*THREE MONTHS LATER*
I was as big as a whale, or at least, that’s what it felt like.
Kane had gotten down on one knee on our 3 month anniversary and proposed in front of most of the pack, to which I of course said yes. The ring was a simple white gold band with one center diamond maybe 5 millimeters large, with several smaller rubies on each side. It was nothing fancy or extravagant, but it’s exactly what I wanted.
Today, however, I was being induced because I had polyhydramnios, a condition where I had too much amniotic fluid. It was a couple weeks early, but Dr. Reid insisted that my babies would be perfectly healthy, and that the benefits outweighed the risks.
I had decided on today because of the historic event that Americans watched on TV as the attack happened, even though it was before I was born. Many innocent human lives were lost that day due to terrorism, and it’s another day to remember for the rest of our lives. September 11, 2021. I chose this day because Kane had an uncle who was a firefighter in New York that day that he never got the chance to meet because he died in the line of duty.
It was actually the evening of the tenth, but Dr. Reid assured me that the labor would take several hours. I was currently in the L&D VIP room. Nurses were hooking up an IV, drawing blood, attaching me to a machine that would monitor my contractions, and to two machines that would monitor the fetal heart rates. They started me out by inserting synthetic prostaglandins into my v****a. 15 minutes later, they inserted a balloon catheter into my cervix and slowly filled it with saline to help ripen it.
When that failed to start my labor, they administered Pitocin, slowly increasing the dose over a period of an hour. When that failed, too, they manually broke my water. Soon after, I began having contractions. It was now 1:37 A.M. and my contractions mild and irregular and I was only dilated to 1 centimeter.
Over the next three hours, my contractions began to get stronger and closer together. I was nauseous and my legs would cramp up. It was 4:12 A.M. and I was almost 6 centimeters dilated. I was advised that I would dilate approximately 1 centimeter per hour.
Sure enough, when Dr. Reid came to check me at 6:39, I was 8 cm dilated. Two hours later and I was 10 cm dilated, Baby A was in position, and Dr. Reid told me to push. My contractions were lasting over a minute now, and I was struggling to get through it.
“Push!” Dr. Reid said as my next contraction hit, and I pushed as hard as I could, bearing down as I did. After three more contractions, Dr. Reid shouted, “I can see the head!” This excited me and helped encourage me. I glanced at the clock – 8:43. When the next contraction hit, I pushed as hard as I could and felt the head slide out. Cries filled the room and my heart swelled with pure love.
“One more for this little one,” Dr. Reid encouraged on my next contraction, and soon I felt the body slide out as well. “It’s a boy! Time of birth 0845!” she called out, and I sighed when I watched Kane cut the cord. A nurse grabbed him and began cleaning him up and taking his vitals.
“Okay mama, take a breather, Baby B isn’t quite ready yet. What our future Alpha’s name?”
“First name is C-a-i-s-s-o-n, middle name is H-a-r-r-i-s-o-n, and last name is Knightlock,” I told her in between contractions. She wrote that down.
“Caisson weighs 9 pounds, 11 ounces and 22 inches long!” a nurse called out.
Dr. Reid checked me again, “Okay, Luna, it’s time to push again. You got this.”
Kane came back to my side and gave me his arm because he was pretty sure I had already broken his hand.
As the next contraction hit, I pushed and bared down. “I can see her head! Probably only need two more good pushes and she’ll be here!”
I panted as the next contraction hit, and felt her head slide out. One more, I thought to myself. The next contraction hit, and I panted, squeezing Kane’s arm as tight as I could while I pushed as best as I could.
I felt Baby B slide out and Dr. Reid exclaimed, “It’s a girl! Time of birth, 0900.” I released Kane’s arm so he could go cut the cord again before a nurse took her to clean her up and get her vitals.
“Caisson’s APGAR score is a perfect 10!” one nurse shouted and brought him over to Kane and me.
“What’s your little girl’s name?”
“First name K-i-y-a, middle name Marie, and last name Knightlock.”
“It’s time to deliver the placentas. These contractions will be much milder. Just push when you feel a contraction.” Dr. Reid coached, and when the next contraction hit, I pushed and felt something else slide out of me. “Two at once, that’s a first that I’ve seen. Good job, mama. I’m going to get you all cleaned up and we’ll get Kiya right over to you two.
“Baby Kiya weighs 8 pounds, 4.5 ounces and 21 inches long!” the other nurse called out. “And her APGAR is a perfect 10 as well!”
I was still holding Caisson, so the nurse gave Kiya to Kane.
Caisson was the spitting image of me in his face. Same eye shape and color, same nose and lip shape, same hair color, same everything. I was blonde hair with blue eyes, and Caisson was, too.
“Angel, she looks just like me,” Kane said, leaning down so I could see, and he was right. Wavy black hair, turquoise eyes, same mouth, nose, and eye shape. She even had the dimple on the left cheek, whereas Caisson had my two dimples.
“Caisson looks just like me,” I told him, and he gazed down at our son.
