The sacred grounds hummed with power long before sunset.
Kael Varos felt it the instant he crossed the boundary stones surrounding the ceremonial grounds. A strange pressure prickled across his skin, like the charged air just before a storm breaks. Something beneath his feet seemed to move with a slow, steady pulse. The clearing carried an old power, something Kael couldn't quite explain. His wolf sensed it too, restless beneath his skin, pacing inside him as though it knew something he didn't.
All around him, members of the pack were beginning to gather. Hundreds of warriors filled the clearing, their voices low as they waited. In some of them, the first signs of the shift were already showing—their eyes taking on a faint silver glow as the urge to transform grew stronger. Soon, when the moon climbed high enough, most of them would surrender to it completely and leave their human forms behind. It was the nature of the Convergence—the Moon Goddess's presence was so strong during these rare celestial alignments that maintaining human shape required effort.
Kael required no such effort. His control was absolute.
He wore his human form like armor. His dark suit was immaculate, and somehow his ash-blond hair remained perfectly dry despite the humid evening air. Around him, the wolves stepped aside without being told. They gave him the kind of respect that had been passed down through generations, earned by a bloodline that had held power over the pack for centuries. Alphas commanded. It was not arrogance—it was law.
"Alpha." Marcus appeared beside him, Kael’s Beta moving with the easy confidence of someone who had served the pack for nearly ten years. Where Kael was all sharp edges and tightly controlled power, Marcus carried a natural warmth. His brown skin and easy kindness made him almost the opposite of Kael—a steady presence beside the Alpha’s cold authority. "The energy tonight is... intense."
Kael said nothing, letting Marcus fill the silence. His Beta was never one to speak without reason.
"I've never felt anything quite like it," Marcus continued, his dark eyes tracking the crowd with a warrior's assessment. "It's not just the Convergence itself. There's something else. Something the younger wolves are responding to."
Kael’s jaw tightened. He’d felt it too—a shift in the spiritual energy around them, subtle but enough to make his wolf stir uneasily beneath his skin. It wasn’t threatening, exactly. It was... unfamiliar. Which, for an Alpha whose territory he could sense in his sleep, was deeply uncomfortable.
"The Convergence creates anomalies," Kael said, his voice measured. "Spiritual activity intensifies. It's normal."
"Is it?" Marcus glanced at him. There was a knowing look in his eyes, the kind that came from years of knowing Kael well enough to spot when he was avoiding the truth. “Because I’ve been here for three Convergences, and I’ve never felt anything like this. Not once. The whole pack’s wolves are singing before moonrise.”
Kael’s focus immediately sharpened. Singing was not a term warriors used lightly. It meant pack telepathy activating, all the wolves in a wide radius beginning to harmonize on a frequency that only they could hear. It meant the spiritual energy was already running unusually strong, enough to blur the line between human consciousness and the wolf within.
He turned his head, slowly scanning the crowd. His gray eyes settled on what he was looking for: wolves whose eyes had already turned completely silver, their ears beginning to sharpen, their bodies trembling with the strain of holding back the transformation. But they weren't shifting. They were... waiting. All of them, simultaneously, as if responding to some call they couldn't quite hear.
"Gather the Sentinels," Kael said quietly. "I want the territory boundaries watched. If something is happening tonight beyond a normal Convergence, I want to know immediately."
Marcus nodded once and moved to obey. That was the advantage of having a Beta who didn't ask unnecessary questions. He simply understood that Kael's instincts kept the pack alive.
The sun dipped lower. The ceremonial grounds had been prepared with ancient markings, symbols honoring the Moon Goddess and the sacred bond she had created between fated mates. Candles burned at each of the four cardinal points, their flames flickering in the evening air. Once the moon rose and the Goddess's presence filled the grounds, those little flames would hardly matter.
Kael moved to the center of the clearing, taking his place where every member of the pack could see him. This was his role during the Convergence. As Alpha, he stood for the entire pack, keeping them grounded through the night when the boundary between their world and the spiritual one grew dangerously thin. His presence was supposed to keep them grounded.
But tonight, his presence felt fractured.
That was the only word for it. Usually during the Convergence, Kael felt completely whole—his human consciousness and his wolf consciousness perfectly merged, perfect control, perfect power. Tonight, something was throwing everything out of balance. There was a strange pull inside him, as though some part of him were reaching toward something—or someone—just beyond his grasp. He shoved it aside. Control was everything.
The first sliver of moon appeared above the treeline.
Immediately, the effect was visible. Warriors began to transform, humans flowing into wolves as naturally as breathing. Their excitement was impossible to miss. The Convergence was the one night they could let go completely, without having to constantly balance the human side of themselves with the wolf beneath it. The pack suddenly burst into motion. Wolves tore across the clearing, racing through the grass as howls rose into the night.
But Kael felt none of that joy.
Instead, he felt the pulling sensation intensify. His wolf was suddenly, aggressively present in his consciousness—not fighting for control, but alert. Hunting alert. Recognition alert. As if something precious had suddenly entered his awareness. Something he needed to find, no matter what. Every instinct in him urged him toward it—to find it, claim it, protect it.
“What is—” Kael began, then stopped himself.
He was an Alpha. He didn't experience confusion.
More of the moon rose above the trees, and the pull inside him grew stronger, almost impossible to ignore.
It felt as though an invisible rope had been tied around his chest, drawing him toward... somewhere. The edge of the clearing? The forest? His senses stretched outward, wolf-sharp and searching, trying to locate the source of the strange sensation.
There—a disturbance near the boundary of the ceremonial grounds. A presence entering the sacred space.
Kael’s entire body went rigid.
Every instinct in him urged him toward that presence. He needed to move closer, to acknowledge it, to understand what it was. His wolf was practically clawing its way beneath his skin, desperate to break free. It wanted to transform. It wanted to run toward whatever had just crossed the boundary.
And beneath all of that was something deeper—something so old and instinctive that he couldn't put it into words: Recognition.
His wolf knew what was coming.
Kael's human mind, however, had no idea what that meant.
He held onto the last bit of his control, forcing himself to stay still and keeping his expression as cold and unreadable as ever. Around him, the pack howled and celebrated as the moon climbed fully into the sky. The Convergence reached its peak, and the presence of the Moon Goddess seemed to sweep through the sacred grounds.
But Kael's entire awareness was focused on that presence at the boundary. On that impossible, inexplicable pull. On the question forming in his mind: What was arriving at his Convergence tonight?
