Julian approached the right table with an apologetic smile on his face. His date was angrily looking at her wristwatch, she was nothing compared to Astrid at all. “Hi, are you Emily? I’m sorry I’m late, I mistakenly-”
“You mistakenly did what? You decided to finally show up, huh!” She snapped, standing up. “I was starting to think I would have been stood up!”
“I apologise, I mistook someone else for you and sat somewhere else,” Julian replied, calmly.
“You apologise? I wonder what must have made me agree to this date! How can I even stoop so low to date someone who has seen a lot of female’s buttocks more than a toilet seat?!”
Julian’s eyes narrowed and he clenched his fists.
The woman saw his action and sneered. “What do you want to do? You want to beat me up so I can end up as one of your patients so you can check my insides? Isn’t it?” Taking the glass of water on the table, she threw the contents at him. “Then take that, trash! You are not even worth my time!”
With a snort, she stormed off.
Julian wiped his face with a handkerchief while the other patrons stared at him, whispering amongst themselves. With a deep sigh, he walked out of the café.
…
“Look at that, she’s really beautiful,” An ugly looking man said with a deep smile, flaunting his pair of yellow teeth as he caressed Astrid’s hand.
She withdrew her hand in disgust. “Let go of me!”
His companion also smiled with lust in his eyes. “Hey, we just want to spend some time with you. Don’t you need company? He-he!”
“Yes, you surely need company. You aren’t here with a man so let us accompany you. The streets are really dangerous for beautiful ladies, nowadays,” The other man said with a wink.
Astrid clutched her purse tightly, fear was visibly written in her eyes. If she had known, she would have left the house with her bodyguards. Looking around, there weren’t any passersby; she was alone with these hoodlums.
“Beauty, no one would come to save you. You walked right into our abode and everyone here knows that they should keep off this path,” One of the thugs said, laughing.
“Let’s see what you have in your purse,” The other said with a sneer, dragging the purse from her.
“Let me go! Stop it!” Astrid cried, struggling with them.
“Leave her alone!” A deep, commanding voice sounded behind them.
The two men turned and narrowed their eyes at Julian. “Who are you? Don’t you know any better?”
“Perhaps, you want to act as a knight in shining armour for this beauty! Ha-ha!” The other said with a snort and stared at Julian with menace. “Boy, better run along or we will beat you up into a pulp.”
Julian narrowed his eyes at them, his face darkening as his fists balled up. “Next time, find someone your own size to pick on!”
“Oh really?!” They exchange glances and charge at Julian. “Then, let’s see what you’ve got, punk!”
Julian’s moves were swift. With a punch, he sent one to the floor and groaning in pain as he clutched his stomach.
The other one didn’t relent and threw a punch, directly aiming for Julian’s cheek, but he dodged, sending a blow to the man’s arm, making his flesh ripple and the sound of bones breaking filled the air.
“Argh!” A blood curdling scream erupted from within him.
The force of the blow sent the man a few steps away from Julian. Both of them stood up and took to their heels, one of them growling, “You will pay for this!”
Astrid stared at Julian with gratitude in her eyes as she approached him, “Thank you for saving me. I do not dare to think about what would have happened to me if you hadn’t intervened.”
Julian smiled lightly. “Don’t worry, anyone who found you in such a situation would have done the same as well.”
“Well, thankfully, you saved me. How about this, take my card,” Astrid said, giving him her business card. “My company’s name is on the card, just come over to my company and I will give you a very good position there as my token of appreciation. It would really gladden my heart if you accept it.”
“Don’t be offended by my next choice of words, being a nurse doesn’t really suit someone like you, I must say.”
Julian stared at the card in her hand before saying, “I’m afraid, I can’t accept this, Ms. Everett. I love my job and the sense of fulfilment it gives to me. Helping people is my passion.”
Astrid’s eyes brightened. “I’m really impressed. Then at least accept this token from me,” She said, handing over a bank card to him.
“Thank you but I wasn’t helping you to collect money in return. It’s obligatory that I help someone in need and you happened to be that someone. If there’s nothing else, I would love to take my leave now, and be careful in the future.”
Astrid nodded in response, watching Julian’s retreating body mix with the crowd. She was impressed by his sincerity; a man like him won’t pose a threat to her power within the family compared to an arranged marriage. Perhaps, her grandfather was right, she should have been a little bit patient with him.
Taking her phone, she sent a message to her assistant.
“Look into a man named Julian Styles for me.”
…
Julian exhaled deeply and tiredly as he stepped into his home. From sitting with a beautiful lady who wasn’t even his date, then getting embarrassed by his actual date, he needed rest. Today was definitely not his day.
His eyes widened on seeing a woman in his living room. The woman in front of him was the supposed date who had humiliated him in the café.
How did she get his address?
“What are you doing here?!”
