If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. -John 15:19 Rose felt really confused. Though she was falling and no doubt the ground was rushing up to meet her, she no longer felt concerned about splattering. Her mind was now on the searing pain going up and down her back. It first began as a series of pulses which intensified to white hot pain slashing down her spine. It got so intense, Rose felt herself arch her back at an impossible angle as she released a long, agonizing scream. And then she heard the seams of her blouse tear and shred as something pushed itself outwards. She could actually feel it breaking through her skin. Rose began to beg for her to hit the ground already so she could just die and not feel the pain anymore. It was becoming too much; it literally felt as if her back was on fire. She panted and looked around when she felt herself lurch to a stop. She definitely did not feel the ground beneath her though just to make sure, she waved a hand behind her. She swiped at nothing but air. When she heard a gasp, Rose meant to incline her head to look who was below her but her eyes caught on something else instead; something vividly black and red. She was staring right at a wing that was delicately fluttering back and forth; some weird, clear-looking goo still clinging onto its surface. Rose turned to look at her other side and sure enough, there was a mirror image of the exact same wing, moving precisely at the same pace as its twin. The last thing Rose remembers is feeling her eyes roll upwards before she felt the sensation of falling again just as darkness descended upon her. * * * * * * * * * * When she slowly came to, the first thing she heard was a series of murderous growls, no doubt coming from Fen. Confused, Rose carefully sat up, wincing when her back muscles protested. Hissing in pain, Rose saw Fen’s ear twitch her way but he remained facing the other way. She leaned over and gasped when she finally realized that they were fully surrounded by the Ohtar, the majority of them aiming their weapons straight at her while their eyes stayed rounded on something behind her. Turning to see what they were looking at, Rose caught a glimpse of Elénaryl who menacingly held two wickedly curved swords in front of her as she faced off the Ohtar on her side. Seeing a tip of something black and red lying next to her, Rose tentively fingered it, making a face when she touched some of the elastic goo that was still coating it while most of it had dripped down to the ground. Wiping her finger on her leg, Rose sought a clean spot and stroked that small area instead. She was beginning to feel in awe, admiring its silky-smooth softness before it slammed into her the fact that she could actually feel the touch as if she was touching her own skin. Rose gasped before making a choking sound as she grasped onto the piece she had discovered and pulled it over to better look at it. “Argh!” Rose released a cry of pain as her eyes instantly watered. She had pulled too hard and this thing was clearly attached to her. “What is it?” she whispered hoarsely. Fen whined, tilting his head towards her so she could see his eyes. It’s alright Rose. I didn’t know this would happen so soon but it did. “So soon? Wh-What happened?” Rose breathed as she glanced down at what she still held in her hand. You have wings, Rose. Please don’t panic. I can promise you that everything will be alright. They will die before they touch you. Fen vowed just as he whipped his head back around as soon as they heard the sound of an arrow being pulled back. Rose hiccupped as she stroked a part of her wing that was still clutched into her hand. Letting it go, she watched as it floated back into place. Taking a few deep breaths, Rose ignored the intimidating elves to look behind her shoulders. And there they were. Her wings. And tiny they were not. These wings were rather massive as the tops came well above her head and extended a few feet beyond her sides before they curled downward in an elegant spiral. Then she noticed its coloring and the fact that it was black around the edges before lightening up a fraction until it was the coloring of blood red. But it did not stop with those two colors. After the red, it began to softly fade into different hues, accurately mimicking a beautiful sunset she had so often sat and admired when she’d been lucky enough to go to the beach. There were so many colors in a sunset that it was hard to pinpoint what they were exactly. Just like her wings, except she was able to make out some shade of gold that reminded her so much of Fen’s eyes. She wondered how it looked in the center. For just a moment, Rose felt breathless as she admired the somewhat hombre effect of her exotic-looking wings that looked light to the touch but she could definitely feel its magnificent weight on her spine and shoulders. Their shape was not like anything she’d seen before. It was a cross between a butterfly and a tropical bird. The loud clang of blades meeting each other had Rose snap out of her marveling and turn to see Elénaryl quickly disarm an elf, placing her blade precariously against their neck just as she was joined by Cavan. His arm locked his bow with a pair of arrows c****d and ready as they aimed towards his own people. Rose quickly curled herself inwards as much as possible, her huge wings no longer looking beautiful to her as they were the reason why the elves around them were completely hostile towards her. And their eyes . . . Rose let out a soft whimper as their accusatory and disgust-filled eyes penetrated right through her. She felt their hatred, but more than anything, she could clearly see the one thing on their minds as their hands remained armed with weapons pointed straight at her: they wanted to kill her for only one kind of creature in Elysia had wings like her: faeries. Alden’s words when they first met finally clicked. Rose wasn’t fully elf because she was also half fae.
