Part 5

Lena stood in the narrow street for several moments after Adrian disappeared. The world felt strangely quiet again, as if the brief burst of chaos had never happened. But her wrist still ached where the man had grabbed her. And the image of Adrian throwing the attacker across the alley replayed again and again in her mind. That had not been normal. Not even close. Lena had seen strong people before. She had seen fights break out in crowded city streets. But what she had just witnessed moved beyond strength. It had been speed. Impossible speed. She rubbed her wrist slowly and looked down the empty street. “They were looking for you.” Adrian’s words echoed in her head. Looking for her? Why would anyone in this strange town be looking for her? She had just arrived. She knew no one. And yet somehow two men had followed her through the street as if they already knew who she was. A cold feeling crept down her spine. Lena forced herself to start walking again. The library was only a few steps away now. The familiar sight of the stone building and its tall windows brought a small sense of comfort. She climbed the steps and pushed open the door. The warm smell of books greeted her immediately. Margaret stood behind the front desk, organizing a stack of papers. She looked up when Lena entered. “Oh good, you’re back,” she said with a small smile. “I was wondering if you had gotten lost.” Lena hesitated. Part of her wanted to tell Margaret everything that had just happened. But something about the strange events already made her feel uncertain about how the town would react. “I’m fine,” she said instead. Margaret studied her for a moment. “Are you sure?” “Yes.” Margaret nodded slowly, though her eyes lingered briefly on the red mark on Lena’s wrist. “If you need anything, my office is just down the hall,” she said. “Thank you.” Lena moved toward the back of the library. Tall shelves stretched endlessly around her, filled with dusty volumes and old records. Sunlight filtered through the arched windows, illuminating floating particles of dust in the air. Normally Lena loved places like this. Libraries had always felt safe. But today, even surrounded by books, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed the moment she arrived in Ravenfall. Something she didn’t yet understand. Meanwhile, deep within the forest that surrounded the town, Adrian stood on the edge of a cliff overlooking Ravenfall. From here he could see the rooftops of the town clearly. And the library. The place where Lena now worked. “You’re getting careless.” The voice came from behind him. Adrian didn’t turn. “I handled it,” he said calmly. Lucien Valerius stepped out of the shadows of the trees. Unlike Adrian, Lucien’s presence carried a colder energy. His dark hair was tied loosely at the back of his neck, and his sharp features remained perfectly composed as he approached. “You attacked two humans in the middle of the town,” Lucien said. “They attacked her first.” Lucien’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Exactly my point.” Adrian finally turned. “You felt it too,” he said. Lucien didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked toward the library in the distance. “Yes,” he said quietly. “I felt it.” The strange pulse hidden within Lena’s blood. Even from this distance it lingered faintly in the air. Ancient. Powerful. Dangerous. Lucien crossed his arms. “She should not be here.” Adrian’s expression darkened. “She didn’t choose it.” “That doesn’t change the danger.” Adrian stepped closer. “She’s human.” “For now,” Lucien replied. Silence fell between them. The wind moved through the trees. “You know what her blood means,” Lucien continued. “If the others discover it—” “They won’t.” Lucien looked at him sharply. “You cannot protect her forever.” Adrian’s voice lowered. “I don’t need forever.” Lucien studied his brother carefully. Then he asked the question he had already begun to suspect the answer to. “You’re already attached to her.” Adrian didn’t respond. That silence was answer enough. Lucien sighed softly. “This will end badly,” he said. Adrian’s eyes flashed. “Stay away from her.” Lucien raised an eyebrow. “You think I’m the danger?” “No,” Adrian said quietly. “The world we live in is.” Lucien looked back toward Ravenfall. Toward the girl whose arrival had already begun to shift the balance of things. “You may not have a choice in the matter,” he said. Because deep within the forest, something else had already begun to move. Something ancient. Something drawn to the scent of Lena’s blood. Inside the library, Lena sat at the large wooden desk Margaret had assigned her. Stacks of old town records surrounded her. Most of them dated back more than a hundred years. She flipped through a thick ledger filled with handwritten entries about Ravenfall’s early history. Her job today was simply to begin sorting and cataloging them. But something unusual caught her attention. The Valerius name appeared again and again throughout the records. Land purchases. Historical donations. Even town leadership roles dating back generations. That was strange. Families came and went over time. But the Valerius name seemed to appear continuously… for centuries. Lena flipped to another page. And froze. There, in an old photograph attached to a newspaper article from decades ago… Was Adrian. Or someone who looked exactly like him. Standing beside the mayor of Ravenfall in a picture dated nearly seventy years ago. Lena stared at the image. That couldn’t be possible. People didn’t stay exactly the same for seventy years. Her heart began to beat faster. Slowly, she turned the page. Another article. Another photograph. Another man who looked exactly like Adrian. But this one was dated over a hundred years ago. A cold chill ran through her. “What is going on here?” she whispered to herself. At that exact moment, the lights in the library flickered. Just once. But long enough to make Lena look up. And for a brief second… She had the strange feeling that someone was standing behind her. Watching. Very slowly, Lena turned around. But the aisle behind her was empty. Just rows of silent bookshelves stretching into shadow. Yet she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed. That something in Ravenfall had noticed her. And now… It was awake.
