Chapter Five

1275 Words
Getting home after a long shift at the bar, she slumped on the bed. She felt her sore muscles lose. Her hair a wild mess under her, she removed the hair band in her head and tied her hair into a messy bun. She looked up at the ceiling and noticed the height of the center shake. I need to call an electrician, she thought. She rolled over on the couch . Just as her eyes began to close, she felt her phone vibrate and pinged underneath her. She took it, and checked the message. She read it two times before she believed what she saw. “$40,000” she said aloud. She stood up and grinned. She took her bags and went out of her house. She wondered what store would be better to buy her work clothes from. She had to look her best tomorrow. It was her first day, she couldn't afford flopping. After picking the clothes she needed, she decided to visit the coffee shop close to her house since she knew couldn't afford the Starbucks coffee they sold close to the store. Sitting down at the booth, she picked up a fashion magazine that was placed at the table while she waited for a waiter. She flipped through the pages, the models admiring the models. She was about to flip the next page when she saw someone. Elijah. He wore a suit, his hair slicked back. It felt like he was staring right at her, his green eyes held a look she couldn't describe. On his left hand side was a lady. She wore a white dinner dress that hugged her curves perfectly. She was beautiful. They looked perfect for each other. She remembered their encounter on friday, four days ago. Why did he ask her to marry him if he had a lady? What was he trying to do? Was this a game to him? He's the CEO, why did he offer her the job, still, even after she refused? She thought. “If he thinks I'm going to accept his ridiculous proposal because he gave me the job, he has no idea what is coming for him. I could just look for another job” but she knew it was a lie, she could not look for another job. She had been job hunting for a long time but had been turned down several times. To make ends meet, she worked various jobs at coffee shops and grocery stores. The waiter came and she gave her her order. While waiting for her coffee she decided to look up his name on google. He was just 25 yet he looked older. He was just four years older than her. Not much age gap, She thought. She mentally scolded herself for the thought. They can never get involved with each other. They were just too different. Their world was way apart. And he wasn't her type. Maybe not completely. In appearance, he was everything, from his strong jaws to to his broad shoulders. She shook her head. He was too rude and egoistical. Appearances weren't everything. He had no manners and felt too indifferent about ruining people's feelings. Her phone rang after she dropped the styrofoam duo, having finish the coffee. It was the nurse at the hospital her mum was. She grabbed her purse and the bag of clothes on the floor close to her feet. “Hello!” She answered the call. “your grandma just got into another cardiac arr__” her phone fell from her hands after her small body hit something. She looked up to see Elijah already staring down at her. “Please, get out of my way. I can't do this right now” she cried. She remembered the doctor telling her how dangerous it was if her mum had another cardiac arrest after the previous one. The doctor had warned that she needed to be operated on as soon as possible. “What's wrong?” Elijah asked as he started down at the phone that laid broken on the floor. “Just let me go” she tried to step around to leave but he just held her arms “What's wrong! Where are you going?” he asked again “My m_mum…hospital…I ne_need to go, please” “I'll take you” At the hospital, Delilah watched as her mum breathed heavily, the monitor beep rhyming with her breaths. Her mum's face was so pale, and her hands that she held were so wrinkled. “ She has to undergo surgery. We are lucky we could revive her, it was a miracle” she recalled her conversation with the doctor earlier. “I don't know what to do. I don't have up to the amount. I don't even have up to $10,000. What should I do?” “Can I suggest something?” the doctor looked at her with pity in his eyes. She hated it, the look of pity. But that wasn't the issue at hand. If pity would bring her mother back to her, she would gladly accept it. “Anything. I will do anything” “Take away her life support. She's weak. She's not responding to treatment like she did before” he placed his hands on her shoulder but it did nothing to calm her down. She jumped up from the chair “ No I can't. I can't do it to her. She's strong. She can fight it. Please don't do that to her. I can't live without her. I love her too much” she felt her knees go weak. She knelt down at the doctor's feet, while she cried and begged. “Then we have to do the surgery right away” Now, she looked at her mum, tears blurring her vision. “what do I do mum?” she whispered. She stood up and gave her a kiss on the cheek. The room smelled strongly of antiseptic, drugs and disinfectants. She excused herself to take a fresh breath. Outside the room, she could see Elijah sitting on the chair . He typed on his phone with deep concentration. She wondered why he had offered to the hospital with her and then wait for her like they were some long time friends. Noticing her presence, he looked up at her then stood up. “How's she?” she didn't know how to describe the emotion he wore. Maybe he didn't wear any. Her lips quivered but she held back her tears. “I accept your offer” “What?” he asked, clearly not understanding what she meant. “I'll marry you”
