chapter 5: The necklace

1001 Words
The envelope trembled in Isabella's hand. She stood frozen beside the black SUV, staring at the three words written in elegant black ink. Remember the necklace. Adrian noticed the color drain from her face. "What is it?" She looked up slowly before handing him the envelope. "I... I didn't have this before." Adrian took it, examining both sides carefully. There was no sender's name. No fingerprints. No stamp. Just three simple words. His expression darkened. "Where did you find it?" "In my handbag." "You didn't put it there?" She shook her head immediately. "No." "I checked my bag before I left the café this morning." "There was nothing." Adrian exchanged a look with Ethan. "It was planted." Ethan frowned. "Inside Kingsley Group?" "That's the only place she left her bag unattended." Isabella tried to think. "When..." Her eyes widened. "The interview." "I left my bag beside the chair for a few minutes." "Anyone could have walked past." Adrian folded the note carefully. "This wasn't random." "They wanted you to read it." "But what necklace?" "I don't own any special necklace." She searched her memories, but nothing came. No necklace. No jewelry. Nothing that could explain the message. --- That evening... Isabella locked the door to her apartment and leaned against it. The silence inside usually comforted her. Tonight, it felt suffocating. She glanced toward the window. One of Adrian's security guards stood outside the building exactly as promised. She still wasn't comfortable with strangers protecting her. Yet after everything that had happened, she couldn't deny feeling a little safer. Her phone buzzed. Tessa Calling... She answered immediately. "Tess." "Are you okay?" "I've been trying to reach you all day!" "I'm fine." "Liar." "I saw the news." Isabella closed her eyes. Of course she had. "It isn't what people think." "Then tell me what happened." There was a long pause. Finally Isabella told her everything. The interview. Victoria. The leaked photographs. The missing surveillance footage. The mysterious envelope. When she finished, silence filled the call. Finally Tessa spoke. "I think someone is trying to scare you." "I know." "No." Tessa's voice became serious. "I think someone wants you to remember something." --- Across the city... Adrian sat alone in his office. The building was almost empty. Most employees had gone home hours ago. Only Ethan remained. He entered carrying a thick folder. "I've finished reviewing the guest list from the gala." "Find anything?" "Something strange." He placed several photographs on the desk. "Every person who served drinks that night..." Adrian looked through them. "...was hired through the same temporary staffing agency." "So?" "The agency doesn't exist." Adrian slowly looked up. "What?" "It was created three weeks before the gala." "And dissolved the morning after." Silence. Someone had built an entire fake company. Just to staff one event. "This was planned months in advance." Ethan nodded. "There's more." He slid another photograph across the desk. It showed a waitress carrying a tray of champagne. Her face was partially hidden. But one thing stood out. Around her neck hung an antique silver necklace shaped like a crescent moon. Adrian stared at it. "The necklace..." Ethan frowned. "What?" Adrian reached into his pocket and unfolded the anonymous note. Remember the necklace. His heartbeat quickened. "They're talking about her." --- The next morning... Isabella arrived at the café earlier than usual. She needed something normal. Something familiar. She smiled politely at customers while preparing coffees, trying to convince herself life could return to normal. It didn't last long. The café door opened. Everyone turned. Adrian Kingsley walked inside. Conversations stopped instantly. Even the espresso machine seemed quieter. Employees stared openly. Mrs. Collins nearly dropped a tray. The billionaire CEO calmly approached the counter. "Good morning." Isabella blinked. "What are you doing here?" "I came for coffee." She raised an eyebrow. "You own one of the most expensive coffee machines in the country." "It doesn't make yours." Despite herself... She smiled. Mrs. Collins looked between them in complete confusion. "So..." She whispered. "You two know each other?" Neither answered. Adrian ordered a black coffee before quietly saying, "Can we talk?" Isabella hesitated before nodding. Five minutes later they sat at a small table near the back of the café. Adrian placed the photograph Ethan had found on the table. "I need you to look carefully." She studied it. At first, nothing seemed unusual. Then... Her breathing slowed. The silver crescent necklace. Something about it felt... Familiar. "I've seen this before." Adrian leaned forward. "Where?" She closed her eyes. A sharp pain shot through her head. Fragments. Music. Someone shouting. A woman carrying a tray. The necklace catching the light. Then— A man's voice. "Don't let him drink it!" Isabella gasped. She saw herself knocking a champagne glass from Adrian's hand. Crystal shattering across the marble floor. People turning in surprise. The waitress with the crescent necklace disappearing into the crowd. Then darkness again. She opened her eyes, breathing heavily. "I remembered something." Adrian's expression sharpened. "What?" "I stopped you from drinking champagne." His gray eyes widened. "Are you certain?" "I don't know why..." "But I remember the glass falling." "And the waitress." "She was wearing that necklace." Before Adrian could respond, Ethan rushed into the café. His usually calm face was filled with urgency. "Sir." "What happened?" "We found the waitress." Adrian stood immediately. "Where is she?" Ethan swallowed. "Dead." The words hit Isabella like ice. "What?" "She was found early this morning in an abandoned apartment." "The police are calling it suicide." "But..." He looked directly at Adrian. "...I don't believe it was." A heavy silence settled over the table. Someone had erased the security footage. Someone had vanished. Now... The only person connected to the necklace was dead. Whoever was behind the conspiracy wasn't just hiding the truth. They were eliminating everyone who knew it. As Adrian looked at Isabella, one terrifying realization settled into his mind. She had remembered the necklace. Which meant... She was becoming the next person who knew too much.
