Chapter 28 Susan woke early, just as the sun peeped in through a c***k in her curtains. She stayed where she was for a few minutes, listening to the breakfast chatter from the flat below. Someone switched a transistor on, the tinny melody drifted upwards. She pulled back the covers, stepped out of bed and sang along as she put the kettle on and splashed her face with cold water. Opening the window to let the warmth in, she looked down at the garden far below with its washing line, clothes pegged and swinging in the soft breeze. Susan stayed at the window, watched a black cat amble along a wall, took in the smell of fried bacon from one of the flats below. She dipped back into her room, popped some bread under the grill, still humming the tune that she knew would be with her all day. Then