“We made some beautiful babies,” Kane said., kissing my forehead.
“We sure did.”
“Hey doc, when can we work on making more?” Kane asked ad I slipped my left hand out from under Caisson and smacked Kane upside the head. “Owww!” he complained.
“You deserved that,” Dr. Reid said with a smile on her face while she tried to stifle a laugh. “But, given the Luna’s nearly instant healing abilities, I’d say three weeks before any vaginal intercourse. Luna, you should be able to leave as early as lunch time. I’m going to have a lactation consultant come in and discuss breastfeeding and other options with you.”
I nodded and as soon as the doctors and nurses left the room, a woman in her mid-thirties came in.
“Alpha, Luna,” she bowed. “I’m Alyssa Reid, the lactation consultant. I’m going to go over the dos and don’ts with breastfeeding and discuss your other options if you choose not to breastfeed.”
Mrs. Reid spent about an hour going over everything from positions to breastfeed in, the do's and don’ts of breastfeeding and she went over formula options as well. By the time she’d finished I was really confident in my ability to breastfeed and had successfully completed my first breastfeeding session with both of the twins.
“Knock, knock,” came Dr. Reid voice from the doorway after Mrs. Reid had left. I was currently resting with Kane watching over the twins.
I opened my eyes and looked at her.
“After you successfully keep down a proper meal for an hour, you will be free to go. I’m preparing the discharge papers now.”
As she left, a nurse brought in a plate of food from the packhouse for me to eat. She lifted the lid off the plate and placed it on the bed table and slid it over to me. It was a hamburger with all the fixings, a side of veggies, and a bowl of fresh fruit.
“Thank you,” I said as I dug in. I finished the food in record time and not too long after, the same nurse came in and grabbed the tray and whisked it away. I closed my eyes to rest for another hour.
“Nova, Nova,” Kane said my name softly as he gently shook me awake.
“Huh?” I asked, blinking away the sleepiness and looking around the room.
“The twins passed their newborn tests and all you have to do is sign the discharge papers,” Dr. Reid said before going over my discharge instructions.
I signed the papers, and she gave me my copy and kept the one I signed.
“Kane, you need to go get the car seats,” I told him, and he jumped up and ran out of the room. He came back a few minutes later with both car seats and we strapped the twins into their respective seat. Then I got dressed into the clothes he brought with him, and we were on our way.
We walked into the packhouse with the twins in tow and took the elevator up to the fifth floor. We took them out of their car seats and laid them in their bassinets that were in our room. I pumped some milk and placed it in the fridge before laying down and letting sleep consume me. Kane curled up behind me, spooning me, and fell asleep as well.
We both awoke to two crying babies a few hours later. I got up and picked up both of them in my arms, cooing to them as I went to sit down on the bed to nurse them. They latched perfectly for the second time. After they stopped suckling, I burped them one by one before changing their diapers. I sat on the gliding rocker and rocked them until they fell back asleep.
After I placed them back into their bassinets, I got back in bed, pumped the leftover, put it in the minifridge in our room, and fell back asleep.
*THREE WEEKS LATER*
The twins were doing exceptionally well and were ahead of the curve for their milestones. They would respond to our voices and hold their head up for a few seconds at a time. Brielle and Aileya did a joint gender reveal party, Brielle was having a boy, and Aileya was having a girl.
I was currently sitting in my new office. Kane had the spare office on the third floor turned into an office for me, and he decorated it perfectly: sophisticated greys and silver with a splash of teal here and there. He had one of the omegas who was a craftsman build my desk and build built-in shelves along opposite walls. The twins were with Kane’s mom, Kylie, and Kane’s dad was doing research on something, but he wouldn’t say what, and he had learned many years ago how to block people from reading his thoughts.
I was sitting at my desk reading up on the closer packs to us when the door to my office swung open and Kaiden came rushing in.
“Nova, you have to read this,” he said, holding out an antique scripture.
I took it from him and unrolled it.
It is said that if the chosen Primordial is able to defeat Osiris, any pup born to two pureblooded Alphas will be Primordial so long as they are chosen to be by the Primordial God.
I looked up at him. “We knew this already, I’m not sure what the significance of this is.”
“Keep reading,” he urged.
If two Primordials should happen to be mates, their offspring will undoubtedly be Super Primordials and these Super Primordials can produce a Primordial pup no matter what the other parent’s lineage is. This is to ensure that Primordials can once again become common amongst others of the werewolf kind.
However, a Super Primordial will be extremely coveted because of their ability to produce Primordials with every pup they create. Super Primordials will also have many more powers that are unheard of in our kind but are common with other supernatural species, such as shimmering with vampires, or gaining wings and being able to fly like an Angel or Fairy. They could potentially teleport like witches and may gain magical powers.
I gasped and covered my mouth with my hand. My pups could be taken advantage of when they come of age simply for being what they were born as. And on top of it all, we have to worry about other abilities such as shimmering or even teleporting.
“What do we do?” I asked him.
