CHAPTER 9

1050 Words
Serena's POV I didn't know what I'd have done at that point. I was sure I had never heard that voice before, but the person happened to know my name. I put a hand over my eyes and squinted at the glaring lights. I could see about four chopper motorcycles with ape hanger bars, and there were people mounted on them. A normal person would have turned tail and fled. A normal person would have called for help as they fled for their life but I wasn't particularly normal, I admit that. I slowly began to approach the motorcycles and tried to get a better view of the men. “Who are you?!” I called. “How do you know who I am?” “That's as far as you can get, lady!” A deep voice growled from the men, and I came to an abrupt stop. If the motorcycles and the way they chose to stay in the shadow didn't spell out danger, the voice definitely did so, and I knew I was supposed to run, but surprisingly, I didn't. “Who are you?” I asked defiantly. “What do you want with me?!” There was a low chuckle and then silence before that voice replied again. “I want you to deliver something to your fiancé.” The anonymous person growled. Fiance? So this is what it was all about, Myles? Was he involved with criminals somehow? I couldn't tell but at that moment my heart began to pound drastically. Something dropped a my feet and I jumped back instinctively. It was a black briefcase tossed to me from the men in the shadows. “Deliver this to him.” The man said. “He'll understand what to do the moment he sees this.” I frowned. Was this some kind of sick late Halloween prank or what? “Why should I deliver this?” I asked. “Whatever it is. You seem to be pals with Myles. Why didn't you deliver it to him by yourself?!” “We'll be sending the right message if you help deliver this.” The voice replied. “You have no choice, Serena Lancaster. You will do as you're told.” Really? Who the hell did they think they were?! “I won't do that.” I folded my hands stubbornly across my chest. “I have no business with you and I'm out obliged to do anything for you!” CLICK… What was that? I knew that sound! Even though I had never actually used one before I had been to a firing range a couple of times and I knew exactly how it sounded like to c**k a rifle. My hand quickly went up to my face again, and I peered at the shadows of the men behind the lights on the choppers, and true to my suspicions, there was a rifle trained at me. My nerves immediately dissolved to jelly and I was at the vedge of pissing myself even. I was staring death right in the face, but for what reason? “I believe I didn't make myself clear enough, Miss Lancaster.” The deep voice rumbled calmly. “You see, the thing is, I'm not asking you to do as I say. I'm ordering you to do so, an order you can't turn down.” There was a pause as if he was waiting for me to make another witty remark, but no, I didn't. Not when I had a gun trained at my face. “I could give the order now, and it'll happen. A bullet clean between the eyes and you'd be another body on the news, but girl I won't stop there. I'm sure a certain Mrs at Preston Hospital is your mom, right?” My heart immediately froze. Mom! She was still at the hospital recovering, and somehow, these people had managed to know about her! Who were these people? “What did you do?” I asked fearfully, with my limbs already trembling in fright. “It's not what I've done, it's what I'll do if my orders are not obeyed.” The man growled. “Now, will you do as I ask?” I hastily snatched up the briefcase. It was heavier than I thought it'd be and was shut tightly. “There you go.” The man laughed. “I'm glad we could communicate like mature people. Now don't try opening that. Just deliver to your fiancé just like I want, and you'll be fine. Oh, and remember, you don't hide from me.” The bikes started, and all four of them turned and rode off. As they rode off with their backs turned to me, I suddenly felt that the man on the left was familiar but I couldn't place where I knew him without seeing his face. My heart was thumping quite frantically beneath my ribcage, and I forgot all about where I wanted to go. I only wanted to go home now to call at the hospital and check up on mom! I turned around with the briefcase still in hand and walked, or rather, I ran, going as fast as I could go. I burst into the apartment after fumbling for a while with the keys. Thank Goodness Becca had gone out already so I didn't have to deal with her questions. I looked over at the wall clock, and it was some minutes to 10 pm. There was still time. It wasn't too late for me to call the hospital to check if Mom was okay, so I started calling. After the fifth ring, I still couldn't get any reply. What exactly was the problem? I tried ringing the front desk once, but when it still wasn't answered, I lost it. I ran towards the door but stopped when I remembered the briefcase. I quickly came back and grabbed the briefcase, and headed for the door again. Moments later, I was already at the hospital. I hastily paid the cab driver before barging into the hospital with the heavy briefcase still in my hand. The nurses on night duty looked surprised to see me, but I ignored them and made a beeline for the room I knew was my mother's..
