CHAPTER FOUR: SHADOWS OF THE MATE

562 Words
The moon hung low and golden over the city, spilling its light across rooftops, alleys, and silent streets. Aylin lay flat against the floorboards of the abandoned bookstore, listening. Every heartbeat, every distant siren, every whisper of wind pressed against her like a threat. Zara sat across from her, knees drawn up, watching the shadows shift. “You’re… not kidding about your power,” she said quietly. “That glow from earlier… it’s not natural. You’re not natural.” Aylin rubbed her hands together, trying to chase away the tingling energy that still hummed beneath her skin. “I don’t even know how to control it yet,” she admitted. “Every time I feel fear… it reacts. Sometimes it protects me. Sometimes… I don’t know what it could do.” Before Zara could respond, a sound froze both of them. Footsteps. Not human. Not multiple. One. Heavy. Calculated. Aylin’s ears—though hidden beneath her hair—pricked. Her wolf instincts screamed. “He’s here,” she whispered. The figure emerged from the shadows. Human-shaped, tall, broad, but every movement held a predatory grace. Golden eyes locked on hers, glowing faintly in the dim moonlight. Kael. Aylin’s chest constricted. Every nerve in her body recognized him. Every instinct, every pulse, every beat of her heart screamed: mate. Kael stopped a few feet away, studying her carefully. He didn’t move like a human. He moved like a predator aware of both prey and prey’s worth. “You,” he said softly. “Finally…” Aylin’s throat tightened. “Who are you?” “You don’t know me yet,” he replied, voice deep, steady. “But I know you. I’ve felt you for months… since your power first whispered through the territories. I’ve searched for you. And now… here you are, in the human world, alone, hiding. Dangerous. Beautiful. Mine.” The word “mine” rolled across the room, heavy, binding, and undeniable. Aylin’s knees trembled. She wanted to run. She wanted to hide. And part of her wanted to throw herself into his arms, surrender to the pull she couldn’t fight. “I… I can’t,” she whispered. “I don’t even know who I am here.” Kael stepped closer. The air shifted around him. Shadows seemed to lean toward his feet, moonlight catching along the edges of his dark clothing. “You are the Moon’s chosen,” he said simply. “The Ebonmoon heir. The princess who can protect or destroy. And me? I’m the one the Moon bound to you. The one who will walk beside you, whether you want me or not.” Aylin flinched. The pull intensified. She could feel his heartbeat through the shadows, resonating with her own. Panic and desire collided in her chest. Zara’s eyes widened. “Mate bond,” she whispered, though not fully understanding. “That’s… huge. Dangerous.” Kael ignored her. He crouched slightly, tilting his head. “You don’t have to trust me yet. But if you want to survive… you will. The Bloodfen Howl knows you’re here. They can feel your power. And they’re coming. Faster than you think.” Aylin swallowed hard, memories of the rift, the fall, and the city flooding back. “I’m not ready,” she said, voice breaking. Kael smiled faintly. “No one ever is. But fate… it doesn’t care.”
