Part 3 Continues & Part 4

A man stepped inside. The atmosphere in the room changed instantly. It wasn’t dramatic—no one gasped or reacted loudly—but Lena noticed the subtle shift in the air. Conversations quieted slightly. Several people glanced toward the door. The man who had entered was tall. Tall enough that he seemed to dominate the room without trying. He wore a long black coat despite the mild weather, and his dark hair fell loosely across his forehead. His face was striking. Sharp cheekbones. Pale skin. Eyes so dark they almost looked black in the soft light of the café. For a moment Lena forgot to breathe. There was something about him. Something intense. Something dangerous. Clara straightened immediately. “Good morning, Adrian,” she said. Adrian. The man gave her a small nod. “Clara.” His voice was calm and deep. He moved toward the counter but then paused slightly. His gaze had shifted. Toward Lena. Their eyes met. For a brief second, the world seemed to go completely still. Lena felt an odd warmth spread through her chest. Not fear. Not exactly attraction either. Something stranger. Something almost electric. Adrian’s expression didn’t change, but she noticed the slight narrowing of his eyes as if he were studying her. Trying to understand something. Then the moment ended. He looked away and ordered his coffee. Clara leaned closer to Lena again. “You picked an interesting day to arrive,” she whispered. “Why?” Lena asked quietly. Clara glanced toward Adrian before lowering her voice even further. “That’s Adrian Valerius.” “Should I know who that is?” “Everyone in Ravenfall knows the Valerius family.” Lena looked back at Adrian. He was standing near the window now, holding his coffee cup but not drinking it. Watching the street. “Why?” she asked. Clara hesitated. “They’ve been here a long time,” she said finally. “How long?” Clara gave a small mysterious smile. “Longer than anyone can remember.” Before Lena could ask more, Adrian turned slightly. For a brief moment his eyes met hers again. But this time his expression held something different. Concern. And something else. Recognition. As if he knew her. Even though they had never met. Across the square, standing in the shadow of a narrow alleyway, another figure watched the café window. Lucien Valerius observed the scene quietly. His sharp eyes moved from Adrian… to the girl sitting inside. So this was her. The one Adrian had sensed last night. Lucien studied her carefully. At first glance she looked completely ordinary. Human. Fragile. But Lucien had lived far too long to trust first impressions. He could feel it too. The faint pulse of ancient power hidden within her blood. His expression darkened. “This is a problem,” he murmured quietly. Inside the café, Adrian still hadn’t taken his eyes off Lena. Lucien knew that look. He had seen it before. Centuries ago. And it had never ended well. Lucien stepped back into the shadows. Because if Adrian was already interested in the girl… Things in Ravenfall were about to become very dangerous. Part 4 Lena finished her coffee slowly, but her thoughts were no longer on the warm drink in her hands. They were on Adrian Valerius. Even after he had left the café a few minutes earlier, the strange tension he brought with him seemed to linger in the room. She couldn’t explain it. There had been something unusual about him—something that made people notice him the moment he entered. Yet no one seemed surprised by his presence. If anything, the locals behaved as though seeing him was perfectly normal. Still, the way he had looked at her… That had not felt normal. It had felt like recognition. As if he had known her somehow. Which made absolutely no sense. Lena pushed the thought away and stood up. “Thank you for the coffee,” she said to Clara at the counter. “Anytime,” Clara replied with a smile. “And if you need anything while you're settling in, just come by.” “I will.” Lena stepped outside into the cool air again. The town square had grown busier during the morning. A few delivery trucks moved slowly along the cobblestone streets, and several shopkeepers were arranging displays outside their doors. Ravenfall felt alive now. But something about it still felt… hidden. As if the town carried secrets just beneath its quiet surface. Lena began walking back toward the library. Her path led through a narrow street lined with tall stone buildings. The sunlight didn’t reach here as easily, and the shadows between the walls seemed deeper than they should have been. She glanced down at her phone for directions. Just another block. That’s when she heard the footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Behind her. At first she assumed it was just someone walking the same direction. But after a few seconds she noticed something strange. The footsteps matched her pace exactly. When she slowed slightly… They slowed too. A cold feeling crept into her stomach. Lena resisted the urge to turn around immediately. Don’t panic, she told herself. It's probably nothing. Still, the sound of those footsteps seemed louder now in the narrow street. