CHAPTER 4:SILK AND SILVER

1286 Words
The tailor didn't speak. She just measured. For two hours, the older woman moved around me like a ghost, wrapping measuring tapes around my waist, hips, and bust while Jax stood guard outside my unlocked door. Racks of clothing had been wheeled into the room-silks, cashmeres, designer labels I couldn't have afforded if I saved for a decade. It was a beautiful, suffocating display of ownership. By the time the grandfather clock in the hall struck eight, my old, frayed black dress was gone, burned in the fireplace just as Kaelen had ordered. In its place, I wore a floor-length crimson slip dress. I stared at my reflection in the ornate standing mirror, barely recognizing the girl staring back. The silk clung to every curve of my body like liquid fire, the thin straps leaving my shoulders and collarbone completely bare. A daring slit ran up the left leg, exposing my thigh with every step. It wasn't just a dress. It was a brand. The color of blood. The color of a warning. A heavy knock sounded at the door before it swung open. Jax stood in the threshold, his obsidian eyes scanning the room before landing on me. His expression remained a stone wall. "The boss is waiting," he grunted. I took a deep breath, trying to steady the frantic beating of my heart, and followed him out of the gilded cage. The estate at night was a different kind of terrifying. The shadows seemed longer, the silence heavier. Jax led me down the grand staircase and through a labyrinth of dark marble hallways until we reached a massive dining room. A long, mahogany table stretched across the center of the room, lit only by the flickering glow of a roaring fireplace and heavy silver candelabras. Kaelen sat at the head of the table. When I walked in, he stopped swirling the dark red wine in his glass. His pale silver eyes locked onto me, and for a second, the absolute, primal hunger in his gaze made my footsteps falter. The air in the room instantly thickened, crackling with an electric tension that made my skin flush. He was wearing a perfectly tailored black suit, but he had discarded the tie. The dangerous, relaxed posture he held was an illusion. He was a predator watching his prey walk right into his den. There was a plate set at the opposite end of the massive table. I moved toward it, desperate for the distance. "No," Kaelen's voice cut through the silence, deep and commanding. I froze. He didn't raise his voice, but the authority in it was absolute. He gestured to the empty chair directly to his right, so close their armrests were practically touching. "Here." "I'd rather sit at the end," I said, my voice trembling slightly. Kaelen set his wine glass down. The soft *clink* sounded like a gavel dropping. "Siena. Do not make me come over there and carry you to this chair. Because if I put my hands on you right now, I might not let you eat at all." A hot shiver of fear-and something far more treacherous-ripped through me. I swallowed hard, abandoning the far end of the table and walking slowly toward him. The crimson slit of my dress parted, exposing my bare leg. I felt Kaelen's gaze track the movement, his eyes darkening to the color of a storm cloud. I sank into the chair beside him. He was so close I could feel the heat radiating off his body, smell the intoxicating mix of bergamot and expensive whiskey on his breath. "Beautiful," he murmured, his gaze dropping to my bare collarbone. "Red is exactly your color." "It feels like a collar," I whispered bitterly, refusing to look at him. "A collar keeps a pet from running," Kaelen replied smoothly, leaning toward me. "This dress is a declaration. It tells every man in my syndicate that you are mine, and if they look at you too long, I will gouge their eyes out." My breath hitched at the casual violence in his tone. I finally turned to look at him, but that was a mistake. He lifted his hand, his knuckles brushing against my cheek before his fingers tangled in the hair at the nape of my neck. His grip wasn't painful, but it was completely unyielding. He pulled me slightly closer, forcing me to tilt my head up. "We are going to establish the rules of your stay, little bird," he rasped, his eyes dropping to my lips. "Rule number one. You do not hide from me. There will be no locked doors between us. If I want to see you, I will." "And my privacy?" I gasped, my chest rising and falling heavily against the bodice of my dress. "You lost the right to privacy the moment your father signed that paper," Kaelen countered softly. His thumb traced the sensitive line of my jaw, sending a shockwave of heat straight down to my stomach. "Rule number two. You will eat what I give you, and you will wear what I buy you. You will let me take care of you." "That isn't care. It's control." "It is both." Kaelen's grip on my hair tightened just enough to make me gasp. "And rule number three. The most important one. You will stop lying to yourself." "I don't-" Before I could finish, Kaelen's free hand slid under the table. His large, rough palm settled directly onto my bare thigh, right where the slit of my dress parted. I jolted, a soft, involuntary moan escaping my lips. His skin was burning hot against mine. His fingers squeezed my thigh, his thumb brushing a slow, agonizing circle against the sensitive flesh. My mind screamed at me to push him away, to slap him, to run. But my body betrayed me. A heavy, liquid warmth pooled in my center, and my breath fractured into shallow pants. "You hate me," Kaelen whispered, leaning in until his lips were just a millimeter from mine. I could taste his wine on the air. "You are terrified of me. But your pulse is racing, Siena. Your skin is flushed. You're trembling... and not from fear." "Stop," I breathed, though I made no move to pull away. "Lie to me," he challenged, his voice a dark, gravelly vibration against my mouth. His hand slid an inch higher on my thigh, sending a spike of blinding heat through my veins. "Tell me you don't feel this. Tell me you don't want me to kiss you right now." I closed my eyes, a tear slipping down my cheek, trapped between the horror of my situation and the undeniable, consuming fire he was igniting inside me. I was a captive. He was a monster. But heaven help me, I wanted him to close the distance. When I didn't answer, a low growl rumbled in Kaelen's chest. "Open your eyes, Siena." I did. "You are going to fight me," Kaelen promised, his silver eyes blazing with a feral, possessive obsession. "You are going to claw and scream and deny this. But in the end, I will strip away every defense you have. Because you are mine. Every breath. Every heartbeat. Every drop of this beautiful heat." He didn't kiss me. The denial was a punishment in itself. He slowly pulled his hand away from my thigh, releasing my hair, and leaned back in his chair. The sudden absence of his touch left me shivering and hollow. Kaelen picked up his wine glass, taking a slow sip, his eyes never leaving my flushed, devastated face. "Eat your dinner, little bird," he commanded softly. "We have a long night ahead of us."