“We have to make sure they believe in the mate bond just as strongly as Kane and you do and that they don’t sleep with the wrong wolf at the wrong time.”
I couldn’t help it; I facepalmed. I was going to have to drill celibacy into my pups until they meet their destined mates. This was going to be difficult.
“Who knows about this?”
“The Elders gave me the scripture and after reading it I came straight to you. The Elders have sworn not to tell anyone that doesn’t need to know.”
“This can’t fall in the wrong hands. I’ll tell Kane, but this needs to go back to the Elders for safe keeping.
“Tell me what?” Kane asked from the doorway.
“Come read this,” I told him, and he sat in a chair opposite of me and read the entire thing before looking at me.
“So, we need to drill the importance of the mate bond into their heads. Oh, and worry about abilities even regular Primordials don’t gain, such as shimmering or teleporting?”
I nodded and Kane sighed. “Great. And we need to make sure they don’t sleep with the wrong wolf. I don’t even want to think about my babies sleeping with anyone right now,” he shook his head. “Nova’s right, this needs to go back to the Elders and needs to be strictly need-to-know.”
Kaiden nodded and took the scroll back before leaving the room.
“How do we explain these additional powers to pack members if the start to shimmer or teleport?! Or they can use magic, whether it be light or dark, even though they aren’t witches?”
“We’ll have to address that as it happens and hopefully get them to control their abilities,” I sighed.
“Wait, if Alpha Regis’s son is Kris’s mate, they need to know this, too.”
“Why don’t we address that once we find out if they are mates or not.”
Kane nodded.
*FIVE WEEKS LATER*
Today was the twins’ two-month checkup and it also happened to be Kris’s 17th birthday. She had opted out of a party with the pack and instead wanted to take a few friends to the new amusement park that was built about 2 hours away from us and today was the grand opening.
I was bummed I wasn’t able to go because the twins’ appointment was at noon, and Kris and her friends had already left with four of the pack Deltas, but she promised me we would go together next time.
I thought it was odd that an amusement park was doing their grand opening in winter, but Kris told me it was going to be open year-round unlike most amusement parks.
Kane and I were currently getting the twins dressed for their appointments. Then we made our way to the pack hospital where Dr. Howard waited for us. A nurse weighed each baby, measured their length, and took their vitals.
Caisson had gained more than 10 pounds and now weighed 20 pounds even and was 30” long. His vitals were perfect. Kiya was now 16 pounds 8 oz and 26” long with perfect vitals as well. Both babies were gaining excellent control of their head and using their arms to push themselves up to look around during tummy time. They’ve even begun to babble and coo, especially at each other!
“Dr. Howard, you’re needed stat in the VIP room,” came a voice over the intercom.
“They’re doing excellent, I will see them back at 4 months for their vaccine boosters.”
We nodded and he rushed out of the room.
Gunther, Jax, are either of the girls in labor? I mind linked them.
No, it’s Kate. Dr. Vi is in there with her and Dr. Reid. But Brielle’s water just broke, came Gunther’s reply.
“Babe, take the twins please. It’s Kate and Brielle,” I told him, and he nodded, taking Kiya from me. I reached up and gave him a kiss before running out of the room and heading to the VIP L&D room.
I knocked on the door and Dr. Vi opened it for me.
“Kate?!” I exclaimed when I saw doctors working on little AJ trying to get him breathing.
“Nova,” she sighed in relief. “We were at home and my water broke and the contractions were so close together. Alex ran me here as fast as he could and by the time we got here, Dr. Reid said I needed to push. It all happened so fast…” her voice dropped. “But when he came out, his cord was wrapped around his neck twice and he wasn’t breathing and now…” she flailed her arms.
“Kate, I developed a new power. I want to try it on AJ, it could save his life, but I need yours and the doctor’s permission. I don’t have time to explain, but I promise I will after.”
She nodded fervently. “Anything. Anything to save him, please Dr. Reid, Dr. Howard.”
They both looked at me and nodded. I quickly walked over to baby AJ and focused all of my energy into my right hand. When a white light began to glow from my hands, I touched AJ on his neck lightly. Instantly, his cries began to fill the air, and everyone let out a sigh of relief.
“Thank you! Thank you, Nova! How did you do that? What did you do?”
“His trachea and esophagus had been crushed by the cord. I used my healing energy to repair it with one touch. It’s something I discovered after I broke Kane’s hand during my own delivery.”
“How did you know what was wrong?” Dr. Howard asked.
“I don’t know how to explain it other than that I can visually see internal injuries. Almost like x-ray vision, but not quite the same. His heart was beating, probably due to the CPR, but he wasn’t able to breathe.”
He nodded and began to do his exam on baby AJ. “APGAR score at 1 minute is 2, 5 minutes is 10. He weighs a healthy 8 pounds even and is 20” long. Time of birth 1247 on 11/11/21. Baby Alexander Louis Viotto Junior.” Dr. Howard handed a now bundled up baby AJ to Kate.
“He looks just like you, Alexander,” Kate said softly.
