Chapter five

Alexander's gaze seemed to bore into her soul, making Emilia's skin prickle with unease. She tried to take a step back, but her feet felt rooted to the spot. The surrounding air seemed to vibrate with tension, as if the very atmosphere itself was charged with electricity. "I've been trying to understand something," Alexander said, his voice low and husky, like the purr of a predator. "About you, Emilia." Emilia's eyes narrowed slightly, unsure of what to make of his words. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Alexander's eyes seemed to gleam with intensity, his pupils constricting as he gazed at her. "I don't know what it is about you," he said, “but... I do know that I don't want to hurt you, even though it’s in my nature to do so. And let me tell you… I never take a second guess when it comes to my meal”. The words hung in the air like a challenge, as if Alexander himself was surprised by his admission. Emilia felt a shiver run down her spine as she met his gaze, her heart pounding in her chest. "They will come for you," Alexander continued, his voice low and menacing. "Claus won't touch you. Neither will any of the others." Emilia's breath caught in her throat as Alexander's words seemed to wrap around her like a shroud. She felt trapped, caught in the snare of his gaze. She desperately wanted to ask what he meant by “They” and why they wanted to hurt her, as she had never hurt anyone before, but she was still too scared to speak. "You're...under my protection now," Alexander said, his voice dripping with possession. The words sent a thrill through Emilia, a mix of fear and excitement that left her breathless. She didn't know what to make of Alexander's claim, or what it meant to her future. As they stood there, locked in a silent standoff, the surrounding air seemed to thicken, like a storm brewing on the horizon. Emilia felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise as if sensing the electricity building between them. Suddenly, a faint rustling sound came from the nearby bushes. Alexander's head snapped up, his eyes flashing with warning. "I'll be back, Emilia. And I'll find out what it is about you." “Wait!, what are you?”, she managed to ask, but he was already gone. The words seemed to echo through Emilia's mind long after Alexander vanished into the darkness, leaving her feeling bewildered. As the darkness swallowed Alexander whole, Emilia felt like she'd been punched in the gut. She couldn't breathe, couldn't think. All she could do was stand there, frozen in time, as the reality of Alexander's words sank in. She was under his protection now. What did that even mean? And why did she feel a twisted sense of relief at the thought? Emilia shook her head, trying to clear the cobwebs. She needed to get out of there, to get back to the safety of her room. But as she turned to leave, she felt a strange sensation, like a thread had been tied around her ankle, anchoring her to the spot. She looked down, but there was nothing there. Just a feeling. A feeling that Alexander had left a part of himself behind, a part that was still connected to her. Emilia shivered, despite the warmth of the summer evening. She didn't like this one bit. She didn't like the way Alexander made her feel, all twisted up and unsure. But as she turned to leave again, she caught a glimpse of something from the corner of her eye. A piece of paper, tucked into the branch of a nearby bush. Emilia's heart skipped a beat as she walked over to investigate. The paper was folded into a neat square, with a single sentence scrawled on it in elegant handwriting: "I'll be watching you, Emilia." Emilia's heart raced as she crumpled the paper in her hand, feeling a surge of fear mixed with a twisted sense of excitement. She didn't know what to make of Alexander's words, or what he meant by "watching" her. Was it a threat? Or a promise? As she stood there, trying to make sense of her jumbled emotions, she shivered. She didn't like this one bit. She didn't like the way Alexander made her feel, all twisted up and unsure. But as she turned to leave, she caught a glimpse of herself in the window of a nearby garden shed. Her eyes looked wide and scared, her skin pale in the fading light. And for a moment, Emilia saw herself through Alexander's eyes. She saw herself as a fragile, vulnerable thing, in need of protection. From what, she didn't know. But as she turned away from the shed, Emilia felt a strange sense of resolve. She was done being scared. Done being vulnerable. She was going to find out what Alexander wanted from her, and why he was watching her. ***** Days had passed since the incident in the garden, and Emilia's life had returned to a sense of normalcy. Her father had returned from his trip, and the house was once again filled with the sound of his laughter and the smell of Mrs Jenkins cooking. One morning, Emilia was awoken by the sound of Mrs. Jenkins' voice. "Emilia, dear, come down and have some breakfast!" Emilia got out of bed and made her way downstairs, feeling a bit groggy from sleep. As she entered the kitchen, she saw her father sitting at the table with a cup of coffee in front of him. "Good morning, sweetie," he said, smiling at her. Emilia smiled back and took a seat next to him. Mrs. Jenkins brought over a plate of pancakes and bacon, and Emilia dug in, feeling a bit more awake. As they ate, Emilia's father asked her about her dreams, and Emilia hesitated, unsure of how to describe the strange, dark images that had been filling her mind. "I've just been having some weird dreams, that's all," she said finally. Her father looked at her and asked thoughtfully. "What dreams, my child?" he said. “Uhmm, father, can I ask you something?”. Emilia asked, her voice low. Her father looked up from his breakfast, his eyes curious. “Of course sweetie, what’s on your mind?”. Emilia hesitated, unsure of how to phrase her question. “It’s about the creatures of the night, the ones people call vampires”, she said finally. " “I’ve been hearing stories of how they’re monsters, and how they’ve been killing people all over. But… I don’t know, it just doesn’t feel right. I want to know the real story behind them. Her father’s expression changed, and for a moment Emilia thought she saw a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. But then, he smiled and pushed back his chair. “Why don't we take a walk to the study, and I'll show you some things that might help you understand what's happening?”. Emilia nodded, curious, and followed her father to the study. The room was lined with books and papers, and Emilia's father led her to a shelf filled with old, leather-bound tomes. "These are some of the earliest accounts of the conflict between humans and vampires," he said, pulling down a book and opening it to a yellowed page. "As you can see, the stories are quite different from the ones you've been hearing." Emilia's eyes widened as she read the words on the page. According to the book, the vampires were not mindless monsters, but rather an ancient and noble species that had lived alongside humans for centuries. The conflict between them was not a simple matter of good vs. evil, but rather a complex web of politics and power struggles. As Emilia read on, she felt her understanding of the world shifting. She realized that nothing was as simple as it seemed and that the truth was often hidden behind layers of propaganda and misinformation. Her father watched her, a small smile on his face. "I'm glad you're taking an interest in this, Emilia," he said. "It's time you knew the truth." But as Emilia looked up at her father, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was still more to the story, that there were secrets he was keeping from her. And she was determined to uncover them. As they delved deeper into the books and papers, Emilia began to realize that the conflict between humans and vampires was far more complex than she had ever imagined. There were ancient treaties and agreements, forgotten histories, and hidden agendas. And at the center of it all was Alexander, the vampire who had been watching her. Emilia couldn't help but wonder what his role was in all of this, and what he wanted from her. As the morning wore on, Emilia's father led her deeper into the mystery, revealing secrets and lies that had been hidden for centuries. Emilia's mind reeled as she tried to take it all in, but she was determined to uncover the truth. But as she looked out the window, Emilia couldn't shake the feeling that this was far from the truth.
