ASAD
what? How? How did this happen? Everything went blank. Father was next to me holding my hands and crying like a helpless baby, telling me a tale of how the Makthums destroyed our family. I can’t believe all I’m hearing. Father had told me a different tale as a child. He would say; “Basit Makthum is a monster and that’s why we need to take him down, he threw us out of our home, he snatched away our dignity and that’s why we will snatch his” it became something he thought me to say every time I felt weak, to ignite a strength, but all that did was made me wonder; is there more to this story? I never had the courage to ask father if there was more. But now, now I know everything and all I want to do is rip that crest off Basit Makhthum’s head and rip his head off his body. I can’t contain myself the room is getting smaller, I can’t breathe.. I..i need to get out of here.. “Asad, can you hear me Asad? Asad?!” I heard father calling out to me. “Asad?” He called out again now I am angry at the man next to me why didn’t he open up to me about this. “Father! How could you hide the truth from me? How could you make me believe it was all my fault?! Eighteen years! For eighteen years you made me believe I killed my mother, you made me wish I died instead” father interrupted “no! No son, don’t say that, i.. I I didn’t mean to. I was hurt I was terribly hurt and.. And I was angry, very angry. I just wanted the hurt to stop…” he cried out, now he is holding my hands tighter and looking at me as though he expects to me hold him as tight. But.. “So you decided to make an innocent child feel like a monster? To soothe your hurt?!” I said pushing him away from me. I stood up and I made my way to the door. “Asad! Son! I am sorry. Please, listen to me” he exclaimed from the floor trying to get up. I paused for a while, looked over my shoulder towards him and said “ I need time to process all of this” I walked out of his study and made my way out of the manor.
Asad was running far out of the manor and was making his way to the woods, screaming at the top of his voice calling out to his wolf ; Ares! I need you Ares! Ares! He started to scream there was so much pain in his voice. He went down on his left knee first and then his right, his hands followed, his fingers were clawing the earth. He was shifting! He was still screaming out painfully. His eyes became wider, his bones cracking, now he is screaming even louder and his face was turning black and furry looking up to the sky. His bones are still cracking. The screaming won’t stop. His muscles are forming; his clothes began to tear off his now furry body. Ares has emerged.
Ares was running deeper into the woods and growling as he went. His fur as black as night but yet shined through the rays of sun that dropped on the forest grounds. He ran off the woods and made his way to al hilal growling and barking. As he approached Al hilal, he started to trot; I will kill Basit Makhthum! I will take away everything he ever worked for. Ares, made his way towards the walls of nukhba Academy, from the bars in between the walls, he saw her, Yara Makhthum, standing close to the main entrance smiling and talking to two girls; “they seem like her friends” Asad thought to himself “ I shall make you fall in love with me, I shall take away the dignity of your family. I shall ruin your lives. Like you did mine” Ares started to howl, he had heard the school bell. Ares isn’t very use to coming out. Ever since their first shift, Asad had been afraid to experience another shifting so Ares stayed inside to help Asad recover. The girls were making their way to the school’s main entrance. Ares started growling, trying to get through the bars as though he was ready for an attack. “not today ares, we will have our glory, just not today. Today we are going to watch from here, but soon.. soon we will make them bow.”
