Chapter five: The line in the Sand

The silent toast from Ashford across the crowded ballroom sent a wave of heat straight to my chest. He turned slightly, engaging in conversation with a city commissioner, but his gaze remained anchored on me. "Charlotte," a sharp, furious voice hissed near my ear. I didn't need to look to know it was Andrew. He grabbed my elbow, his grip far tighter than necessary, attempting to drag me toward a quiet alcove near the balcony doors. I stopped dead in my tracks, anchoring my heels into the marble floor. "Let go of me, Andrew." "What game are you playing?" he growled under his breath, his eyes darting nervously toward the nearby guests who were already glancing our way. "Where did you get this dress? Who paid for it? Do you have any idea how ridiculous you're making me look?" "You managed to do that all on your own tonight," I said, my voice steady, elevated just enough for a nearby couple in velvet formalwear to turn their heads. Andrew’s jaw clenched. "You are my wife. You do not parade around in a dress bought by another man while disrespecting Maya and me at my father's event. Take it off. We are leaving now." "She isn't going anywhere with you, Marcus." The heavy, commanding voice echoed right behind us. Andrew froze, his hand slipping off my arm as Ashford Donald stepped into the light. Ashford stood half a head taller, his presence completely dwarfing Andrew's desperate posture. "Mr. Donald," Andrew stammered, pulling himself upright, though his voice lacked any real conviction. "This is a private matter between my wife and me. I'd appreciate it if you stayed out of our family affairs." "A family affair?" Ashford raised an eyebrow, his expression deceptively relaxed, though his grey eyes were sharp as flint. "From where I stand, you abandoned your wife the moment you let your mistress humiliate her on this floor. You lost the right to command her the second you raised your hand to her earlier today." A few hushed gasps rippled through the surrounding crowd. Andrew’s face turned pale. Public embarrassment was the one thing the Whitemores feared more than financial ruin, and Ashford had just laid his sins bare in front of New York's elite. "Charlotte," Ashford said softly, turning his back on Andrew entirely and extending a hand toward me. "My driver is waiting outside. Allow me to escort you home." I looked at Andrew one last time. His eyes were wide with a mix of shock, rage, and a sudden, desperate panic. For two years, I had begged for his attention. Tonight, I felt nothing for him at all. I placed my hand in Ashford's. "I would like that very much." Without another word, Ashford led me down the grand staircase, leaving Andrew standing alone under the glare of whispering onlookers and flashing press cameras. The night air was cool against my skin as the driver opened the door to Ashford’s sleek black Maybach. Once inside, the heavy glass doors sealed away the noise of the city, leaving only the soft hum of the engine and the quiet space between us. "Thank you," I murmured, staring down at my hands folded over the silk gown. "For the dress. For saving me back there. You didn't have to do any of it." Ashford leaned back against the leather seat, casually unbuttoning the top button of his collar. "I don't do things out of charity, Charlotte." I looked up, meeting his intense gaze. "Then why? You don't know me. I'm just Andrew Whitemore's contract bride." A rare, faint smirk touched the corner of Ashford's lips. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a worn, silver fountain pen, placing it gently on the small leather armrest between us. It was a simple pen—scratched, old, and completely out of place against his tailor-made luxury. My heart stopped. I recognized that pen. I had given it to a cold, injured young man sitting on a rain-slicked bench outside my high school eight years ago, long before I ever signed a contract with the Whitemores. "I know exactly who you are, Charlotte," Ashford said, his low voice filling the quiet car. "And it's time you remembered, too."
