CHAPTER 7:BLOOD IN THE CONSERVATORY

1439 Words
I found the conservatory entirely by accident. After the suffocating intensity of the study the night before, I had spent the morning wandering the maze of the east wing, trailed silently by one of Kaelen's guards. When I pushed open a set of frosted glass doors, the heavy, humid scent of damp earth, jasmine, and blooming orchids hit me like a physical wave. It was a sprawling glass greenhouse attached to the manor, filled with exotic flora and a small, trickling stone fountain in the center. For a few minutes, surrounded by the lush green vines and the warmth of the sun beating through the glass, I could almost pretend I wasn't a prisoner. I dismissed the guard with a nod, wanting just a moment of peace. I stepped deeper into the foliage, letting my fingers brush against the velvet petals of a dark purple orchid. "I didn't know the boss started importing such delicate little toys." The voice was raspy, grating, and entirely unfamiliar. I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat. A man stood blocking the narrow stone path between the ferns. He wasn't one of the guards. He wore a sharp grey suit, but his tie was loose, and his eyes were bloodshot. He had a cruel, jagged scar cutting through his left eyebrow, and the way he looked at me made my skin crawl. "Excuse me," I said, keeping my voice as steady as possible. "I was just leaving." I tried to step past him, but he shifted, blocking my path. He looked down at the soft cream sweater and silk pants I was wearing, a sleazy, knowing smirk spreading across his face. "Not so fast, sweetheart," the man purred, stepping closer. The smell of stale cigarette smoke and cheap liquor rolled off him. "I'm Silas. Run the Southside operations. I just came to drop off the ledgers, but if I'd known Kaelen was hiding something this pretty in the greenhouse, I would've visited sooner." "Let me pass," I demanded, backing up until the small of my back hit the cold stone of the fountain. "Feisty," Silas laughed softly. He reached out, his rough, dirty fingers catching a lock of my hair. He rubbed the strands between his fingers before trailing his hand down to brush against my collarbone. "How much did he pay for you, huh? Maybe when he's bored, I'll take a turn-" "Remove your hand, Silas, or you will never use it again." The voice didn't echo. It sliced through the humid air of the conservatory like a guillotine. Silas froze. I looked past his shoulder. Kaelen was standing at the entrance of the greenhouse. He wore no jacket, just a black shirt and a holster strapped over his broad chest. His face was a mask of absolute, terrifying blankness. But his pale silver eyes were completely dead. There was no anger in them. Only execution. "Boss," Silas chuckled nervously, immediately dropping his hand from my skin and taking a step back. "I was just introducing myself to the new girl. Didn't mean any disrespect." Kaelen didn't walk; he glided. The silence of his approach was more terrifying than a scream. "You touched her," Kaelen stated. His voice was a soft, emotionless whisper that made the hairs on my arms stand up. "I just brushed her hair, Kaelen, come on-" Kaelen moved faster than my eyes could track. He didn't draw the gun at his side. He didn't need it. Kaelen's hand shot out, seizing Silas by the wrist-the exact wrist of the hand that had just touched my collarbone. With a violent, sharp twist of his hips, Kaelen wrenched the man's arm downward. A sickening *CRACK* echoed through the glass room like a gunshot. Silas let out an agonizing, blood-curdling scream, his knees buckling instantly as his wrist snapped at a horrific angle. But Kaelen didn't let him fall. He kept his iron grip on the broken limb, forcing Silas to hang suspended in excruciating pain. I clamped a hand over my mouth, a horrified gasp tearing from my throat. With his free hand, Kaelen reached into his pocket and produced a sleek, black-handled switchblade. The silver blade shot out with a deadly *snick*. Kaelen grabbed Silas by the throat, slamming him backward into a metal plant stand. Terra-cotta pots shattered across the floor. Kaelen pressed the razor-sharp edge of the blade directly against Silas's left eye. "Look at her," Kaelen commanded, his voice vibrating with a demonic, rumbling fury. Silas sobbed, a pathetic, wet sound, his good eye rolling wildly toward me. "Please... Boss, please..." "She is not a toy," Kaelen whispered, leaning in so close Silas's blood splattered against Kaelen's crisp collar. "She is not a girl. She is *mine*. And if you ever look at her, speak to her, or breathe the air she breathes again, I will peel the skin from your bones while you are still awake to feel it. Do you understand me?" "Yes! Yes, God, I swear!" Silas choked out, tears mixing with the sweat on his face. Kaelen released him, letting the man collapse into the dirt and broken pottery in a pathetic, whimpering heap. "Jax!" Kaelen barked. Jax materialized in the doorway almost instantly. He didn't even blink at the sight of the bleeding capo on the floor. "Get this garbage off my estate," Kaelen ordered, wiping a single drop of Silas's blood off the blade onto Silas's expensive suit jacket. "If I see him on these grounds again, bury him." Jax dragged the sobbing man out of the conservatory by his collar. The glass doors swung shut. The silence that followed was deafening. I was trembling so violently I had to grip the edge of the stone fountain to stay upright. The sheer, unadulterated brutality I had just witnessed played on a loop in my mind. He was a monster. He was the devil himself. Kaelen stood with his back to me, his broad shoulders heaving as he stared at the shattered pots on the floor. With a sharp click, he folded the blade away and slipped it back into his pocket. Slowly, he turned to face me. The dead, flat look in his eyes was gone, replaced by a dark, agonizing vulnerability that completely shattered my defenses. He looked at me like I was his oxygen and he had been suffocating. He crossed the space between us in two strides. "Did he hurt you?" Kaelen's voice was ragged, frantic. His large, blood-flecked hands hovered inches from my face, afraid to touch me, afraid to taint me with the violence he had just committed. "No," I choked out, a tear slipping down my cheek. Kaelen let out a shattered breath, his forehead dropping to rest against mine. "If I had been one minute later... Siena, if he had hurt you..." "Kaelen," I whispered. I didn't think. Driven by the adrenaline screaming through my veins, by the terror of the violence, and the undeniable, consuming realization that this lethal, terrifying man would tear the world apart to keep me safe, I closed the distance. I brought my hands up, burying my fingers in his dark hair, and pressed my lips to his. Kaelen let out a guttural groan that vibrated straight through my chest. He didn't hesitate. His arms wrapped around my waist, lifting me completely off the ground. My legs instinctively wrapped around his waist, and he backed me into the stone pillar of the fountain. The kiss was feral. It tasted like fear, possessiveness, and pure, concentrated heat. His tongue swept into my mouth, taking total control, ravaging my senses. His large hands gripped my thighs, his thumbs pressing into the soft skin just beneath the hem of my sweater, branding me with his heat. I moaned against his lips, my fingers gripping his shoulders tight. The cold stone pressed against my back, but Kaelen was a furnace against my front. He broke the kiss only to trail burning, open-mouthed kisses down my jaw and the column of my throat, right over the spot where Silas had touched me, erasing the memory of the other man entirely. "You're mine," Kaelen rasped fiercely against my pulse point, his teeth grazing my collarbone, sending a blinding shock of pleasure through my core. "Only mine. Tell me." "Yours," I gasped, entirely consumed by the beautiful, terrifying darkness of him. "I'm yours." He kissed me again, harder, deeper, stealing the very breath from my lungs until I forgot about the blood on the floor, the cage I was locked in, and the world outside. There was only him. There was only the viper.