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Finally she stopped walking and turned. Two men stood about ten feet behind her. They were strangers. Both were large, broad-shouldered, and dressed in dark clothing that looked worn and dirty. Their faces were rough, their expressions hard. One of them smiled slightly. But it wasn’t a friendly smile. “Well,” the taller one said slowly, “looks like we found her.” Lena felt her pulse quicken. “Sorry?” she said cautiously. The second man stepped closer. “You're the new girl in town,” he said. “Right?” Lena took a small step backward. “Yes… but I don’t see how that—” Before she could finish, the first man moved forward suddenly. His hand shot out, grabbing her wrist. Lena gasped. “Hey—let go!” She tried to pull away, but his grip tightened painfully. “Relax,” he said with a mocking grin. “We just want to talk.” His breath smelled like alcohol. Lena’s heart began racing now. “Let me go,” she said firmly. The second man laughed softly. “I don't think you understand,” he said. He reached toward her shoulder. That was when the wind changed. A sudden rush of cold air swept down the street. And in the next second… Someone else appeared. So fast Lena barely saw him move. One moment the street had been empty. The next— Adrian Valerius stood between her and the two men. The taller man holding Lena’s wrist blinked in surprise. “Who the hell—” He never finished the sentence. Adrian moved. The motion was so fast Lena couldn’t fully follow it. One second Adrian stood still. The next, the man holding her wrist was flying backward through the air. He slammed into the stone wall with a sickening crack and collapsed to the ground. The second man stared in shock. “What the—” Adrian turned toward him slowly. His expression had changed completely. Gone was the calm man from the café. Now his face was cold. Dangerous. Predatory. “You should leave,” Adrian said quietly. The second man looked at his unconscious friend on the ground. Then back at Adrian. Fear flashed across his face. Without another word, he grabbed his friend and dragged him away down the street. Within seconds they were gone. The alley fell silent again. Lena stood frozen. Her wrist still throbbed where the man had grabbed her. But that wasn’t what shocked her. What shocked her was Adrian. He hadn’t even looked winded. And there was no way—no normal way—that he could have moved that fast. Adrian turned toward her. For a moment, neither of them spoke. “Are you hurt?” he asked. His voice was calm again. Almost gentle. Lena shook her head slowly. “I… I think I'm okay.” Adrian glanced briefly at her wrist. His eyes darkened slightly when he saw the red mark. “You shouldn't walk alone through these streets,” he said quietly. Lena stared at him. “I wasn’t exactly planning on being attacked,” she replied. Adrian almost smiled at that. But the expression faded quickly. “Ravenfall is not as safe as it looks,” he said. There was something heavy in his voice now. A warning. Lena crossed her arms slightly. “Well, thank you for helping,” she said. “But… how did you get here so fast?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Instead he looked toward the end of the street where the men had disappeared. As if making sure they were really gone. Then he turned back to her. “You should go back to the library,” he said. “That’s not an answer.” Adrian studied her for a moment. There was something about the way she looked at him—direct, curious, unafraid—that caught him off guard. Most humans would have been terrified after witnessing what she just saw. But Lena looked more puzzled than frightened. Finally he spoke again. “You ask a lot of questions,” he said. “I work in a library,” Lena replied. “It comes with the job.” For a moment Adrian actually smiled. A real smile this time. And for a brief second, Lena felt the strange warmth in her chest again. But the moment passed quickly. Adrian’s expression grew serious once more. “You should stay away from places like this after dark,” he said. Lena frowned slightly. “Are you going to explain why?” Adrian hesitated. Then he shook his head. “No.” And with that, he turned and began walking away down the street. “Wait!” Lena called after him. He paused but didn’t turn around. “Yes?” “What were those men doing?” Adrian was silent for a moment. Then he said something that made a chill run down Lena’s spine. “They weren’t looking for money,” he said quietly. “They were looking for you.” And before Lena could ask another question… He disappeared around the corner. Leaving her standing alone in the quiet street of Ravenfall. With more questions than answers.
