Chapter 5 - "Secrets Between Us"

(Sienna’s POV) "This way!" Ethan yelled, pointing to a stairway heading underground. We bolted for it. At the last second, Dominic shoved me inside, shutting the heavy door behind us. The quiet hit me like a smack. My heart thumped so loud it reverberated in my ears. Dominic crushed me against the cold concrete wall, his body covering mine. "Are you okay?" he rasped, scrutinizing my face. I nodded, too breathless to talk. He cupped my cheek for a fleeting second. "Stay behind me." Then he turned, rifle up, eyes fierce. We went rapidly through the underground passageways. The air smelled like rust and ancient secrets. Every step we took reverberated like gunfire. "Where are we?" I whispered. "Old service tunnels," Dominic replied. "Nobody knows about them except me and Ethan." "And whoever’s chasing us?" He flashed me a gloomy grimace. "They'll wish they hadn’t found us." I shivered. Not from terror. From how completely I believed him. After what felt like hours, we approached a secret steel door. Dominic entered a code onto the keypad. The door snapped open. A private garage. Luxury automobiles. Weapons stored neatly on racks. My mouth dropped open. "You’re either Batman or a criminal mastermind," I gasped. Dominic genuinely laughed—a harsh, exhausted sound. "Maybe both," he responded. "Come on." He unlocked the passenger door of a beautiful black sports vehicle and helped me in. As he slid behind the wheel, I seized his hand. "Dominic," I whispered gently. He stilled. "What happens now?" I inquired, my voice trembling. He gazed at me, jaw clenched. Like he was making a life-or-death decision. Then he continued, "Now... I will take you somewhere safe." "And after that?" His eyes clouded. "After that... we burn them all down." I shuddered at the promise in his voice. But deep down, I wasn’t terrified. I was ready. The engine screamed to life, and we drove into the darkness. For a few minutes, there was simply the road, the wind, and the sound of my heart racing in sync with his. And suddenly my phone buzzed. I leaped. Dominic glanced over abruptly. "Who is it?" Hands shaking, I took it out. Unknown number again. One message. I warned you, Sienna. You choose incorrectly. Now you both die. Attached was a picture. My blood froze. It was my sister. Tied up. Gagged. Tears flowing down her cheeks. I gasped. "Dominic—!" He snatched the phone, his face turning to stone. "Where was this sent from?" he questioned. "I—I don’t know!" He cursed viciously and hit a button on the dashboard. "Trace that signal," he screamed at Ethan over the intercom. Seconds later, Ethan’s voice crackled through. "I’ve got a location. Warehouse District. Dock 17." Dominic’s eyes met mine, flashing with fury and terror. "We’re going after her," he added. "But it’s a trap!" I cried. "I know," he responded sadly. "And we’re walking straight into it." The vehicle screamed faster, chewing up the miles. The city blurred past. My heart hammered louder with every second. "Stay close to me," Dominic urged forcefully. "No matter what." "I will," I murmured. We screeched to a stop near a decaying warehouse. Dominic leaped out, pulling me with him. Gun drawn, mouth hard, he led the way inside. The air was heavy, dense with anxiety. Every step seemed like a countdown. I noticed her first. My sister chained to a chair in the center of the vacant floor. Tears filled my eyes. "Isla!" I raced toward her. "SIENNA, WAIT!" Dominic shouted. Too late. The floor underneath me gave way. I shouted as I fell into darkness and smashed onto cold steel. A cage. Above me, Victor Blackwell stepped into the light. Grinning. Clapping slowly. "Welcome to the end of the game," he murmured. I backed backward, heart thumping. Victor pulled out a remote and hit a button. The doors locked with a loud, final clang. Dominic yelled my name. He raced forward—but other guys surged from the shadows. Guns pointing at his head. He froze. Victor chuckled. "You didn’t really think you could steal her from me... did you?" Dominic’s face was murder. "Touch her," he whispered, voice deadly gentle, "and I'll tear you apart piece by piece." Victor grinned broadly. "Oh, Dominic... you're not in control anymore." And then he pressed another button. And the floor underneath Dominic split open. He sank like a stone and disappeared from sight. I shouted as the darkness devoured us both.
