose that sent a subtle tremor through Lila's heart.
"I heard there's a new guy in the village," Amy mentioned, her eyes twinkling.
Lila's heart skipped a beat, though she masked her emotions with a casual smile.
"Yeah, I also heard he was here in the market the other day. I heard he played guitar so well." Her friend Cindy added.
Trying to find the right words to say, Lila mentioned, "He seems to be interested in knowing the simple life we have here in the village." She said that with a small smile.
Amy's gaze lingered for a moment before she shrugged. "Well, let's see if he can keep up with village life."
The conversation shifted, and Lila listened to her friends speculate about the new arrival. Among their playful comments, Amy's mention of the newcomer's name brought a subtle ache to Lila's heart now that it seemed like many other girls found interest in James.
The next morning, Lila arrived at the mansion once again with an order for her mouthwatering delicacies. The maids received the trays, and just as she turned to leave, she found James walking toward her.
"Hey, Lila," James greeted, a genuine smile on his face.
Her heart fluttered at the sight of him, her voice steady as she replied, "Hey, James."
Walking together, they stepped away from the mansion, the morning sun casting a soft glow around them. Lila's curiosity got the better of her. "So, what have you been up to during your stay here?"
James fell into step beside her, his eyes bright as he recounted his recent adventures. "I've been hanging out with some new friends. Yesterday, we went to the river and spent the day swimming. It was refreshing."
Lila couldn't help but smile, intrigued by the thought of James enjoying the village's simple pleasures. "Sounds like you're making the most of your time here."
"I am," James confirmed. "Have you been to those places too?"
Lila nodded, her gaze drifting to the horizon. "Yes, I know the river. Sometimes, I go there to wash clothes."
James's curiosity was piqued. "You do? Maybe we'll run into each other again."
The prospect of seeing James at the river warmed Lila's heart. They continued to converse, their exchanging a gentle flow of words that danced like sunlight on the water's surface.
As they approached the village, a familiar voice called out, "Hey, James!"
Turning, they found Robert approaching with a friendly grin. "You have a visitor," Robert said, nodding at Lila.
James chuckled, his eyes meeting Lila's with warmth. "Lila, this is Robert. Robert, this is Lila."
Lila greeted Robert with a friendly smile, her gaze meeting James's for a moment before she turned to Robert. "Yeah, we already knew each other. We went to the same school when we were little."
"We were just heading to Alfred's place," Robert explained. "We're going to harvest some mangoes from his trees. You're welcome to join us, James."
James's eyes sparkled with interest. "I'd love to. Thanks for inviting me."
Lila watched as James and Robert exchanged a few more words, her heart fluttering with an indescribable feeling. As they bid their farewells, James turned back to Lila. "Well, I better get going. Maybe I'll see you around?"
Lila nodded, her smile gentle. "Sure. Have a good time!"
As they parted ways, Lila couldn't help but watch James's retreating figure, her heart awash with a mixture of emotions she dared not name.
As James and Robert ventured off towards Alfred's house, Lila's gaze lingered on the path they took. Her heart fluttered with a bittersweet blend of emotions. She had grown accustomed to their brief interactions, each encounter leaving a trace of warmth in her memory.
Lila found herself rejoining her friends, the conversation flowing naturally around her. As they chatted about the festival's preparations and the latest village news, her thoughts intermittently drifted to James. She couldn't shake the way his smile had ignited a spark in her heart.
In a lull in the conversation, Amy leaned in conspiratorially. "Have you heard about the new guy I told you yesterday?"
Lila's heart skipped a beat, though she maintained an air of casual interest. "Yeah, I've seen him around."
Amy's eyes danced with mischief. "He's pretty cute, isn't he?"
Lila's cheeks flushed, though she tried to hide her reaction. "I guess he's okay."
"So that guy is Madame Claudia's grandson and his name is James. And I heard that he came from abroad where his family lives now. Wow, I just wish I could also visit abroad one day. Who knows? Maybe with James?" Amy squealed while Cindy continued to tease her.
Her friends exchanged knowing glances and teases, their playful teasing unwittingly striking a chord within her. Thankfully, they didn't seem to suspect her true feelings.
Meanwhile, at Alfred's house, James found himself amidst a flurry of activity. Robert's friends greeted him warmly, their camaraderie evident as they worked together to harvest ripe mangoes from the trees.
"You'll get the hang of it," Robert reassured James as they carefully plucked the fruit.
James chuckled, feeling a sense of belonging among these villagers. "Thanks for inviting me, Robert. This is actually really fun."
Robert grinned. "We're always happy to have extra hands."
As the morning turned into afternoon, the group of friends took a break under the shade of the mango trees. Amidst laughter and playful banter, James found himself feeling more at ease than he had in a long time. He felt a sense of unity with these villagers, their shared experiences binding them together.
During their break, James's thoughts drifted to the previous day's encounter with Lila. The image of her warm smile and the way her eyes lit up as they conversed replayed in his mind. He cleared his throat, hoping to join in the banter.
"I saw James walking with Lila this morning," Robert began with a mischievous grin.
James blinked in surprise, his cheeks warming slightly. "Oh, uh, yeah. We were just talking."
Robert nudged him playfully. "She's a pretty one, isn't she?"
James managed a casual shrug, though his heart raced at the mere mention of Lila. "She's nice. She delivers the delicacies to my grandma's place."
Robert winked. "Just friends, huh?"
James chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah, just friends."
"Do you usually see each other? Your grandma likes her treats so much, so there's no wonder she delivers some of her treats from time to time to your mansion." Alfred asked him curiously.
"We sometimes see each other during her deliveries and whenever I visit the market square," James answered casually.
Alfred and Robert shared playful glances, "Lila is actually nice and thoughtful, our friend Mark actually had a crush on her." They all looked at Mark who was busy peeling a mango in his hand.
"Hey, that was before." Mark laughed it off. The friends continued to laugh and tease each other.
At the back of James' mind, the memory of Lila's soft smile and the way her eyes met his lingered. There was something about her that he couldn't quite define, a feeling that left a lingering impression. He dismissed it as nothing more than a friendly connection, unaware that his heart was slowly weaving threads of emotion that could shape his destiny in ways he had yet to fathom.
