The words hit James like a physical blow.
His hand tightened on the phone, his knuckles white. "What do you mean, inside the community?"
Ramirez's voice was grim. "The download originated from an IP address registered to one of the cabins in your settlement. We're working on pinpointing the exact location."
James felt his blood run cold. Someone in the community—someone he trusted—had betrayed them. They'd accessed Christopher's research, downloaded everything, and now that information was out in the world.
"I need to know who it is," James said, his voice dangerously quiet. "Now."
"We're working on it. But I need you to stay calm. If the traitor realizes we're onto them, they might destroy the evidence."
James forced himself to take a deep breath. "How long?"
"Give me a few hours. I'll call you as soon as I have something."
The line went dead.
James stood in his office, the phone still clutched in his hand, his mind racing. Someone in the community had betrayed them. Someone he'd trusted. Someone who'd been living among them, pretending to be an ally.
"James?" Harper appeared in the doorway, her face pale. "What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."
James turned to look at her. "Someone in the community accessed the evidence files. They downloaded everything about Christopher's research."
Harper's face went white. "Who?"
"We don't know yet. Ramirez is tracking the IP address."
Harper stepped closer, her voice dropping. "James, if someone has that information, they could rebuild everything Christopher built. They could start the nightmare all over again."
"I know. That's why we need to find them. Fast."
---
The next few hours were a blur of activity.
James and Harper went through the community's records, cross-referencing names and addresses, looking for anyone who might have a reason to betray them. It was painstaking work, and every minute that passed felt like an eternity.
"This is impossible," Harper said finally, throwing her hands up in frustration. "Everyone in this community has been with us for years. They've all proven their loyalty."
"Except one person," James said slowly. "Someone who hasn't been with us for years."
Harper looked at him. "Who?"
James's eyes met hers. "Maria. She only joined us recently. She was working for Marcus before she defected."
Harper shook her head. "She helped us capture Marcus. She helped us find Sarah. She's proven herself."
"Or she's been playing the long game."
Harper was silent for a long moment. Then she said, "We need to talk to her. Find out if she knows anything."
---
Maria was in her cabin, tending to her son.
She looked up when James and Harper entered, her face wary. "What's going on? You both look like something terrible has happened."
James sat down across from her. "There's been a breach. Someone in the community accessed the evidence files and downloaded everything about Christopher's research."
Maria's face went pale. "I didn't do it. I swear."
James's voice was cold. "How do I know that?"
Maria's eyes filled with tears. "Because I've spent years trying to make up for what I did. I've put my life on the line for this community. For you."
James leaned forward. "Then tell me who did it."
Maria was silent for a long moment. Then she said, "There's someone I've been suspicious of for a while. A woman named Claire. She joined the community about six months ago."
Harper's eyes widened. "Claire? She's been working in the kitchen. She seems like a nice person."
"She's also a former Institute employee. I recognized her when she arrived, but I didn't say anything. I thought maybe she'd changed, like I did."
James's jaw tightened. "Did you know she had access to the evidence files?"
Maria shook her head. "No. But she worked closely with the research teams at the Institute. She knows more about Christopher's work than almost anyone."
---
The search for Claire began immediately.
James and his team scoured the community, looking for any sign of the woman. But Claire had vanished. Her cabin was empty, her belongings gone.
"She's gone," David said, his voice grim. "She must have known we were onto her."
James felt a cold fury building in his chest. "We need to find her. Before she can use that information."
Harper stepped forward. "I might be able to track her. I've been monitoring the community's communications. If she contacted anyone, there might be a record."
"Do it," James said. "Find her."
---
The trail led to a small town on the coast.
James and Harper traveled to the location, their faces grim, their minds focused on the task ahead. Claire had been hiding in a small cottage, its windows dark, its doors locked.
"She's in there," Harper said, her voice low. "I can feel it."
James approached the door and knocked.
No answer.
He knocked again. "Claire. I know you're in there. We need to talk."
Silence.
James tried the handle. The door was unlocked.
He pushed it open and stepped inside.
---
The cottage was small, cluttered with papers and files. In the center of the room, surrounded by evidence of her betrayal, stood Claire.
She looked up when James entered, her face pale, her eyes filled with fear.
"James," she said, her voice trembling. "I can explain."
James stepped forward, his eyes cold. "You downloaded everything about Christopher's research. You accessed the evidence files. You betrayed us."
Claire shook her head. "It's not what you think. I was trying to protect the community."
"Protect us? By downloading the very information that could destroy us?"
Claire's eyes filled with tears. "Christopher had a contingency plan. A way to destroy the community from the inside. I found out about it when I was still working at the Institute. I've been trying to stop it."
James stared at her. "What contingency plan?"
Claire reached into her pocket and pulled out a small device. "This. It's a virus. Designed to infiltrate the community's systems and destroy everything. I was trying to find a way to disable it."
James looked at the device, his mind racing. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't know who to trust. I didn't know if you were involved." Claire's voice was barely a whisper. "I've been trying to protect everyone on my own."
---
James was silent for a long moment.
Then he said, "Give me the device."
Claire hesitated. Then she handed it to him.
James studied the device, his mind racing. It was a sophisticated piece of technology, designed to infiltrate computer systems and destroy data.
"Can you disable it?" he asked.
Claire nodded slowly. "I think so. But I need access to the community's mainframe."
James looked at her. "Then we go back together. And we fix this."
Claire's eyes filled with relief. "You trust me?"
"I trust that you're telling the truth." James's voice was hard. "But if you betray us again, there won't be a second chance."
---
The ride back to the community was tense.
James sat in the front seat, the device clutched in his hand, his mind churning with possibilities. Claire had been trying to protect them, but she'd gone about it the wrong way.
Harper was beside him, her hand resting on his. "Do you think she's telling the truth?"
James was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I think she believes she is. And that's enough for now."
When they arrived at the community, James led Claire to the mainframe room.
"Work fast," he said. "We don't have much time."
Claire nodded and set to work, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
---
The virus was disabled.
James stood in the mainframe room, watching Claire work, his heart pounding. The device had been neutralized, its threat eliminated.
"It's done," Claire said, her voice filled with relief. "The virus is gone. The community is safe."
James felt a weight lift from his shoulders. "Thank you."
Claire looked at him, her eyes filled with tears. "I know I don't deserve your trust. But I hope I can earn it."
James was silent for a moment. Then he said, "You can start by telling me everything you know about Christopher's contingency plans. All of them."
Claire nodded slowly. "I will. I promise."
