Across Enemy Lines

Chapter 2

I started my day the same way I did everyday. I was in the shower washing my hair when May woke.

"Hey Chloe." She whispered. I thought about what my mother had said.

"Hey May. How are you feeling pretty girl?"

"I'm lonely Chloe." May's voice sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a barrel.

"You're lonely? What do you mean?"

"You're 28. Normal wolves find their mate by now…" she trailed off.

"May I'm sorry. I just haven't found him yet."

"You've avoided any situation that might help you find him…"

"What do you want me to do?" I felt guilty. I didn't think about how being away from the pack could effect my wolf.

"Chloe… I want to go home…" I froze. I didn't want to move back home. I hated being there.

"May, you know I can't do that."

"No. You can. You just won't." I felt May fade away. I felt incredibly lonely suddenly but shook it off. I got dressed and headed out to work.

I scanned my badge and enter the building, going straight to my office as usual. I was finishing the preparations on my charts when a new patient showed up on my schedule.

JARED BLACK: 30YR MALE. NEW PATIENT COMPLETE PHYSICAL PER DR.FINE. Ok. That's weird. Dr.Fine usually asked before adding someone to my schedule. I got up from my desk and walked to his office down the hall. I knocked gently. "Yes?" A gruff voice said. I opened the door to find Dr.Fine pouring over paper work that was littered all over his desk. Dr.Fine was a average height man auburn hair and a rather large neck.

"Well, good morning Chloe! What can I do you for?" Dr.Fine stated with a warm smile.

"There's a new patient on my schedule,Jared Black? Who is he?"

"Oh! I was going to tell you! That's my sister's son. I wanted to put him with the best." He said with a wink. I smiled. His nephew. It made sense now.

"Oh. Alright." I turned to leave.

"Chloe?"

"Yes, Dr.Fine?"

"Keep this between us, alright?"

"Of course." I walked back to my office to prepare the young man's chart. At 7:45, Ramona called me to see our first patient. As I walked down the hall way to the patients room, I began to feel May stir.

"Chloe?"

"What is it May? I can't really talk right now."

"I feel him…" she whispered.

"You feel who?"

"Our mate…" I stopped in the middle of the hallway.

"Dr.Wood are you ok?" Ramona asked, concern etched on her face.

"I'm fine. I just remembered something is all. Which room am I-" it hit me like a ton of bricks. Pine and something sweet… like chocolate or strawberries.

"Dr.Wood?" Ramona stood and walked toward me but stopped a couple of feet away. "Wow… hey Doc, your eyes are black."

"What?" I heard a deep growl coming from the exam rooms. My head snapped in the direction of the scent.

"Dr.Wood? Are you ok?" Ramona moved forward hesitantly. I shook my head and took a deep breath.

"Which room is first Ramona?" I gritted my teeth and tried to breath through my mouth. My eyes kept focusing on the deep growl coming from exam room 3.

"Room 1. Mrs.Sullivan is here for a med refill, she's fine. Are you sure you're ok Doc?"

"I'm fine." I walked past room 3 and the scent was almost over powering. I could taste it on my tongue. I tried to focus and went strait to room 1.

"Hello Mrs.Sullivan. How are you feeling today?"

"Well, you know same old, same old. I'm just here for my thyroid pills. You know Jerry has been driving me crazy lately and Sarah won't get out of my house…" she was talking but I could hardly hear her. My mind was focusing on the mystery in room 3.

"Dr.Wood are you alright? I don't think you've heard a word I said." She pouted.

"Jerry is driving you nuts and Sarah won't leave your house. You need pills. Maybe you should tell them how you feel instead of holding it in. Just sit down and have a conversation. I've sent your meds over to your pharmacy. How about I walk you out?"

"Thank you, doctor. I'll do that." She smiled brightly. When I opened the door the smell of pine and strawberries hit me in the face. I swallowed hard and walked Mrs.Sullivan to the front for check out.

"We will see you back in 6 months."

"Not three?" She questioned.

"I think we will be ok to start seeing you every six months but if you feel bad or have any issues just move your appointment up. Have a good day." I quickly walked off and found myself standing in front of the growling door.

"Room 2 is next. It's a physical." Ramona was suddenly by my side.

"Mate is in there Chloe…" May whispered excitedly.

"Who's in this room?"

"Mr.Jared Black. He's a new patient."

"Black. Ok let me go see Paul then." I saw the next patient but my mind was in room 3. It felt like hours until I was walking the patient to the front for check out. Then I quickly made my way back to room 3. I simply stood in front of it, not daring to enter. Ramona was leaving room 1 again and saw me staring blankly at the growling door.

"What are you doing?" She stared awkwardly at me.

"Nothing."

"Well, Doc, I can see that. Why aren't you going in?"

"What does he look like?"

"Why don't you come in and find out, mate." I jumped at a deep voice from within the room. Ramona obviously couldn't hear him.

"Oh, he's sexy. He's got dark brown hair and warm honey brown eyes. He's really tall. 6'10". I wouldn't mind taking him out for a- did you just growl at me?" I hadn't realized it but my jealousy had released a low growl from my chest. I heard a soft chuckle from behind the door.

"No. I was clearing my throat. Guess no time like the present. Run along Ramona." I knocked gently on the door before entering. His scent was over powering and I felt light headed as I stood staring into a pair of coffee brown eyes.

"MATE!MATE!MATE!" May was chanting in my head. I couldn't move. He stood and when he did he was towering over my five foot four inch frame. He walked towers me and scooted me into the room before closing the door.

"There you are." His voice rumbled out of his chest as his large hands brushed against my face. I found myself leaning into him, purring. He smiled broadly at me. "I've waited a long time to find you, princess." My mouth went dry and I couldn't say anything. I just stared into his eyes like a child seeing Disneyland for the first time.

"Say something, beautiful girl."

"Hi. I'm Dr.Wood." I was still leaning into his hands. He chuckled.

"Hello, Dr.Wood. I'm Alpha Jared Black. I'm from the Dark Moon pack." I suddenly froze in horror and backed away from him. No, no, no…
