Serena's POV
It was with a broken spirit that I left Myles's office that day. I was spent, tired, and totally drained of energy. I couldn't believe the things that had happened to me in the last forty-eight hours. I couldn't believe that these things had all happened because of Myles.
I stumbled out of the office and could feel everyone's eyes on me as I made my way to the entrance/exit of the building. I couldn't look up, I didn't want to see their faces, so I kept my head down as I walked.
I don't know what prompted me to do so, but I finally looked up abruptly, and there he was, standing several feet away with his eyes fixed keenly on me.
Damian!
My blood boiled with rage when our eyes met and my hands balled into tight fists. The brat! The fool! The coward!
I noticed I had slowed down and was about to stop, but then I continued on my way and was soon at the door.
The receptionist was talking, saying something, maybe telling me to have a great day or whatever, but I didn't really pay attention to what she was saying, though. I was about to push through the revolving doors when someone entered at that moment and slammed into me.
“Watch it!” They almost cried angrily as both of us almost collapsed.
“Serena?”
I looked up and into their face at the mention of my name, and my heart beat increased drastically.
“Naomi,” I growled.
My days just kept getting more stupid! She was standing right in front of me. Naomi! The viper that had turned around and stabbed me in the back! The snake that had posed as my best friend for years!
“What are you doing here?” I asked, but then realized it. “Oh... your sweetheart works here after all.”
“It's nice to see you, too.” She scoffed and adjusted her shirt. “And no, it's not what you think. My sweetheart works here, but no, I'm not here to see Damian. I'm here because I just got a job with the company.”
I wasn't sure I heard her correctly. Naomi? Got a job here at Myles' company? What the hell was going on?!
“I see you're surprised.” She smirked. “Well, don't be. Some of us were born for positions like this, while some of us...” She dramatically scanned my whole body from head to toes. “You look unkempt. Have you been eating enough food lately?”
I wasn't really in the mood to exchange words with Naomi, and at the same time, I wasn't really going to stand there and let her have a go at me.
Before she knew what was happening, I'd already landed a sharp slap across her face.
Naomi screamed and staggered around blindly for a moment, but the moment was all I needed. I aimed another slap and it connected with her nose and part of her eye too, with a resounding crack!
I would have done more, but the security men were suddenly all over me with my hands pinned behind my back with strong arms.
Naomi cried as blood trickled down her nose, and I struggled to be free.
“What have you done?!” Damian, who had rushed to Naomi's side, asked in horror. “What have you done?! I'll make sure you hang for this?! You'll soon hear from my lawyer!”
I was practically carried out of the office by the security men, who made no effort to set me down gently outside. They roughly discarded me as if I were waste, and I nearly fell, but I managed to regain control of my body.
“It's best you leave now.” One of them growled. “And stay away or else you'll be sleeping in a police cell!”
I turned and walked away from the building, still thinking about everything that had happened. Why did Myles employ Naomi when Damian was already working at his company? Why was he doing this?
I began to imagine that the whole contract stuff was also a lie right from the beginning! He might have done all of that to punish me, but why? What have I ever done to him?!
My mind went back to my mother's health and her huge hospital bill, but that was only part of the problem I had. The other part was the loans I had accumulated in millions.
God, I was finished!
“Hey, what's up?” Becca immediately got up from the sofa when I finally walked into the living room. “You look…” she trailed off as her eyes ran over my body.
“I look like shit.” I finished the sentence for her. “And that's because I feel like that! I am s**t!” I yelled.
She frowned.
“Hey. Talk to me, girl. What's the problem?” She asked. “What happened to you?”
I suddenly felt hot tears welling up in my eyes. How could I tell her that the same fiancé who had unceremoniously visited the other day with flowers had called everything off out of the blue?
How could I tell her that I had been running around since last night with a briefcase containing someone's remains? How could I tell her that I would soon be going to jail because I knew Naomi and Damian were going to file a case against me?
Becca moved closer with open arms, and I shamelessly fell into her embrace and decided not to hold back any longer. I opened up and let the waterworks flow freely while she patted my back quietly.
Becca tried questioning me, but after she saw that I wasn't ready to talk, she went ahead to prepare a hot bath for me. I guess I really smelled that bad.
I lay in the bathtub, staring blankly at the ceiling as an embodiment of someone who has just lost everything in her life for the second time. I felt I was cursed; I felt nothing good was destined to ever come my way.
I was just sitting that way when I heard steps towards the bathroom door, heavy steps unlike Becca's, and then a note was slipped under the door.
