Chapter 8: A Dream Worth Chasing

628 Words
A few weeks later, life had settled into a comfortable rhythm. Ethan’s father was recovering well, and work had become more manageable. One rainy evening, Emma sat curled up on Ethan’s couch with her laptop balanced on her knees. She stared at a folder labeled My Novel. “You’ve been looking at that file for ten minutes,” Ethan said with a grin. “I’m thinking.” “No.” “You’re overthinking.” Emma sighed. “I can’t do it.” “You haven’t even opened it.” “What if it’s terrible?” Ethan closed his book and moved beside her. “What if it’s wonderful?” She laughed nervously. “You really believe in me.” “I do.” “More than you believe in yourself.” He gently turned the laptop toward himself. “May I?” Emma hesitated before nodding. “I trust you.” For the next hour, Ethan read in complete silence. Emma paced the room, unable to sit still. Finally, he looked up. His eyes were shining. “You wrote this?” She nodded nervously. “It’s awful, isn’t it?” He stood and took both of her hands. “Emma…” “This is beautiful.” “You made me laugh.” “You made me cry.” “And you made me forget I was reading.” Tears filled Emma’s eyes. “You mean that?” “I wouldn’t lie to you.” ⸻ The following week, Ethan surprised her again. “I made an appointment.” “For what?” “With a literary agent.” Emma nearly dropped her coffee. “You did what?” “You’ve spent years hiding your dream.” “I think it’s time the world read your words.” She stared at him. “I’m terrified.” “I know.” “So I’ll be terrified with you.” ⸻ The meeting was held in a small publishing office downtown. Emma’s hands shook as she handed over the first three chapters. The agent smiled warmly. “I’ll be in touch.” Walking back to the car, Emma felt sick with anxiety. “What if she hates it?” Ethan slipped an arm around her shoulders. “Then we keep trying.” “What if she loves it?” “Then we celebrate.” “I like that plan.” ⸻ Three days later, Emma’s phone rang. She answered with trembling hands. “Hello?” Her eyes widened. When she ended the call, she simply stood there. Unable to speak. Ethan rushed over. “What happened?” Tears streamed down her face. “They…” “They want the full manuscript.” For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. Then Ethan lifted her off the ground and spun her around the living room. “I told you!” She laughed through happy tears. “I can’t believe this.” “I can.” “I always could.” ⸻ That evening they celebrated with dinner at the same rooftop restaurant where they’d shared their first official date. As the city lights shimmered beneath the stars, Emma reached across the table. “I wouldn’t have done this without you.” Ethan smiled softly. “You already had everything you needed.” “I just reminded you.” Emma looked at him with overwhelming gratitude. “No.” “You reminded me who I was.” Ethan stood and held out his hand. “Dance with me?” She smiled. “Always.” As soft music drifted through the warm night air, they danced beneath the stars once again. Neither of them knew exactly what the future held. But one thing was certain. The greatest chapters of their story… Had only just begun.
