Hocus Pocus

“Doctor William, I am officer Wills and he is my partner officer Clooney. We are here from the office of disease control.” Jim said in his gruff voice showing his badge to the doctor. he was sitting on the chair. He got up from his chair seeing the officers.

“and what is this visit about officers?” asked doctor William. He was in charge

“The disease control department has a suspicion that there is a new virus that manifests on a living brain and liquifies it. Hence the death of the host. We have seen some cases of it around the country, it is a very dangerous virus, it contaminates anyone that comes in contact with them and could cause the death of hundreds or thousands.” Jim explained to the doctor who was standing in front of them confused.

“are you talking about the corpse of patience moon?” he asked trying to make sense of what we were saying.

“ahh... yes. Our department thinks that he was infected with that virus and leaving his corpse could be hazardous.” Reeve tried to explain to the doctor.

“here…. this way officers. If this is as dangerous as you are saying, you guys must suit up before going inside.” Said doctor William.

“augh… yeah we came prepared,” Jimmy said clearing his throat. Showing him a bag that he was holding in his hand.

“Well then, follow me”. said the doctor going to the morgue.

Jim, reeve, and doctor William, all suited up in their hazmat suit to check the body of Patience Moon. The cavernous walk in the refrigerated morgue was icy and silent. As we walked in, there were Nine naked corpses laying on the shelves next to various medical equipment and nothing else in the whole room.

“where is the body?” Jim asked looking at the nine bodies, they were all male. So, the one they are looking for must not be here. their bodies were wizened and pale. The room smelled like a disinfectant can have been spilled all over the place, maybe the whole floor has been moped from it. The light in the room was dimmed and white. The feeling of this place, it’s very hard to explain and comprehend, it’s like working in the worst place ever. Surrounded by dead and decaying from all the sides.

“We kept her corpse in a separate room after the autopsy since the results were inconclusive.” The doctor answered.

Walking through the morgue, we walked into the autopsy room. It was long and rectangular. There were seven tables in that room. Six were surrounded by groups of pathology residents performing autopsies. The residents were wearing long rubber gloves and industrial-strength aprons. The sound of their voices and their clanking instruments echoed in the room. Doctor William took us into a small room next to the autopsy room and there it was.

He slides out her body from the shelf, it was completely closed, and said,

“here it is, hope you can take it from here.”

“Yeah thanks, we will handle it from here,” Jim replied holding a scalpel in his hands.

He dissected the side area of the corpse with the scalpel. Jim is good at this stuff. He doesn’t feel nauseous doing it and he is quite confident in the work. But as soon as he poked the knife in her head, a pinkish-red colored gooey liquid burst out of that hole, just like chocolate from a lava cake.

“liquified brain huh…” reeve spoke out, his eyes a little opened and eyebrows furrowed.

“you finish up I’ll question the doctor.” Said reeve going back to where the doctor went. Going to him, reeve informed and said,

“good news doctor. This is not the virus we were suspecting it to be. So, guys can now chill it won’t infect you. There must be something else behind it. Where is his stuff?” said reeve to William.

“wait a second we have it in the locker here. I'll bring it.” Doc said while going out of the room but he returned back in a flash. He gave reeve a box, it had all the things that belonged to patience moon, which she had when her body was brought in the morgue.

“take a look”. He again said.

“yeah thank you,” reeve was thanking the doctor when Jim joined the conversations.

“what’s going on officer Clooney?” Jim asked reeve.

“yeah I was looking at the belonging of the corpse, maybe there is something that could help us find what happened that night actually.” “So did you find anything?”

“no, I was just going to look inside. Good thing you’re here. Let’s do it shall we?”

He put the cardboard box on the table there and opened it. There were two zip lock bags inside it. One had the clothes of the body and the second had all the accessories and anything else. Reeve opened the clothes bag while Jim was going through the other one with all the jewelry stuff.

“doctor, can we have a minute?” said reeve after a minute of looking through his clothes carefully.

“Jim look”, he said to Jim calling for his attention on him. He had a small bag on his palm. He was showing it to Jim.

“You know what this thing is?” asked Reve.

“hex bags?”

“yes, it means witches.”

“so, a witch is doing all this, it killed so many persons. Three persons in just three days. Maybe someone will die today too.”

“time to do some more digging. Let’s go.”
