The True Beginning Part III

1500 Words
Meanwhile, the males continued to battle the bear together, side by side. The wolf lunged swiftly at the bear's legs, biting its tough hide, as the man used his pitchfork to stab at the beast. Each working in stride with the other to try and win this battle of life or death. The wolf distracted the bear as the man stabbed the bear just behind its massive shoulder, but his pitchfork was stuck in the hide as the bear swung its body around in reaction to the pain. This movement pulled the man forward and close enough that the bear made deadly contact with the man’s back, snapping several bones and leaving deep cuts in his skin as the man screamed in agony and fell to the ground. The black wolf ran to the man’s defense, putting himself in between the beast and his family as the last line of defense. Or so he thought. Seeing her mate in his broken and bloodied state made the woman’s heart break inside and, in a blind rage, she ran at the bear with the knife she’d been using in the field raised high above her head. As she rushed at the bear, it turned towards her, leaving its neck completely unprotected. The wolf lunged for the bear’s jugular, latching its teeth down, ripping through its hide just as the bear made contact with the woman, tossing her aside as if she were weightless. The wolf viciously ripped through the bear's neck, causing it to fall dead at his feet just as the Moon Goddess arrived in the clearing. The wolf watched her with his hazel eyes, his vision blurred by blood-clumped fur. Almost instantly, his strength gave out and he fell to the ground unconscious. Terror struck the Goddess’s face as she took in the sight before her. The four beautiful creations she loves so much, all struck down by the massive bear and lying haphazardly around the clearing where she’d loved to watch them play, work together, and live in peace. Her eyes began to sting as tears filled her eyes and anger filled her heart and mind. The moon above began to grow brighter, filling the sky as if it were coming closer to Earth itself, drawn to the Goddess by her emotions. The glaring light of the Moon continued to increase as the Goddess’ anger rose inside her. The once darkened clearing was as bright now as daylight. The Goddess was still breathing deeply and taking in the loss around her. Rage and sadness racked through her body as she began to sob, nearly missing the faint whimper that came from the male wolf. The Goddess rushed over to the wolf falling to her knees by it, grateful to see that it was still alive, even if just barely. She looked over at the man, and he was breathing, but it was very shallow and uneven, neither would make it much longer nor were their mates moving. But then the Goddess had a realization. These creatures worked so well together, living in harmony when many creatures can’t. Together they would be stronger than they were alone. Perhaps, being strong enough to maintain harmony and to prosper for years to come. The Goddess looked down at the wolf and the man. She reached out, gently touching the still warm blood of each, she stood slowly as she took something from her purse, a stone of pale blue. Holding the stone in her blood-stained hand, she looked at the other upturned hand and focused as blue flames began to spark to life from her fingertips. In a passionate voice she began chanting. “As the Sun gives its flames to the Moon, so shall these beautiful creations give life to each other so that they both may shine.” She recited, swirling her hands around her as she spun twice following the direction the moon crossed in the sky. She stopped spinning with each hand hovering above the man and the wolf. “Let the light and the power of the Moon bring you together and may you work together to gain prosperity.” With a fierce movement she brought the stone down onto the flames, crashing her hands together. When she pulled her hands back, the once pale blue stone shimmered inside as if the flames were burning inside, creating waves of icy colors changing with each shift of the light. “By my power and the power of the Moon, you shall be the first of my beautiful creations to be joined in this manner. Two souls each joined together to share the same life in harmony as one, guiding each other, protecting each other and their mates. You shall be the first of many, and there will be a bond between you and your mates that you shall not and cannot deny. Each shall have one perfect mate to cherish. I give this stone to you as a gift so that worthy humans and wolves may join forever, and you shall live again for hundreds of years to come.” The Goddess began slowly waving her hands over the fallen bodies holding the stone over each one. The Black wolf whimpered at her as she stood over him. His breath ragged, as if feeling her pull of power over him. “Fear not, my dear, for in your new life you will have your own voice, able to communicate with your human in a way you never could. You will also be able to shift your body from one form to the other, choosing when to be a wolf and when to be a human as you both please. Your wolf form will be much larger to allow you the strength to protect both souls. But heed my warning, others will come for this stone, so protect it with your life, teach your descendants to guard it well. It will keep harmony and peace in your world and allow for future generations to be born. Be aware, some day the stone will be taken, and the peace will come to an end. No new wolves will be born unto any pack but the one who holds the stone until it is returned to your descendants. It will take the fire of the gods and the guardian of the stone to bring peace back to life from the ashes of the many. I will send you a guardian when the time comes. Until this time, be sure you pass the prophecy down, keeping the stone safe with your descendants, and my love for you in your heart. For I will appear to your kind again when I am needed.” she proclaimed. The wolf lifted its head slightly and lowered its nose in a bow to the Goddess, accepting her gift and its new life before the blackness came and overtook it. The wolf's eyes closed for the final time in this life. Darkness returned to the clearing as a circle of blue flames rose from the ground surrounding the four bodies. As the sun rose over the edge of the woods, bringing its light to all the edges of the clearing, a small ray sliced through the darkened cottage, falling on the face of the sleeping man. He stirred slowly at first, then jolted awake, remembering the previous night and the words of the Goddess. His mate quickly awoke startled as well, and they held each other close, feeling for the first time, their wolves howling in happiness and love. A smile spread across their faces as they knew they would begin a new life sharing their hearts, minds, and souls together with the wolves they love. And so began the history of the Werewolf, the prized creation of the Moon Goddess. ****** The werewolves have flourished under the guidance of the Moon Goddess and continue to pass down her prophecy and secure the stone. In the weeks and months following the incident, the original wolves were joined by others like them who came from all over the world to find them in their forest as requested of them by the Goddess herself when they had been deemed worthy and gained their own wolves. Eventually, the wolves started procreating and passing their wolf genes to the next generation, known as pups, as the pack continued to grow. As with many cultures, people disagreed over the ideals and authority of the original wolf, who was named the Alpha. So the pack began to separate into smaller clans, each clan deciding to go their own way and in doing so, becoming packs of their own. They began choosing an Alpha and declaring names and lands for themselves. The original wolves, who were getting up in their years, now decided to call their pack The Moonstone Guardians after the charge given to them by the Goddess. They continued to keep the moonstone safe and hidden so that all werewolves may flourish.
