My surrender was a fragile, terrifying thing, balanced on the edge of a blade.
Pinned beneath the heavy, scorching weight of Kaelen's body, my mind was spinning. The revelation that he had shadowed my every step for an entire year-that my mother's silver locket now rested against my skin because of his calculated obsession-should have sent me running. But with his mouth devouring the soft skin of my neck and his large hands branding my waist, running was a physical impossibility.
I arched into him, a soft, involuntary sound escaping my throat as his teeth grazed my collarbone.
Kaelen groaned, the sound vibrating deep in his chest. He shifted his weight, his knee sliding between my thighs, pressing me deeper into the mattress. "Tell me you want this, Siena," he commanded, his voice a dark, gravelly vibration against my jaw. "Stop fighting me. Stop fighting yourself."
My hands slid up his bare chest, my fingers tangling in the heavy silver chain he wore around his neck. "Kaelen-"
*BEEEEEP. BEEEEEP. BEEEEEP.*
The shrill, mechanical scream of the estate's perimeter alarm shattered the heavy silence of the room.
Instantly, the ambient lighting cut out, plunging the suite into darkness before blood-red emergency strobes began to flash in synchronized, dizzying bursts from the ceiling.
The shift in Kaelen was violently instantaneous.
One second, he was a man completely consumed by lust, his body melting into mine. The next, he was a stone-cold killer.
He moved so fast it was a blur, rolling off me and lunging toward the mahogany nightstand. With a metallic *clack*, he racked the slide of a sleek black Glock 19. He grabbed a spare magazine, shoving it into the waistband of his sweatpants, and tossed a heavy black tactical jacket over his bare shoulders.
"Get up," Kaelen barked, his voice devoid of all warmth.
I scrambled off the bed, my heart hammering against my ribs so hard it physically hurt. "What's happening?"
Before he could answer, the heavy, muffled thud of an explosion shook the floorboards beneath my feet. Dust drifted down from the ceiling. A second later, the sharp, rapid-fire crackle of automatic gunfire echoed from the lower levels of the east wing.
My breath hitched. "Are we under attack?"
"Silas," Kaelen snarled, his silver eyes flashing in the red strobe lights like a demon. "The pathetic rat rallied his Southside loyalists. He thinks he can hit me in my own house."
Kaelen grabbed my arm, his grip bruising in its intensity, and hauled me toward the door leading to the hallway. He kicked it open, his gun raised, his body acting as a human shield in front of mine.
The corridor was a nightmare of flashing red lights and the smell of burning cordite.
"Keep your head down and stay exactly behind me," Kaelen ordered, his voice dangerously calm amidst the chaos. "If I stop, you stop. If I tell you to run, you do not look back. Understood?"
"Yes," I choked out, gripping the back of his tactical jacket so tightly my knuckles turned white.
We moved swiftly down the hall. Two of Kaelen's guards ran past us in the opposite direction, heavily armed, nodding sharply to Kaelen before taking defensive positions at the top of the grand staircase.
"They breached the conservatory, Boss!" one of them shouted over the deafening noise. "There's at least twenty of them!"
"Hold the second floor. Nobody gets past the landing," Kaelen commanded.
He didn't lead me toward the stairs. Instead, he pulled me deeper into the west wing, toward the library where he had made me play the violin.
As we rounded the corner, the frosted glass windows of the hallway shattered inward.
A hail of bullets chewed through the plaster just inches from my head. I screamed, covering my face as glass rained down on us. Kaelen didn't even flinch. He shoved me violently into a recessed doorway, throwing his massive body completely over mine to shield me from the shrapnel.
Three men dressed in dark tactical gear kicked through the remaining glass of the balcony doors, their weapons raised.
Kaelen twisted, his arm extending with lethal, terrifying precision. He didn't hesitate. He didn't aim. He just fired.
*Crack. Crack. Crack.*
Three shots. Three bodies hit the floor, dropping like dead weight before they could even pull their triggers.
I was trembling violently, my hands clamped over my ears. The metallic smell of blood mixed with the sulfur in the air, churning my stomach. Kaelen turned back to me, gripping my face in both of his hands. His thumbs wiped away a tiny streak of blood on my cheek-a scratch from the flying glass.
His eyes were completely feral.
"You're okay," he growled, more to himself than to me. "I've got you. Move."
He dragged me into the library. The massive room was dark, the fire having died out hours ago. Kaelen strode directly to the heavy mahogany desk, shoved the leather chair aside, and dropped to one knee. He pressed his bloody thumb against a hidden biometric scanner beneath the desk.
With a deep, hydraulic hiss, a large section of the floorboards slid open, revealing a steel staircase descending into pure darkness.
"Down," Kaelen ordered, pushing me toward the stairs.
I stumbled down the metal steps, Kaelen right behind me. At the bottom was a small, reinforced steel room. It was stark white, stocked with water, medical supplies, and a bank of security monitors currently displaying the c*****e unfolding in the manor above.
Kaelen stepped into the vault, but he didn't close the door.
He reached into his waistband, pulled out a smaller, silver compact pistol, and pressed it into my shaking hands. The metal was heavy and cold.
"What... what are you doing?" I asked, my voice cracking in panic.
"There are too many of them in the west wing. If they breach the library, they'll find the trapdoor," Kaelen said, his chest heaving as he looked down at me. "I have to bottleneck them in the hall. I can't do that from in here."
"No!" I dropped the gun on a metal crate and grabbed the lapels of his jacket, tears finally spilling over my lashes. The thought of him walking back up those stairs, into that hail of bullets, made my chest physically cave in. "You can't leave me! They'll kill you!"
Kaelen's expression softened, just for a fraction of a second. He gripped the back of my neck, pulling me flush against his chest.
"They couldn't kill me if they brought an army, Siena," he whispered fiercely, his forehead resting against mine. "Do you hear me? God himself couldn't take me away from you right now. I didn't wait a year in the freezing rain just to die tonight."
"Kaelen, please-"
He crushed his mouth to mine. It wasn't a kiss of passion; it was a brand. A desperate, violent promise that he was coming back.
When he pulled away, his eyes were cold silver steel again. He picked up the gun I had dropped and shoved it back into my hands.
"The door locks from the inside," Kaelen commanded. "Press the red button on the wall. Do not open it for anyone but me. If you hear a voice that isn't mine, you aim this at the door, and you pull the trigger until the clip is empty. Do you understand me?"
I sobbed, nodding frantically.
Kaelen stepped backward out of the vault. The look in his eyes as he looked at me one last time was something I would never forget. It was absolute, unhinged devotion.
"Lock it," he ordered.
He turned and bolted up the steel stairs.
I slammed my hand against the red button on the wall. The massive, foot-thick steel door slid shut with a deafening, final *CLANG*, sealing me inside.
The silence in the panic room was absolute, contrasting horribly with the glowing security monitors in front of me. I stood there, trembling, clutching the gun with both hands as I watched the black-and-white screens.
I saw Kaelen emerge into the library. I watched as five of Silas's men stormed the room.
I watched the man who had bought me, caged me, and stalked me turn into an absolute monster to protect me. He moved like a shadow, lethal and unstoppable. But there were so many of them.
Suddenly, on the monitor, a man flanked Kaelen from the blind side. A muzzle flash illuminated the screen.
Kaelen's body jerked violently backward, blood spraying across the antique Persian rug, before he vanished from the camera's view.
"No!" I screamed, slamming my hands against the thick steel door. "Kaelen!"
I slid down the cold metal, clutching the gun to my chest, completely and utterly shattered by the realization that if the devil died tonight, he was taking my soul with him.
