I slumped back against the door, began trembling, and slid to the floor. Tears began to glide down my cheeks. I placed my hands over my face and began to rock back and forth. What am I going to do? I can't marry that man. I am not an asset to be sold to the highest bidder. My parents are not going to listen to me. If I stay here, I know they will force me to comply with their plan. I slowly raised my head, peered up from the floor and looked around my room. My room is an example of not having a say or choice. Not one time did they ask me what room decor or color palette I would like in my personal space. My mother had an interior decorator do my room to her specifications. Everything is white and gray, not the vibrant colors of the ocean that I long to see adorn my space. The color of my room mimics my life, gray and void of color.
This is not the life I want. Enough is enough, it is time for me to make changes. Starting with leaving home as soon as possible. I am a young independent woman, I can do this! Then reality began to seep into my mind. How am I going to do this? I am only 18. Where will I stay, how will I get there, and where is there? Think Emily, think!
If I could choose any place to go, where would it be? Where would my parents not look for me? As I ruminate on my future, I know that wherever I end up, I need to have water and beautiful sunsets. Both of those things are my favorite things to paint. There is just something so calming and relaxing about the ocean. Now that I have narrowed down the fact that I want to be near water, what specific area of the country? Once I am there, do I rent a place, stay in a hotel, or just play it by ear? Who do I know that lives near the ocean? I pause when I realize I actually have a relative that lives right near the water and earlier tonight invited me to stay with her. Would Aunt Helen let me come home with her? Well, there is only one way to find out. I need to talk to Aunt Helen right away. My only choice is to ask my mother where she is staying or for her phone number. I began to leave the room, but quickly realized it was after midnight. At this point I will need to wait until tomorrow morning.
