Chapter 3:

Aubrey The bowl of seaweed soup sat untouched on the table before me, steam gently finding its way out of it. I just laid there, staring into thin air. I thought the food will help me cheer up a bit, something to warm my insides. Even though my stomach was empty, no food could fill it My wolf had gone quiet since that unfamiliar man left the room earlier, I had this strange longing feeling for him, as if I’ve known him all my life. The door creaked open and I didn’t even bother checking who came in, nothing concerned me anymore. A guard opened the door expressionless, then he gave a slight bow. “Luna,” he said, his voice low and sounding almost unapologetic, “Alpha Alexander requests your presence in the courtyard immediately.” My stomach twisted, Alexander again? What does he want from me since he already said I was practically useless to him. “Courtyard? Why does he want me in the courtyard immediately?” I looked at the guard curiously as if I was expecting immediate answers but he just gave a negative nod. My throat felt dry instantly but I tried composing myself, hiding the concern behind my eyes and I nodded stiffly. “I’ll be there,” I said hoarsely. The guard bowed again and left without a word. The next thing I heard was the door closing gently. I didn’t touch the soup, I didn’t change my clothes, I didn’t try fixing my hair and checking out the mirror trying to be the perfect Luna I had spent years pretending to be, I just simply rose and walked out of the room. Each step down the hall felt heavier than the last and I had a bad feeling about what was happening. I looked around to meet different eyes staring at me weirdly; some pitifully, some sneering while some was just expressionless. Something was wrong but I just couldn’t fathom what it was about. I ignored them and kept on walking till I reached the courtyard and I could swear that something was definitely wrong. Members of the pack stood scattered around the courtyard while murmuring among themselves and gave me quick stares which made me more confused; their eyes met mine, then darted away. Then I saw Alexander, standing tall at the center with Brianna clinging to his arms, making the view sickening. I felt pained. After everything I did for him, then she comes from nowhere and takes him away from me since she was the sole owner and I was just an ordinary replacement till she was back. Alexander didn’t smile, didn’t blink but just stood tall with a straight face that sent shivers down my spine. He walked towards me proudly, “Aubrey Roston.” My name breezed out of his mouth gently, a few years back, my heart would have spun in happiness as he called out my name, but instead, fear settled inside me. My heart stopped, spine straight as I tried to avoid eye contact even when my knees wanted to give it out that I was scared. “Yes?” I finally answered, my voice as low as ever, eyes staring at me as if they were expecting something. He didn’t even pause to catch a breath or study me, he just went ahead, “I, Alexander Miller of the Bloodhowl pack, hereby reject you, Aubrey Roston, as my Luna and wife.” It was like time stopped, the courtyard fell silent that even a fall of the pin drop could be heard. I searched his eyes but it held no expression. The wind, the murmurs. the birds, everything went still and my body became stiff and cold. “I reject you, Aubrey Roston,” he repeated, louder and colder than earlier, “You are no longer bound to me so you’re not my responsibility, and I don't ever want to set my eyes on you again.” I couldn’t breathe, my leg wobbled. A sharp pain pierced my chest and Ashley whimpered faintly inside me, then falling deathly quiet. “W-what are you saying? Are you rejecting me because of her?” I managed to whisper, my heart pounding madly against my chest as I stammered. “I never wanted this marriage, Aubrey. You forced me into getting married to you so you could be the Luna. I was only waiting for Brianna to return so she could claim what’s rightfully hers, and now that she’s here, you’re no longer needed.” Not needed. Those words pierced my heart so badly. My legs trembled and it took a while before I could get myself to say anything, “I stood by you, I gave you everything.” His lips pursed into a thin line, “Aubrey, you keep disagreeing with the fact that you filled a gap for Brianna, and now that she’s here, you have to vacate that gap. I want you to know that you were never my choice, and you will never carry my heir.” His words sank in, my brain began processing every word. The crowd shifted uncomfortably, a few gasps and murmurs echoed across the courtyard but I didn’t care about their presence and no one dared to speak up against the Alpha. Brianna smirked and strode forward to stand beside him which made me have this tingling feeling in my heart. “I said what I said,” he cut in sharply, “You’re dismissed from your role as Luna which is effective immediately. The guards will escort you out of the pack house by nightfall, everything I bought for you should be returned.” And without waiting for my response, he walked out hand in hand with Brianna. The bond, the one that bound our wolves together and the connection we have snapped at that moment. My chest burned in agony, my breath came in shallow bursts, tears threatened to fall but I held it together since all eyes were on me. I kept a straight face but my heart had already shattered into pieces. It felt like lightning ripping my heart apart. I couldn’t keep in the pain any longer so I screamed out loud hoping to attract his attention. He stopped for a quick second, never turned back and continued walking. I fell to my knees, clutching my chest in pain, the world spinning around me and the crowd ran towards me, my wolf howled inside me, wild, wounded and betrayed, then almost immediately silenced completely. It was over, we were done. He rejected me since I wasn’t useful to him, I was replaced and lost the man I truly loved. I stayed on the ground but he didn’t come to help off the ground. Tears trickled down my cheeks as I pushed myself up with shaking arms. I had nowhere to go, but I had to leave anyway. All eyes were on me as I walked out of the room with my head lowered. ALEXANDER I felt relieved, finally, I let her go and I’m with the woman I truly loved. I looked at Brianna with tenderness, a gentle smirk crawled up my lips knowing that she’ll be with me forever. As we walked out of the courtyard, I heard her scream followed by a thud. Did she faint? I stopped in my tracks and was about to look back but Brianna tugged my arm with a gentle smile. My heart melted and we continued walking. “Forget about her, you have me now. She only filled the gap for me, and now it’s time to claim what’s rightfully mine, remember Alex?” I forced a smile and nodded slightly.
