Chapter 10: The One I Chose

1077 Words
Six months had passed since Ethan had asked Emma to marry him on the hill overlooking the lake. Every morning, Emma still found herself staring at the engagement ring sparkling on her finger, remembering the moment Ethan had knelt before her and promised to choose her every day for the rest of his life. It never felt less magical. One Saturday morning, Emma sat at the kitchen table with a mug of coffee while reviewing the final edits of her novel. Ethan walked in carrying a plate of pancakes shaped like hearts. She laughed. “You know those aren’t even close to being hearts.” “They’re abstract hearts.” “They’re pancakes.” “They’re pancakes made with love.” Emma smiled as he kissed her forehead. “I’ll take them.” They shared breakfast, laughing about wedding plans and debating honeymoon destinations. “I still vote Italy,” Emma said. “And I still vote anywhere you’re going.” She reached across the table. “You’re such a romantic.” “I learned from the best.” ⸻ Later that afternoon, Emma received a package from her publisher. Her hands shook as she opened it. Inside were several copies of her very first published novel. She carefully picked one up. There it was. Her name. Printed beneath the title. Tears filled her eyes. “I can’t believe it’s real.” Ethan walked over and wrapped his arms around her. “You did it.” “No…” She looked up at him. “We did it.” He smiled. “I just believed in you.” “You gave me the courage to believe in myself.” She opened the book. The dedication page read: For the man who reminded me that every dream deserves a chance—and every love story deserves to be chosen. Ethan blinked back tears. “I wasn’t expecting that.” Emma kissed him softly. “You’ve been inspiring this story since the day we met.” ⸻ The months flew by. Wedding invitations were mailed. Emma’s novel climbed local bestseller lists. Ethan’s father made a full recovery and proudly volunteered to walk Emma down the aisle after she shared that her own father had passed away years earlier. “You’ve become family,” Daniel told her. Emma hugged him tightly. “Thank you.” ⸻ Finally, the wedding day arrived. The ceremony took place in a beautiful garden surrounded by white roses and flowering trees. Rows of family and friends smiled as soft music floated through the air. Emma stood at the end of the aisle in a simple ivory gown that shimmered in the afternoon sunlight. She took a deep breath. Daniel offered his arm. “Ready?” She smiled through nervous tears. “I’ve never been more ready.” As she walked down the aisle, Ethan’s eyes filled with tears. He had seen beautiful things before. Sunrises. Mountain views. City skylines. But nothing compared to seeing Emma walking toward him. She reached him, and he gently took both of her hands. “You look incredible,” he whispered. “You don’t look so bad yourself.” They laughed quietly. ⸻ The officiant smiled warmly. “We are gathered here today to celebrate not only love, but the choice to build a life together.” Emma looked into Ethan’s eyes. Nothing else existed. Only him. When it came time for their vows, Ethan spoke first. “The day we reached for the same book, I thought it was just a coincidence.” “I know now it was the beginning of the greatest blessing of my life.” “You’ve taught me that strength isn’t facing life alone.” “It’s allowing someone to stand beside you.” “I promise to laugh with you.” “To encourage your dreams.” “To hold your hand during every storm.” “And to choose you…” “Every single day.” Emma wiped away tears before taking a deep breath. “Ethan…” “You found me when I wasn’t looking for love.” “You believed in me when I doubted myself.” “You turned ordinary moments into unforgettable memories.” “I promise to celebrate every victory beside you.” “To comfort you through every challenge.” “To never stop reaching for your hand.” “And no matter where life leads us…” “I will always choose you.” ⸻ The officiant smiled. “By the power vested in me…” “I now pronounce you husband and wife.” “You may kiss your bride.” Cheers erupted as Ethan gently cupped Emma’s face and kissed her. It wasn’t just a kiss. It was the beginning of forever. ⸻ The reception was filled with laughter, dancing, and heartfelt speeches. Daniel stood to make a toast. “When Ethan was a little boy, I used to tell him that the right person would never ask him to be someone else.” He smiled at Emma. “You’ve loved him exactly as he is.” “And he has done the same for you.” “May you spend every day reminding each other why you said yes.” Everyone raised their glasses. “To Emma and Ethan!” “To forever!” ⸻ Later that evening, the newlyweds slipped away from the celebration for a quiet walk beneath the stars. They found themselves outside the very bookstore where their journey had begun. The lights were off, but the display window still held rows of books waiting to be discovered. Emma smiled. “It all started here.” Ethan intertwined his fingers with hers. “One rainy afternoon.” “One bookstore.” “One book.” “And one incredible woman.” Emma rested her head against his shoulder. “You know…” “What?” “If I had to live my life all over again…” “I’d still reach for that same book.” Ethan smiled. “So would I.” They stood together in peaceful silence before walking hand in hand into the future they had dreamed of building together. Some love stories begin with grand adventures. Others begin with a single conversation. Theirs began with reaching for the same book. And every day after that, through laughter, tears, dreams, and promises, they made the same choice again and again. They chose each other. The End.
