The Day That Keeps On Giving

Kenna’s Point of view A few hours earlier: What the Hell was that? I knew Dia said Phoenix would like it, but man, she couldn’t have been more wrong. He just stared at me all class like I was an alien. Then, when he did have the ability to talk to me, he writes me an old-fashioned note pretending like I’m some new girl. Do I look that bad to him? I ran from class as fast as I could, my eyes stinging with unshed tears. I headed for the bathroom again. I need to undo all this mess and get back to normal. But as soon as I started to fidget with my hair, Dia walked in. “What do you think you are doing to my beautiful work of art?” She started, causing me to freeze. “I’m undoing it, Dia. He didn’t like it. He just stared at me like I’m some kind of alien.” I told her my tears were threatening to fall. “No. No, Mamacita. He wasn’t looking at you like you were an alien. Well, maybe like some sexy alien he wanted to explore a whole new world with. But girl, he liked it!” She explained. “Please, who’d like a piece of trash like that?” A voice came out of nowhere as a stall door opened. “Who are you trying to impress anyway, Carrot Top?” Sarah sneered. “Ay, Dios Mio!” Dia exclaimed. She snapped her head around so fast her dark hair nearly hit me in the face. “It’s none of your business, and my girl here is not a piece of trash, you hear me, LUN-A-TIC?” Sarah’s face shifted to crimson so fast it wasn’t even possible for us to see the change with our own eyes before she was completely red. “Listen here, you little slut! I’ll end this right here, right now, if I need to,” Sarah said, pulling her hand back with her palm open, getting ready to slap Dia. I quickly grabbed her wrist and held her firmly in place. “Sarah, I know you and I don’t get along, though I’m not sure why. But remember what the Alpha said this morning. I’d hate for you to get into more trouble than you already are,” I told her. She jerks her hand away from me. “What the hell ever Skank!” “That’s fine, do things your way. I mean you always have anyway, and that’s the reason we all know you are the ONLY person at school who carries a red leather purse. Aren’t you, Sarah?” I remarked back to her, a smug smile on my face. Her face pales as she realizes she’s already caught, and all I have to do is go to Alpha Callan and turn her in, and she’s in double the trouble she already is. She storms out the door in a hurry. “Mira! Who knew she could move that fast? Ha!” Dia barked out a loud laugh. “But seriously, Cuz. Don’t change anything about you yet. Give him a few hours to let all this soak in. He’ll come running to you. You know, I had to physically lift his chin after class. He was just staring after you all jaw dropped and mind blown.” She then holds her mouth open wide and uses her hands to imitate an explosion on either side of her head. “Ok I’ll wait. But just for today. I don’t know if I can do this tomorrow.” I agree hesitantly. “Girl, just wait til you see what I’m doing to you tonight. This is nothing!” She smiles wickedly. “In fact, meet me in the gym after your debate team stuff. I’ll prove to you that this is enough to blow his mind. Then later tonight we will send him into orbit!” She giggles as she walks out of the door. ******************* End of the school day: I don’t know what is going on. Dia is dying laughing, as is half the boys’ basketball team. Like actually laying on the ground laughing. I don’t understand why though. Phoenix got hit in the side of the head with a pass from Ryan. He’s usually much better at sports. He’s the team captain after all. But the coach sent him off, and now I’m wondering if I should go check on him. Dia finally calms down enough to speak. “Girl, don’t worry, he’s gonna be fine. He was just distracted, you could say.” She smirked at me as she continued. “He’s hooked Cuz, I’ve been here a while waiting for you and that boy can’t focus at all. He was finally getting into his groove when you walked in and BAM! He got conked in the head with the ball. Also, the entire team may have checked you out while you were climbing the bleachers. If you don’t get what you need from Phoenix, I’m pretty sure you have your pick of the team.” Horror washed over my face. I didn’t want that kind of attention. I mean, yeah, it’s nice to feel attractive every now and then. But I didn't want the attention of the entire team. “Dia, that was not the plan. I don’t want my pick of the team, I’m not even sure I want the attention of Nixy yet. What should I do?” I was panicking. “Calm down Kenna, It’s going to be okay. You’re new to the market, before you went unnoticed, because you never showed off what curves you have now. But it’s like anything else. You keep doing it, and they will get used to it and things will go back to normal” She explained. “Besides, not many of them would have the guts to touch you just because of who your dad is.” She started cackling at her joke. I just rolled my eyes. The guys on the court started running sprints and one of the coaches walked out of the gym. Maybe he’s going to see Phoenix. “So, are you saying you don’t want Phoenix’s attention then? Dia asks me. I was laying on my stomach with my sketchbook out working on my drawing I started in art today. I looked up at her as I thought over my answer. “I don’t know, Dia. I want to say we are just best friends, and that it’s pointless because someday we will each have a mate that will overrule any relationship we are in. So why risk losing my lifelong best friend over some possible crush that may end in heartbreak?” I ramble out. “I wasn't even thinking like this until yesterday. Why’d he have to mess me up like that?” I continued, thinking out loud. “Whoa, what happened yesterday? I’m missing something.” Dia cut me off. I retold the story from yesterday in the woods to Dia. As I finished she was staring at me in disbelief. “So to recap, you’re telling me that he kissed you, and in doing so you are each other’s first kiss, all because you were sad he might forget you when he met his mate?” She summarized, still seeming not to believe what happened. “Yeah, pretty much.” I answered with a nod. “And today, he bragged about your skills to the entire dining hall while standing up to Sarah?” she asked. “Yes, unfortunately.” “Then at school, as soon as he found out you were hurt, he took charge of helping you to the nurse’s office, stayed with you the entire time, and gave you his extra shirt? She lists as she leans closer to me. “Yeah, I guess.” I say, starting to feel slightly self-conscious as the questions continue. “THEN,” she emphasized the word. “He ends up walking you to your locker where he proceeded to tickle you and then stare at you like he wanted to devour your face?” She starts pointing to her fingers as if she’s counting as she lists things. “Umm. I mean, I don’t know about the devouring my face but the tickling yes.” I answered her with my brows furrowed. “And when he saw you after I fixed you up, he couldn’t take his eyes off of you? Even pretended you were a new girl and flirted with you by writing a note? Am I missing something?” She asked. “Flirting? I thought he was making fun of me.” I said with confusion clearly written on my face. “Oh Honey, That’s how boys flirt. Especially boys our age. They aren’t smooth at all, it's like a train wreck. You hate it, but you just can’t look away.” She giggled.
