chapter 2:A stranger with gray eyes

1249 Words
The morning air was cool against Isabella's face as she stepped out of the towering apartment building. She hugged herself, trying to steady the whirlwind of emotions inside her. Everything felt unreal. The expensive penthouse. The mysterious man with calm gray eyes. The missing memories. It all felt like a dream she desperately wanted to wake up from. She checked the time on her phone. 8:17 a.m. Her heart nearly stopped. "I'm late!" Her shift at Blue Orchid Café started at eight. Without another thought, she flagged down a taxi and climbed inside. "Blue Orchid Café, please." The driver nodded before pulling into the busy morning traffic. As the city sped past, Isabella rested her forehead against the cool window. She tried once more to remember the previous night. The charity gala... The music... Someone handing her a glass of champagne. A toast. A loud applause. She remembered feeling strangely dizzy after only a few sips. That was impossible. She could usually handle a glass or two of wine. Then... Another flash. A pair of strong hands catching her before she stumbled. A deep voice saying, "Easy... I've got you." Gray eyes. Kind eyes. Then darkness. She sighed. "What happened to us?" --- Meanwhile... High above the city, Adrian Kingsley stood in front of the glass wall of his penthouse office. His phone lay on the desk beside him while Ethan Brooks, his executive assistant, organized a stack of files. Neither man had spoken for nearly five minutes. Finally Ethan cleared his throat. "The board meeting begins in forty minutes." Adrian didn't move. "Reschedule it." Ethan blinked. "Sir?" "I said reschedule it." "You've never postponed a quarterly board meeting." "I have now." Ethan hesitated. It wasn't like Adrian to cancel important meetings. Not without a very good reason. "And the investors?" "They'll wait." Ethan knew better than to argue. He quietly made a note on his tablet. When he looked up again, Adrian was still staring out the window. "You're thinking about her." Adrian didn't answer immediately. "I don't even know her name." Ethan smiled faintly. "Most people spend months trying to get close to you." "This woman left before learning who I was." "Exactly." For some reason, that bothered Adrian more than he wanted to admit. --- "About the security footage?" Ethan's expression grew serious. "I contacted the hotel." "And?" "They insist there was a technical malfunction." Adrian finally turned. "You believe that?" "No." "The cameras covering the ballroom worked perfectly." "The cameras in the parking garage worked perfectly." "The only missing footage..." "...is exactly one hour." Adrian crossed his arms. "Someone erased it." Ethan nodded. "And whoever did it knew precisely which files to remove." Adrian's jaw tightened. "This wasn't random." "No." "It was planned." --- Blue Orchid Café buzzed with the sound of customers ordering breakfast. The rich aroma of roasted coffee beans filled the air as Isabella hurried behind the counter, tying on her apron. "You're late." She winced. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Collins." The café owner folded her arms. "You've never been late before." "I know." "I overslept." Mrs. Collins sighed. "I'll let it slide this time." "Thank you." As Isabella began preparing coffee orders, her best friend Tessa Morgan burst through the employee entrance. "There you are!" Isabella nearly dropped a mug. "Tessa!" Tessa lowered her voice dramatically. "So?" "So... what?" "Don't play innocent." "You disappeared from the gala." Isabella froze. "You noticed?" "Of course I noticed!" "I looked everywhere." "I even thought you'd been kidnapped." Isabella forced a laugh. "I just... wasn't feeling well." Tessa narrowed her eyes. "You look terrible." "Thanks." "I mean exhausted." "I didn't sleep much." "Obviously." Tessa leaned closer. "What happened?" Isabella hesitated. Should she tell her? No. Who would believe it? "I don't really remember." Tessa frowned. "What do you mean?" "I remember drinking champagne." "And?" "Then... nothing." "You blacked out?" "I think so." Tessa's playful smile vanished. "That's not like you." "I know." Before Isabella could explain further, the café television switched to a live business news broadcast. Every employee looked up. A handsome man appeared on the screen. He stood confidently outside a skyscraper, surrounded by reporters. The caption below read: ADRIAN KINGSLEY CEO OF KINGSLEY GROUP Isabella's breath caught. The man on television... The stranger from the penthouse. Her coffee mug slipped from her fingers. Crash! The mug shattered across the floor. Mrs. Collins looked over. "Isabella!" But Isabella couldn't hear her. Her eyes remained fixed on the television. The reporter smiled. "Mr. Kingsley, rumors suggest Kingsley Group is preparing for its biggest expansion yet." Adrian answered calmly. "We'll make an official announcement next month." Another reporter shouted, "Is it true you're engaged to Victoria Sinclair?" Adrian's expression remained unreadable. "I don't discuss my private life." Isabella stared in disbelief. "Adrian Kingsley..." A billionaire. One of the most powerful men in the country. And she had spent the night in his bed. --- Across town... Inside Sinclair Holdings... Victoria Sinclair watched the same interview from her office. She smiled as Adrian's image filled the screen. "Still refusing to answer questions about us." Richard Sinclair walked into the room carrying a folder. "He'll come around." Victoria wasn't convinced. "He always keeps me at arm's length." Richard placed the folder on her desk. "That won't matter." "What do you mean?" He opened it. Inside were several photographs. Victoria's smile disappeared. The first photo showed Adrian helping a young woman into his car after the charity gala. The second showed the same woman entering Adrian's penthouse. The third showed her leaving alone the next morning. Victoria's fingers tightened around the photographs. "Who is she?" Richard smiled. "That's exactly what we're going to find out." --- That afternoon... The café became unusually quiet. Business slowed. Isabella was wiping tables when the front door opened. A tall man in a navy-blue suit stepped inside. He wasn't a regular customer. Everything about him screamed professionalism. He approached the counter. "Excuse me." Mrs. Collins smiled. "Welcome." "I'm looking for Miss Isabella Hart." Isabella looked up. "I'm Isabella." The man offered a polite smile. "My name is Ethan Brooks." He handed her a cream-colored envelope embossed with a silver crown. "I represent Kingsley Group." She blinked. "Kingsley Group?" "Yes." "You recently applied for our Graduate Marketing Program." Her eyes widened. "I... did." "We'd like to invite you for an interview tomorrow morning." Her heart skipped. She had applied weeks ago and never expected a response. "This isn't a mistake?" Ethan smiled. "Not at all." He noticed the confusion in her expression but gave nothing away. "We look forward to meeting you." With a slight nod, he turned and left. The café fell silent. Tessa rushed over immediately. "Kingsley Group?" Isabella slowly looked down at the envelope. The silver logo shimmered beneath the café lights. Inside was an official interview invitation. Tomorrow. 10:00 a.m. Chief Executive Office. She whispered to herself, "Chief Executive Office..." Her stomach tightened. That meant... She would have to face Adrian again. Not as strangers. Not as two people sharing an awkward morning. But as applicant... And CEO. Far above the city, Adrian stood in his office, holding a copy of Isabella's résumé. For the first time since taking over Kingsley Group, he found himself looking forward to an interview. Neither of them knew that someone else was looking forward to it even more. Hidden inside the company's security department, an unknown employee opened a confidential file labeled: Operation Nightfall He smiled coldly. "The pieces are moving exactly as planned."
