Episode 2: The Complication

826 Words
2.1 Gavin’s POV I run interference for Kai all week, ever since the Alpha starts acting like a lovesick fool. I know he's found his mate and is determined to keep it a secret until she turns eighteen. I don't want to risk my future Luna being targeted by other packs. But it's getting harder and harder to keep Kai's secret. The Alpha practically glows with happiness, making it difficult for me as his Beta, to stay focused. Just this morning, he almost blows our cover by interrupting my meeting with the other Betas to ask about his mate. "I can't cover for your ass anymore," I snap. "You need to make this public, or it could complicate things." "I know," he says, "but all I care about is her. I don't want to mess things up before she's stable." I roll my eyes in frustration. What is Kai talking about? He's the Alpha of the pack. Any girl would be lucky to have him as her mate. "She's different from all the other girls," he says. I don't know what to say to that. I am happy for him, but I am also upset now. He needs a friend more than a beta, but being unmated isn't helping the situation. When will the moon goddess have mercy on me? Maybe I should go on blind dates as well. Kai is determined to have her, and I'm starting to get worried. What if something happens to her? What if someone finds out about her and tries to hurt her? My thoughts are interrupted by the sound of voices. I turn to see the commotion in the meeting hall. I follow Kai into the meeting room, my senses on high alert. The meeting is held in the packhouse's large, ornate meeting room. The walls are decorated with tapestries and paintings, and the furniture is made of dark wood. The Alphas are seated around a long table, with servants standing by to attend to their needs. Alpha Marcus Black of the Back Crescent pack isn't present at the meeting because he has to attend an overseas business meeting. Kai has personally invited him, as he now knows that they will soon be related, as Anya is his mate and Alpha Marcus' daughter. The atmosphere is tense, and the Alphas are all sizing each other up. Alpha Charles is the first to speak. He is a tall, imposing man with a deep voice. He tells the other Alphas that he is there to propose an alliance. "The rogue werewolves are becoming more of a problem," he says. "We need to unite our packs if we want to stop them." Kai hesitates at first. He doesn't trust Alpha Charles, but he knows he needs to form an alliance to protect his pack. "I agree," he says finally. "We need to work together." The other Alphas agree, and they begin to discuss the details of the alliance. They talk about how they will share information and coordinate their efforts. The meeting goes on for several hours, and by the end, they have a plan in place. They are confident that they can put the rogue werewolves under control and keep their packs safe. As the meeting is ending, Alpha Charles turns to Kai. "I have a daughter," he says. "She's eighteen years old, and she's very beautiful. I would be honored if you would consider her as a mate." Kai is taken aback. He can't afford to tell everyone that Anya is his mate yet, but he knows that Alpha Charles is a powerful ally. He can't afford to offend him and put Anya in any more danger. "I'll think about it," he says. Alpha Charles smiles. "I knew you would say that," he says. "I'll send her to you soon." The meeting ends and the Alphas go their separate ways. I am relieved that the alliance has been formed, but I am also worried about Kai. I know Alpha Charles is not to be trusted, and I don't want Kai to get hurt. I will have to keep a close eye on both Alphas, just to be safe. But I know that I can't keep Kai's secret forever. I need to tell him the truth, even if it means risking our alliance with the Shadow Hunter pack. I take a deep breath and decide to tell Kai everything. I tell him about how I have been running interference for him all week and how I am worried about his mate's safety. Kai is shocked by what I tell him, but he is also grateful for my honesty. He knows I am right to be worried, and he promises to be more careful. I hope that Kai will be able to keep his promise, but I know that Alpha Charles is a dangerous man. I will have to stay vigilant and do everything I can to protect Kai and his mate.
