Kevin slowly stood up and turned to face the starry night outside. His eyes, once vibrant violet, now held a dark, heavy gloom.
“This isn’t love,” he thought bitterly. “I’m merely channeling my love for you onto her. She’s nothing but a substitute—she will never take your place in my heart! And I won’t let her leave me!”
Outside, the night sky shimmered brilliantly. Meanwhile, a group of aristocratic young ladies and gentlemen, lounging in their fancy cars, reluctantly arrived at school. As usual, they indulged in boastful comparisons and aimless rivalries.
Yet one thing never changed: whenever Du Zixiu appeared, the girls erupted in cheers and shrieks, their starry-eyed gazes following him as he departed.
Lucy, as always, preferred to watch from the classroom window with her cool, indifferent eyes. Ever since that fateful day, her relationship with Du Zixiu had shifted slightly. They now spoke more freely, played the piano together, and shared their interests.
But today, her mood was especially sour—Kevin’s oppressive control over her left her feeling deeply uncomfortable.
That morning, she had seen Kevin as if nothing had happened; she’d assumed he had finally come to his senses and intended to let her go.
But the moment she spoke, he roared at her instead!
Now even her journey to school was accompanied by someone following her, with people picking her up and dropping her off. Under the guise of "protection," she was, in reality, being monitored.
Damn that Kevin—he’s now restricting my freedom!
As soon as Du Zixiu entered the classroom, he noticed Lucy’s angry expression and immediately walked over, sitting down beside her.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen? You seem to have arrived very early today.”
Lucy turned her head; seeing Du Zixiu, she offered him a small, knowing smile.
“You’re early too!”
“Are you heading to the music room soon?”
“Mm.”
Over time, Du Zixiu had grown accustomed to Lucy’s gentle smile. Through these days together, he’d learned that she wasn’t as hard to get along with as everyone said—she simply guarded herself behind a shell. And he believed that if he could show her his true heart, she would eventually accept him wholeheartedly.
“I don’t feel like attending class—I want to go to the music room,” she said softly.
“Then go ahead; I’ll come find you in a little while,” he replied.
Lucy left the classroom amid the low murmur of gossip and speculation. In the music room, a stately black piano glistened under the sunlight, exuding an elegant aura.
She quietly opened its lid and, with delicate fingertips, danced over the black and white keys. A melody flowed from her hands—a moving, smile-tinged tune that seemed to give life to the keys, as if they were whispering unheard emotions.
Outside, the sunlight drifted slowly like liquid gold.
For a moment, it looked as if countless bubbles of mist were dancing in the radiant beams—ethereal, pure. That fairy-tale happiness seemed to surround Lucy, mingling with the subtle fragrance that emanated from her.
Her hair danced in the breeze, with strands catching the sunlight and glowing with a soft orange hue—a breathtaking sight.
Suddenly, a familiar voice called out:
"Lucy, why are you here again? Skipping class?"
Outside the window, Yan Yishan watched, her tone a mix of reproach and concern. She saw Lucy’s reflection on the cold marble floor—so gentle, so graceful—yet the trace of joy in her eyes vanished in an instant.
Lucy looked up and saw Yan Yishan. At that moment, every suppressed grievance and unspoken regret surged within her. A fierce sense of loss overwhelmed her, and the feigned happiness on her face quickly faded.
“Yan Yishan, why are you only coming now? I’ve been waiting for you so long!”
Noticing the sudden flash of desolation in Lucy’s eyes, Yan Yishan’s heart ached.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen?” she asked hesitantly.
Looking into Lucy’s cool eyes, Yan Yishan detected a chilling emptiness—a light so cold it felt like a sharpened sword.
“Lucy, what happened? Is there a problem with you and Kevin? Or did you find out about that incident?”
Lucy spoke softly, her voice as gentle as a faint breeze, “That day… wasn’t it you who wanted to tell me about the matter between Kevin and the woman called Bella?”
Her words hit Yan Yishan like a heavy hammer, and a dangerous aura filled the air—a feeling both ominous and terrifying.
“Did you have a falling out with him?”
“Mm, Kevin is hiding something from me!” Lucy’s large, beautiful eyes shimmered with clear, gentle light. “That woman, Bella, must look so much like me—and yet, she’s supposedly dead! Still, in Kevin’s heart, there’s only her. I’m nothing more than a substitute—a mere placeholder for his longing. In his heart, I have no place at all—not even a little!”
Yan Yishan stepped forward, wrapping Lucy in a gentle embrace, patting her back in an attempt to soothe her, but Lucy’s tears flowed like an uncontainable flood.
Yet, the cruel irony was that although she knew she held no place in his heart, she still loved him—so very much!
“Lucy, forget it all!” Yan Yishan said softly, her eyes clouded with a hazy, sorrowful mist. “He isn’t the one for you. Being with him will only leave you scarred. It isn’t too late to leave now!”
“Leave?!” Lucy suddenly laughed—a laugh filled with helplessness and resignation. “He’ll never let me go! I’m already his—where else could I possibly go?”
“Never let you go? Why?”
“If I were to leave, knowing Kevin, he wouldn’t hesitate to make an example of everyone associated with me—including you!” Lucy replied with a bitter, half-sincere smile.
“I said I don’t care—no matter what threats he makes, they won’t stop me!”
But deep down, only she knew that many things still held her fast.
