A Moment of Truth

734 Words
Kevin suddenly froze—his violet eyes dimmed in an instant. Wasn’t he, at that moment, deceiving her? Watching Lucy’s face, so much like Bella’s, and gradually overlaying the two in his mind—did that count as a lie? Right? What if one day she learns the truth and hates him for it? Looking at Lucy’s warm, radiant smile, Kevin’s hand trembled slightly as a deep sense of bliss filled him. He reached out and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, savoring the feeling of her warm presence pressed against him. “We should get married!” he declared suddenly. The sudden pressure of his embrace left Lucy feeling almost suffocated, and his proposal completely confused her—how could he bring up marriage so suddenly, especially when he hadn’t even answered her questions? Gently struggling free from his hold, Lucy murmured, “Let go.” “I’m not letting go!” Kevin insisted, holding her tight. He pressed his chin against the top of her soft hair. His violet eyes, shimmering like bright violets, brimmed with tenderness as he whispered, “I can never release your hand. You belong to me—so you must be my wife!” Lucy stopped struggling and let Kevin’s warmth surround her. Yet as she looked into his eyes, the brilliant light slowly faded into a dull shade. So he was avoiding the questions she’d asked… Unwittingly, her heart ached as if pricked by tiny needles. At that very moment, the CEO's office door suddenly swung open—again and again. A man in a crisp white suit, with exquisitely defined features, appeared before them. His tall silhouette was cast beautifully on the floor by the sunlight, and his eyes—shining like polished black stone—seemed to reveal a keen, shrewd light. “Shangguan, when did you get back? And you still don’t knock before coming in!” Kevin teased with a smile, his violet eyes now flickering with something unusual as the man approached. “Weren’t you busy? Even if I knocked, you wouldn’t hear me!” Shangguan Yun replied playfully. “I never thought you’d change so much! Ever since Bella died, I figured you’d lost interest in girls—but now you want to get married?” Shangguan Yun’s dark eyes then fixed on Lucy as he studied her closely. Noticing her cheeks blush ever so slightly with shyness, a small smile crept into his gaze. “Shangguan, are you here to talk about that?” Kevin asked. “If so, then let me tell you—I’m about to get married!” But Shangguan Yun didn’t answer him directly. Instead, he looked at the Lucy in Kevin’s arms—a face almost identical to Bella’s, yet he knew she wasn’t Bella. That pure, unblemished gaze set her apart from anyone else. “Shangguan, let me introduce you to my fiancée, Lucy!” Kevin announced proudly. “Lucy, this is Shangguan Yun—one of my very good friends!” Lucy looked up at Shangguan Yun, and the bright light emanating from his eyes pierced her own. How can anyone have eyes that shine so brilliantly? she wondered. “Hello!” Shangguan Yun greeted. But at the very moment, Lucy lifted her head, his eyes suddenly clouded; his dark pupils turned somber and deep. “Miss Lucy, hello!” he added. “Shangguan, how long are you planning to stay this time?” Kevin asked coolly, not missing the hint of surprise and questioning in Shangguan Yun’s expression. “Not sure—let’s see,” Shangguan Yun replied evenly. “Kevin, I have something I need to discuss with you.” Seeing the change in his expression as he glanced at her, Lucy instantly understood what he meant. Without a trace of emotion, she rose from Kevin’s embrace and said flatly, “Kevin, I’m off to check on Yan Yishan. I’ll join you for lunch later.” “Alright, go ahead.” As Lucy passed by Shangguan Yun, she caught a faint, indescribable scent of flowers—so subtle, she couldn’t pinpoint which kind. She cast him a sidelong glance and then turned away. “Now then, Shangguan—what’s this about? And Kevin, why would you even want to marry this girl? Is it just because of her looks?” Shangguan Yun asked, his dark eyes shimmering with quiet wisdom.
